CORNER Hart County 4-H Successful At Project Achievement Hart County 4-H’ers competed successfully at Junior/Senior Project Achievement, held at Rock Eagle near Eaton- CORNER ton, the weekend of March 9-11, 2012. There are 39 counties in the Northeast District and five-hundred sixty-five 4-H’ers, representing grades 7-12, were at Rock Eagle to compete for Project Achievement. Twenty-eight of these were from Hart County, returning home with seven Hart County 4-H’ers placing 1st, eleven Hart County 4-H’ers placing 2nd, and one Hart County 4-H’er placing 3rd. Hart County 4-H also had three members to campaign and run for NE District Junior and Senior Boards. Senior 4-H’ers Abby Harrison and Anna Holcombe campaigned for Senior Board. Finishing up a term on Senior District Board were Hart County 4-H’ers Lucas Holcombe and Wilson Pierce. Lucas is the son of Billy and Christy Holcombe of Canon, and Wilson’s parents are Mike and Linda Pierce of Hartwell. Also campaigning for the 2012-2013 District Junior Board was Hart County 4-H’er Zach Tellano. Zach is a home-schooled 7th grader, the son of Ruth and Randy Daniel of Hartwell. He was elected by his peers to serve as Vice-President of the Northeast District Junior Board. The Georgia 4-H Northeast District Board of Directors plans and organizes all district 4-H events and Board Members serve as Representatives of the Northeast District over the next year. David Rice, Hart County 8th grade 4-H’er, is completing his year as serving as President of the Northeast District Junior Board. David, the son of Charles and Caren Rice of Hartwell, presided over junior assemblies during the weekend. One Hart County Senior 4-H’er, Holly Verdell, placed First in her project, Food Fare, and is now eligible to compete for “Master” Status at 4-H State Congress to be held in July in Atlanta. Holly prepared a turkey bean chili recipe for the judges. Four other Hart County Senior 4-H’ers, Abby Harrison, Ashley Hollinshead, Anna Holcombe, and Lucas Holcombe are invited to compete at State Congress as Sweepstakes winners. Sweepstakes winners are those who place 2nd in a project which has a minimum of eight competitors. Project Achievement requires 4-H’ers to complete a Portfolio of the past year’s project work and leadership and community service. During the actual competition, each 4-H’er must present a prepared demonstration on his/her selected project before judges. The objectives of Project Achievement are for the student to acquire an understanding of the subject matter in a given project area; develop skills in researching, assembling and presenting information; stimulate interest in continuing project work through 4-H experiences; provide opportunities for members to develop and enhance qualities of integrity, sportsmanship, cooperation, poise, and selfconfidence; and help 4-H’ers develop skills in leadership and communication. There is a $100 cost per child to compete at Project Achievement. Hart County 4-H covers the total amount for each child and these monies are received through the fundraising projects of 4-H and from 4-H donors. Hart County 4-H’s graduating seniors are Emily Schleier and Wilson Pierce. Accompanying the 4-H’ers to Junior/ Senior Project Achievement were staff members Mrs. Amber Belanger, 4-H Program Assistant; Mrs. Brandi Shiflet, 4-H Agent; and Mr. Charles Rice, Hart County Extension Coordinator.
