The Summer Reading Test Review Sheet
We will review during two class sessions, and the test will be given during the
week of August 26.
Total points: 50 POINTS

PART I: CHARACTER IDENTIFICATION. For each character, I will ask
you to tell me two specific items about that character. Sentences will be
required. Be certain to know the characters listed below. This section will
be worth 20 points. Each identification will be worth 2 points, and points
will be deducted if you do not use complete sentences.

(Example: Brady Parks: Brady is the protagonist of The Red Kayak, and
the story is told from his point of view (1st person narration). Brady is an
8th grade student who graduates from 8th grade near the conclusion of the
novel.)

PART II: SHORT ANSWER. This section will be worth 14 points in total,
and your answers are to be written in full sentences. This section will ask
you questions directly related to the plot of the novel. For instance, be
certain to know the circumstance leading up to the little boy's drowning,
rescue and death, to understand why Brady struggled so much with telling
the truth about what happened (ie. what were his fears), to understand why
Brady was a pretty exceptional boy who knew so much about crabbing,
emergency care, and local waterways, to relate how the DiAngelos and the
Parks dealt with the death of a child differently, and how and why
punishments were parceled out differently to the three boys.
PART III: PARAGRAPH ANSWER (Remember to use correct sentence
structure, grammar and punctuation). Be certain to refer to specific
events in the novel. Remember, you will be writing on both topics.

A. In 8-10 sentences explain why the following quotation relates to Brady
and the decisions he made. Be very specific in your answer. Remember,
this quotation was said by Brady's father. (8 points)

"My mother - your grandma Ellen - she used to say to me, 'Tommy, if you
know right from wrong, then the answer is always right there, smack in front
of you. It's when you get to thinkin' on it that you get in trouble. Because
doin' what's right is not always the easiest thing.'"

B. In 8-10 sentences explain exactly how and why Ben died. (8 points)

[Note: These are the two topics you will be given on the actual test. I am
giving you these topics ahead of time to facilitate your review. You may not
come to class with a paragraph already written. In preparing for the test,
please think about these questions, organize your arguments in your head
and determine what evidence from the novel will help you. Then on the
day of the test, you will come into the test fully prepared to write.]
