Materials & Design: Permanent signs shall be made of wood, brick, metal, stone, or other rigid substantial opaque
materials. Vinyl cloth materials are prohibited such as banners being framed into a permanent sign. Letters on
permanent signs shall use typescripts.

Sign Regulations
1. Political signs, not exceeding two (2) square feet in size, shall be allowed in any
zoning district (anywhere in town).
2. Political signs, not exceeding twenty-four (24) square feet on a vacant lot, are
allowed in non-residential zoning districts with the property owner’s approval.
3. Political signs may be displayed from sixty (60) days prior to and until seven (7)
days following any election date for which an individual is a candidate or about
which a question appears on the ballot. With the election being held on
November 2nd this year, which would mean that political signs could not be
displayed until September 2nd or later.
4. No signs, political or otherwise, are allowed at any time in the street right-of-way
(ROW). The street ROW generally ends behind the utility poles. The Town is
still mowing the ROW; therefore, any signs placed in the ROW will be removed.
Signs placed in the street ROW may also present a traffic hazard.
5. No signs, political or otherwise, are permitted on any utility poles.
Signs in the Town’s jurisdiction found to be in violation of theses regulations will be
removed by the Town and/or a notice of violation and civil citations issued. Please
contact the Zoning Administrator at 992-0706 if you have any questions regarding the
placement of any signs.

The Sign Ordinance allows several
different types of signage
SIGNAGE
SIGNS PROHIBITED
The primary sign violation is not obtaining a
sign permit.
The sign permit application process allows a
business owner to understand the sign standards
that apply to his location.
There is a list of specific signs and attention
drawing techniques prohibited. They include:
• Flashing Lights
• Portable Signs
• Roof Signs
• Signs or Lights Emitting or Reflecting
a Glaring Light Capable of Impairing
Drivers Vision
• Use of Warning Words or Symbology
Signs using the words stop, danger, or any
other word, phrase, symbol, or character similar
to terms used in a public safety warning or
traffic signs.
Temporary, Nonpermanent Signs
Temporary, nonpermanent signs, including
over-head streamers.

This includes pennants, streamers, banners,
spinners, propellers, discs, any other moving
objects; strings of lights outlining sales areas,
architectural features, or property lines; beacons,
spots, searchlights, or reflectors visible
from adjacent property or right-of-ways.
(excludes electronic time, temperature, and
message signs).
The display of Christmas decorations, including
necessary lighting, shall be permitted
during the Christmas season.
Check with the Community Development Department
on projects that may be effected by
one of the Town of Kernersville’s Overlay
Districts.
Freestanding Sign A freestanding
sign is a sign that is detached from
the building. Each zoning district
has different height and letter area
standards.
Wall Sign A wall sign is attached
to the building. For most commercial
buildings,7%—
10% of the wall area can be
the sign letter areas. Each
zoning district has different
height and letter area standards.
Window Sign Signage can
be placed in the window if it is less than 25% of
the window area square
footage.
Sidewalk Sandwich
Boards A sandwich
board may be placed
along a sidewalk, but
must be within 5’ of the
building and be less
than 6 square feet. Sandwich
Boards are only allowed during
hours of business operation.
Projecting
Signage A
projection sign is
a sign that is attached
to the
building. They
are allowed in most commercial
districts and can be up to 24
square feet of sign area.
Awning Sign Signage can be
placed on an awning if it is less
than 25% of the awning area
square footage.
