t is with great pride that I invite you to view the 

2010-2011 Sayre School Honor Roll of Donors. The 

photograph on this page is taken from the 1989-1990 

Honor Roll of Donors, the first of my tenure at Sayre. 

Carole Nahra (pictured), Board Chair at the time, along 

with the Board of Trustees, had the confidence to invest 

in a young man from Tampa, Florida, back in 1990, and 

for the last twenty-two years we have made great strides 

together. In 1990 Carole wrote, “I am proud to be a 

part of the Sayre family. While looking back fondly on 

our pages of memories, I am looking forward with great 

anticipation to the new pages in Sayre’s future . . . It is 

important for all of us to remember that we want Sayre 

School to be exceptional. This can be accomplished if we 

join forces and work together.” 

Those same words are true in 2012 as we prepare to 

“open the door” to the twenty-first Head of School, 

Stephen Manella. It is with the utmost confidence that I 

embrace this choice. 

What will Mr. Manella find when he arrives on our 

campus I believe he will discover much the same as I: a 

school steeped in tradition, but dedicated to promoting 

innovation in education . . . a constituency who play 

a vital role in the education of each student. He will 

find a Board of Trustees and cadre of volunteers who 

serve the school passionately. He will find a faculty who 

are here because they love what they do and delightful 

young people who are appreciated and respected for their 

individuality. He will find life-long friends as well as the 

joys and sadness intrinsic in these relationships. And 

he will discover a school worthy of educating his own 

children as I found with my boys. 

My roots run deep here, and I take great pride in the 

growth Sayre has experienced over the past two decades. 

Even more than a beautiful campus, new buildings, a 

laptop program, and an athletic complex, my greatest 

satisfaction comes from the smiles we exchange when we 

cross paths, how we laugh together wherever we are, and 

the respect and good humor we have shared, even in the 

throes of difficult conversations and decisions during 

tough economic times. 

Thank you for the opportunity of serving you. I remain 

humbled by your incredible generosity and love for Sayre 

School. I will miss “us” and the day-to-day of this place, 

but please know the door remains open . . .

preschool/lower school 

Our divisions set the foundation for a love of learning in 

a warm, safe, and developmentally appropriate atmosphere. 

Wherever possible, concepts are presented through 

multi-sensory, experiential lessons, activities, and projects. 

The Lower School is a bustling and vibrant community 

of learners where students, faculty, administrators, 

and parents work together to nurture young children and 

develop the important skills that serve as the foundation 

for further education.

The Middle School years are a time of 

exploration and enthusiasm. Middle School 

students experience unprecedented changes 

- physically, cognitively, and socially. For 

that reason, we provide a program specifically 

designed to tap on that energy and development. 

Among faculty and staff dedicated to 

the education of adolescents, Sayre students 

engage in academic challenge, find their voices, 

participate in their community, test parameters, 

and actively explore the world around 

them. It is an exciting place, and we always 

welcome visitors.

Upper school 

During their four years in the Upper School, students forge strong relationships with their 

peers and teachers. They develop strengths and affinities that open them up to new and exciting 

possibilities. As graduates, they leave confident in their skills and prepared to embrace the 

challenges and possibilities that await them.

The Sayre Fine Arts program nurtures and develops students from Preschool 

through grade twelve to be creators, consumers, and patrons of the arts. Performances 

and exhibits of theatre, music, and visual art, on Sayre’s campus 

and in our community, enrich and display the talents of our student artists.

One of the unique qualities of a Sayre education is the opportunity to learn 

in a wide variety of extracurricular settings. Active participation outside the 

classroom adds vitality to the learning experience. Our participants in chess, 

academic teams, and science fairs are competitive on the local and national 

level. Leadership and collaboration skills are developed through student council, 

fine arts productions, and clubs. Community projects teach the value of 

service to students in all divisions. Travel, study, and play together build our 

close-knit student body.
