High school Project The High School Project is a great opportunity for law students to engage with London youth. The purpose of the project is to expose youth to elements of the Canadian legal system in a court-like atmosphere. The project also provides an opportunity for current grade eleven and twelve students to glimpse into the exciting world of law school. Four classes of high school students will attend Western law in the fall semester, and three classes of high school students will attend Western law in the spring semester. Each class will attend on a different day. Each day that the program runs, the high school students will be in the law school during the open period (12:20PM – 1:50PM). The topic for each session will be the same – high school students will argue principles of youth sentencing using the case R v Todorovic. The case centers on a 15-year-old charged with murder, and generally piques the interest of high school students. High school students will be split into pairs at the beginning of the open period. Each pair will be assigned a position to argue and will be matched with a pair arguing the opposite position. Law student leaders will introduce each group of four students to the materials, and will moderate a minidebate within the group. Once each small group has had a chance to practice the delivery of their arguments, the entire class will reconvene. The class will be split into two groups based on assigned positions, and volunteers will have an opportunity to make submissions to robed adjudicators at the judge’s bench in the Moot Court Room. Successful applicants to this position will be expected to attend a mandatory training session during the open period on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 as well as the seven high school student a. sessions held during the open period (12:30-1:50) throughout the academic year. A training binder including instructions, case analysis and handouts will be provided to each law student leader in advance of the first program session.
