Bicentennial Memorial Dedication
Brings the Celebration to a Close
A C i t i z e n ’ s U p d a t e f r o m t h e C i t y o f B r e c k s v i l l e
On Sunday, October 23, the City unveiled the
new Bicentennial Memorial in front of City Hall.
The program was followed by a spectacular fireworks
display.
The obelisk is 20 feet high and is engraved with
three slogans that describe our community, “A Bird
Sanctuary,” “Building Our Future with Respect
for Our Past,” and “A Community of the Western
Reserve.” The obelisk is set in the center of a
garden area, which in the spring will be filled with
beautiful plantings and six granite benches.
A time capsule will be buried in the spring of 2012
in the area directly in front of the monument. The
capsule will not be opened until 2061 during the
Sestercentennial.
As part of the Bicentennial Memorial Project, residents
and members of the community had the
opportunity to place their name or family name
on the monument or to purchase a bench. There
are still approximately 19 spaces remaining on
the monument for additional benefactors. The
Bicentennial Memorial Project not only includes
the Obelisk Garden area created on City Hall
property in honor of our 200th birthday, but
also gifts that the Bicentennial will give to our
city school district for scholarships and funds for
the Brecksville Historical Association and the
Broadview Heights Historical Association for the
purchase of new technology.
The Committee is still asking residents to help
defray costs and raise funds for these projects.
The Friends of the Brecksville Bicentennial is a
registered 501c(3) non-profit, and your contributions
are tax deductible. Anyone donating $1,000
or more will have their name placed on the obelisk.
Anyone making a donation of any kind will
be listed in the time capsule.
Checks can be made payable to:
As the year end approaches, City Council
and the Administration will be considering
the 2012 budget. Our anticipated revenues
and expenditures for 2012 will be presented to
City Council by the Finance Director, Service
Director and the Mayor, who by Charter are
responsible for preparing the budget for City
Council’s review and approval. Because of the
economic development efforts of the City,
we are forecasting that we will have adequate
dollars to continue our services at their current
level as well as make continued improvements
to our infrastructure and City facilities.
Although there is still an uncertainty about this
economy and revenues to be gathered in 2012,
we will do as we do each year. We will use fismayor’s
message
The Bicentennial
Committee dedicated
the Bicentennial Obelisk
and Garden in front of
Brecksville City Hall
to City Council, the
Mayor and the citizens of
Brecksville in a ceremony
held on Sunday evening, October 23. For
decades to come the monument will be a lasting
tribute to our City’s first two hundred years
and for generations to come it will be a reference
point to all of us who have been fortunate
to live here during Brecksville’s 200th year.
In the spring, plantings will be added along
with six benches and flagpoles to complete
the walkway garden area. It is the City’s plan
to then erect bollards with plaques depicting
historical events that make up the history of
our community. A time capsule will be buried
in the spring. This time capsule is to be opened
in 50 years and the Bicentennial Committee
is still accepting ideas of what items should be
placed in the time capsule. Suggestions should
be made to the Mayor’s Office either in writing
or with a phone call. There is still space for the
engraving of 19 additional names on the obelisk
for those who wish to donate toward the
cost of this Bicentennial Memorial. If you are
interested in making a donation, please contact
the Mayor’s Office. Although the Bicentennial
year will conclude at year’s end, the committee’s
commemorative book will be published in 2012
and there will be some other events, most likely
at the time of the 2012 Home Days, which
will complete the celebration. Again, thank you
very much to all who participated in any way in
making this Bicentennial year the success it was.
Honoring Gallant Men
and Women
On November 11, Veterans Day, the
Chippewa Garden Club will present to the City
the Blue Star Memorial which will be erected
on Public Square naming the Square as a Blue
Star location in honor of our veterans. The City
truly appreciates the efforts of the Chippewa
Garden Club. City Hall will be closed that day
but the ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm on
Public Square; all are invited.
Thanks for the Good Times
Congratulations to the Recreation
Department for a successful BooVille
Halloween party at Blossom and Brecksville
Center for the Arts for Heartfelt Holidays presented
at the Community Center. Both events
could not have happened without a lot of hard
work by many people.
2
On to the Holidays!!!
City Hall will be closed on Thanksgiving,
November 24 but then the holidays will get
into full swing beginning with the City’s annual
Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony
on Sunday, December 4 with the parade stepping
off at 4:00 pm. The Annual Children’s
Christmas Play will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, December 10 and 11 at Old Town
Hall. The play is a production of the City staff
as a gift to the community. Following the
production, children are welcome to visit with
Santa at which time a commemorative picture
will be taken and a holiday ornament will be
given to the children. This tradition dates back
to 1971 and is always one of the highlights for
the staff and the community. Please make your
reservations early by calling the Community
Center at 546-2300. We ask that a donation
at the door of a non-perishable food item for
our local Brecksville Pantry food bank be your
admission fee.
Our annual Yuletide Hunger
Program is underway. Food and
monetary donations are being
accepted and will be distributed
to families in need from
Brecksville, Broadview Heights,
Seven Hills and Independence.
It is a joint community effort along
with our Brecksville-Broadview Heights City
School District. Those interested in volunteering
for this program should contact our Human
Services Department at 526-2499.
There is still space
for the engraving of
19 additional names
on the obelisk
Winter Already?!
