The research memo for this project is due December 01, 2013.
Each of the six Ontario common law schools will recruit one student to provide research and
writing for METRAC on legal topics that would be of assistance to survivors of intimate partner
violence and woman abuse. In particular, METRAC’s legal staff will assign topics to the
students to produce articles for the Ontario Women’s Justice Network website,
http://www.owjn.org/, or to produce research memoranda that can form the basis for such
articles, as needed. Please note this is an intensive writing experience with training and ongoing
feedback on the principles of plain language writing so that the information is accessible for the
intended audience.
Team 1 student.
The Euthanasia Prevention Association is looking for one student to track case law surrounding
end of life issues, both nationally and internationally for pro bono clients of Scher Law. The
organization is also looking for students to produce a legal newsletter involving case summaries
and comments while also writing articles for the Euthanasia Prevention Association. There will
also be student involvement in the Supreme Court of Canada appeal on Carter v AG Canada.
Students will be expected to complete monthly or bi-weekly check-ins onsite or by phone with
lawyer supervisor Hugh Scher. Workspace and research facilities can be provided to the
student if needed. The student at Western will visit the Euthanasia Prevention Association office
in London on a bi-weekly basis and check-in by telephone with Hugh Scher monthly. Students
may also be asked to prepare a paper/research memo on employment law and human rights
law in the winter semester depending on how efficiently they complete the main project.
Qualified applicants should have an interest in constitutional law, health law, human rights law,
and employment law. Students should also have good research and writing skills. Preference
will be given to bilingual students, however this is not a requirement.
