This is a national project that has students working under the supervision of Western’s Career
and Professional Development Office (CPDO). The intention of this project is to develop a
National Public Interest Guide to assist students interested in pursuing careers in the public
interest in Canada. The guide will list public interest organizations and employers, both articling
and post call, along with a description of the work completed and additional details about each
organization building upon the work already initiated by several law schools in Canada. The
guide will also provide career and job search advice from CDOs and employers as well as
information on what public interest employers are seeking from potential candidates.
This is not a substantive legal project. The project offers interested students an opportunity to
network with local public interest employers, and to help develop public interest employment
resources for law students across the country. Students placed on this project must have strong
communication skills, a demonstrated interest in working in the public interest or public interest
advocacy, and a willingness to network with local employers. Because public interest
organizations tend to be under-resourced, it can be difficult to reach representatives from these
organizations in order to gather the information needed for this project. It is therefore extremely
important that the students be self-motivated and resourceful, and that they demonstrate
initiative. Students must also have strong writing and research skills as well as a capacity to
work well both independently and as part of a team.
Lastly, in addition to the PBSC general training, volunteers placed on this project must be
available for a mandatory specialized training via conference call, provided by Stacy Keehn, on
October 22, 2013 from 12:00pm – 1:30pm, or 7:00pm – 8:30pm – which ever is more
convenient for the students.
