EuCheMS
EuCheMS (European Association for Chemical
and Molecular Sciences) is a non-profi t-making
organisation, founded in 1970. Its aim is to promote
co-operation in Europe between nonprofi
t-making scientifi c and technical societies in the fi eld
of chemistry and molecular sciences.
The organisation can draw upon signifi cant resources,
having 46 member societies which in total represent some
150,000 indi vidual chemists in academia, industry and
gover n ment in over 35 countries across Europe.
EuCheMS is an Associated Organisation of IUPAC.
EuCheMS takes over the role and responsibilities of the Federation
of European Chemical Societies and Professional
Institutions.
EuCheMS provides a powerful single voice for chemists and
the chemical sciences in Europe through its activities and
development of policy.
Czech Chemical Society
The Czech Chemical Society (CCS) represents the interests
of chemists in the Czech Republic since 1866. It helps its
members to continuously enhance their professional qualities
and maintain their high level, to disseminate new knowledge
from all fi elds of chemistry and promote those fi ndings. It participates
through its regional branches and professional groups
in the organization of conferences, seminars and workshops.
These activities are an essential platform for national and
international community of chemical communication. ČSCH
is a founding member of the Association of Czech Chemical
Societies (AČCHS), European Association of Chemical Societies
EUCheMS (formerly FECS), ChemPubSoc Europe (CPSE), and
ECTN-A, and a member of the Czech Association of Scientifi c
and Technical Societes.
Within the Association of Czech Chemical Societies CCS
collaborates with the Czech Society of Industrial Chemistry,
Czech Society of Chemical Engineering, Czech National
Committe for Chemistry (who represents the Czech chemical
community in IUPAC) and the Czech National Committee for
Chemistry Olympiad.
Through the ChemPubSoc Europe, CCS has the privilege
to partially own and infl uence the leading European chemistry
journals. Besides that, CCS publishes (since 1876) one
of the oldest chemistry journals, the Chemicke Listy journal
which belongs in the Czech Republic to the leading few
scientifi c journals that are published in the Czech language
and thus it takes care about the Czech language in the fi eld
of chemistry, i.a.. Part of the Chem. Listy is the quarterly Bulletin
which brings actual information and news from the fi eld
to all members.
EuCheMS Congresses
EuCheMS Congresses provide an opportunity for EuCheMS
member societies and Divisions to work with invited European
organisations to mount a European showcase event for
chemical sciences.
1st EuCheMS Chemistry Congress
27 – 31 August 2006, Budapest, Hungary.
The 1st Congress welcomed 2348 participants from 57 countries.
2nd EuCheMS Chemistry Congress Overview
16 – 20 September 2008, Torino, Italy, 'Chemistry,
The Global Science'.
The Aims of the conference were to promote chemistry and
chemical sciences at the cutting edge; to foster collaboration
among scientists in research, industry, education in support
of chemistry in the European Research Area and to enhance
the image of chemistry.
3rd EuCheMS Chemistry Congress – Chemistry –
the Creative Force
29 August – 2 September 2010, Nurnberg, Germany.
www.euchems-congress2010.org
The Czech chemical society has several prizes
to acknowledge the scientifi c achievements
of a chemist or the contribution to chemistry
teaching, chemical organisations, community
and image of chemistry. The highest awards are
the Medal of the CCS (fi rst awardee J.M.Lehn
in 2008) the Hanus Medal (fi rst awardee F. Šorm in 1966) and
the CCS Honorary Membership (fi rst awardee František Štolba
in 1882).
The Czech chemical society has currently almost 2500 members
where the majority are employees of universities, HEI,
schools and the Academy of sciences. The growing segment
of the members are students and a very important part
of the membership are the chemists from the industry and
business. CCS also has a very important group of corporate
members.
Among the activities of CCS are i.a. collaboration with HEI,
the Academy of sciences, schools, and industrial partners,
active participation in projects under national and European
grants, publication of a calendar of meetings, mainly from
the region, maintained together with the Slovak Chemical
Society.
CCS aims to be a substantial player in the fi eld of the chemistry
image maintenance and improvement, in the fi ght against
negative aspects of chemistry like illicit drugs and doping,
in presentation of scientifi c achievements to the professional
and general public, and what is the most important in service
to the members of the Czech Chemical Society.
The importance of CCS in the community was and is being
refl exed many times and i.a. in 1966 a special commemorative
Czechoslovak postal stamp was issued to highlight
the 100 year anniversary of the CCS founding date.
