The <strong>Sign</strong> Ordinance allows several<br />

different types <strong>of</strong> signage<br />

SIGNAGE<br />

SIGNS PROHIBITED<br />

The primary sign violation is not obtaining a<br />

sign permit.<br />

The sign permit application process allows a<br />

business owner to underst<strong>and</strong> the sign st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

that apply to his location.<br />

There is a list <strong>of</strong> specific signs <strong>and</strong> attention<br />

drawing techniques prohibited. They include:<br />

• Flashing Lights<br />

• Portable <strong>Sign</strong>s<br />

• Ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>Sign</strong>s<br />

• <strong>Sign</strong>s or Lights Emitting or Reflecting<br />

a Glaring Light Capable <strong>of</strong> Impairing<br />

Drivers Vision<br />

• Use <strong>of</strong> Warning Words or Symbology<br />

<strong>Sign</strong>s using the words stop, danger, or any<br />

other word, phrase, symbol, or character similar<br />

to terms used in a public safety warning or<br />

traffic signs.<br />

Temporary, Nonpermanent <strong>Sign</strong>s<br />

Temporary, nonpermanent signs, including<br />

over-head streamers.<br />

M o v i n g an d F l a s h i n g S igns<br />

This includes pennants, streamers, banners,<br />

spinners, propellers, discs, any other moving<br />

objects; strings <strong>of</strong> lights outlining sales areas,<br />

architectural features, or property lines; beacons,<br />

spots, searchlights, or reflectors visible<br />

from adjacent property or right-<strong>of</strong>-ways.<br />

(excludes electronic time, temperature, <strong>and</strong><br />

message signs).<br />

The display <strong>of</strong> Christmas decorations, including<br />

necessary lighting, shall be permitted<br />

during the Christmas season.<br />

Check with the Community Development Department<br />

on projects that may be effected by<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kernersville</strong>’s Overlay<br />

Districts.<br />

Freest<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>Sign</strong> A freest<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

sign is a sign that is detached from<br />

the building. Each zoning district<br />

has different height <strong>and</strong> letter area<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

Wall <strong>Sign</strong> A wall sign is attached<br />

to the building. For most commercial<br />

buildings,7%—<br />

10% <strong>of</strong> the wall area can be<br />

the sign letter areas. Each<br />

zoning district has different<br />

height <strong>and</strong> letter area st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

Window <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Sign</strong>age can<br />

be placed in the window if it is less than 25% <strong>of</strong><br />

the window area square<br />

footage.<br />

Sidewalk S<strong>and</strong>wich<br />

Boards A s<strong>and</strong>wich<br />

board may be placed<br />

along a sidewalk, but<br />

must be within 5’ <strong>of</strong> the<br />

building <strong>and</strong> be less<br />

than 6 square feet. S<strong>and</strong>wich<br />

Boards are only allowed during<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> business operation.<br />

Projecting<br />

<strong>Sign</strong>age A<br />

projection sign is<br />

a sign that is attached<br />

to the<br />

building. They<br />

are allowed in most commercial<br />

districts <strong>and</strong> can be up to 24<br />

square feet <strong>of</strong> sign area.<br />

Awning <strong>Sign</strong> <strong>Sign</strong>age can be<br />

placed on an awning if it is less<br />

than 25% <strong>of</strong> the awning area<br />

square footage.
