KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 – The Inland Revenue Board (<strong>IRB</strong>) has received <strong>217</strong> complaints
from the public regarding <strong>fake</strong> <strong>emails</strong> on tax refund since last July 21.
Its chief executive <strong>of</strong>ficer, Tan Sri Hasmah Abdullah, said from investigations conducted, the
<strong>emails</strong> were sent by phishing websites.
“The <strong>emails</strong> were sent by certain quarters taking advantage <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IRB</strong>’s refund to tax payers.
“Based on complaints received, the victims are not only the tax payers, but also those who
do not have files with <strong>IRB</strong>,” she told a media conference here today.
Also present at the media conference were Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC) acting senior monitoring and enforcement director Enang Faridah
Iskandar and head <strong>of</strong> the Cyber and Multimedia Investigation Division from the Commercial
Division <strong>of</strong> the Royal Malaysian Police, ACP Mohamad Kamarudin Md Din.
Hasmah said the <strong>emails</strong> contain logos <strong>of</strong> CIMB Bank and Public Bank and a link to the
logos.
The victims were asked to click on the logo where the link would direct them to a <strong>fake</strong> <strong>IRB</strong>
website where they were required to log in their online banking account details, she added.
She said the public should not be fooled by such tactics, adding that genuine <strong>emails</strong> from
<strong>IRB</strong> did not have any links.
Hasmah said that until end <strong>of</strong> last month, the <strong>IRB</strong> had processed 1,327,385 refund for
individual tax payers <strong>of</strong> which 957,173 cases were settled.
In a related development, Mohamad Kamarudin advised the public to exercise caution when
using online banking to avoid falling prey to phishing websites.
He said police did not rule out the possibility <strong>of</strong> many cyber criminal cases being masterminded
by syndicates based in the United States <strong>of</strong> America and Nigeria.
This year alone, the police had received 139 <strong>reports</strong> on phishing crimes, involving losses
totalling RM400,827, he added.
He said phishing could be done not only through <strong>emails</strong>, but also through social networking
sites, such as Facebook. – Bernama