As winter approaches and the snow fall is
upon us, please keep in mind your neighbors
who are elderly or have special needs. The
efforts of those who year after year are willing
to assist their neighbors with snow removal are
very much appreciated. The National Weather
Bureau is predicting a winter of colder than
average temperatures and heavy snow falls. We
ask all residents to please pay attention to the
snow removal guidelines in the City calendar.
Please do not push your snow onto the street
as it creates an unsafe condition and could be
the cause of a traffic mishap. It is the property
owner’s responsibility to clean their sidewalks
and we ask your cooperation. Any concerns or
comments regarding our snow removal efforts
should be directed to the Mayor’s Office or
Service Director Ron Weidig. We welcome
your calls. Please avoid driving too close to the
snowplows to avoid damage to your vehicle and
to give the drivers space to maneuver the large
trucks.
A Good Joe
On November 11, Police Patrolman Joe
Grzelak is retiring after 34 years of service with
our Police Department. We wish Joe the very
best and express our appreciation for his service
to this community. City Council passed a
Resolution of Appreciation and Commendation
to Officer Grzelak.
Larry Potla Steps Down
City Council President Larry Potla decided
not to seek re-election this year to another term
in office. For 13 years and 3 months, Larry
has served City Council demonstrating his
dedication to the community and performed
his responsibilities in an outstanding, professional,
tireless manner. In the 24 years I have
been fortunate to be the Mayor of Brecksville;
I consider Larry Potla to be one of the most
outstanding City Council members I was
fortunate enough to work with. His leadership,
ability, knowledge of the community
and his true concern for the residents
of this community were certainly
paramount. Larry has always
been a gentleman and has given
of himself as I know he will
continue to do volunteering for
our Human Services Department.
He began his career as a member of
our Charter Review Commission and was first
appointed to City Council to fill a vacancy and
won election thereafter. On behalf of the City
Administration, I express my sincere appreciation
to Larry for the courtesies and the cooperative
manner in which he worked with all of our
Department Heads and City staff. We will all
miss him but wish him well as he moves on to
other things. City Council will recognize his
service to the community at either a December
or January meeting of City Council. With the
retirement of Larry Potla, City Council will
have a new President beginning January, 2012
and a new member of City Council.

cal restraint in our budget and be conservative
in both spending and predicting revenues. We
are pleased that during the past 24 years we
have not found it necessary to ask the voters of
Brecksville to increase property taxes and we
continue to fund all City facilities with those
dollars we receive annually through income tax,
property tax and other revenues. As the budget
develops, we always take into consideration
our Capital Plan, budgeting on a 5 to 10 year
projection. We will make it known with our
budget the projects anticipated for 2012 along
with the day-to-day operation of running this
government.
Help with Your City’s Direction
City Council and the Administration are
reviewing the expiring terms of boards and
commission members and are interviewing
candidates for appointment at the first meeting
of City Council in January. Those interested in
applying should contact the Mayor’s Office or
City Council Clerk, Mary Scullin.
Blossom’s Future
I want to personally thank those residents
who served on the Blossom Hill Master Plan
Study Group. Their efforts should be commended
as they spent numerous hours reviewing
and compiling information that led to
their recommendations to the Mayor who
will in turn pass on those recommendations
to the Recreation Commission and ultimately
to City Council. I thank them for their service
to our community and for being part of
the future of this City’s development of the
Blossom property. They were: Chairman, Joe
Kosek, Ray Andrews, Ken Cunningham, Renee
Csuhran, Ken Ganley, Tim Harwood and Laura
Redinger.
Losses So Great
The year 2011, just as one’s life, was filled
with celebration and happiness but also sadness
and mourning. We lost a very fine public official
in the untimely death of Law Director Paul
A. Grau. Paul truly became family to many
of us and we miss him. We also suffered the
tragic news last summer of the death of Marine
Sergeant Dennis Kancler in Afghanistan. The
outpouring of support from this community
over the death of both Law Director Paul Grau
and Marine Sergeant Dennis Kancler made
us all reflect upon the goodness and the caring
of our community. Some of the proudest
moments I have had as Mayor were witnessing
the concern for the families of Sergeant Kancler
and Law Director Grau and the many gestures
of goodwill expressed by the business community,
our residents and those who took it upon
themselves to be part of the remembrance of
Law Director Grau and Sergeant Kancler.
Looking Back and
Looking Forward
There was much happiness and celebration
during our Bicentennial events. Seeing
the young people of our community walking
in the Bicentennial Parade interlaced with
some of our older and historic families gave
me pause to reflect upon the fact that generations
have combined to make Brecksville the
wonderful community it is. The pride we all
share in our community and the volunteerism
by those who put together all of the events
throughout the year was absolutely heartwarming
and remarkable.
There were many milestones that took place
over the Bicentennial year, from our children’s
success in scholastics to athletics. We can be
proud of the youth of our community. The
many volunteers who come forward day after
day to help our older residents or those with
special needs continues to grow – you certainly
make the lives of those who benefit from your
volunteerism far better than they would be
without you. I could go on and on praising
and expressing my gratitude for all of you who
volunteer.
I wish you all the very best in the New
Year, may you continue to find happiness and
prosperity, may you all have a very Merry
Christmas. Please continue to pray for our
troops and think of neighbors that you may in
some way reach out to and help.
The City is well along in the process of developing its 2012 budget. This exercise
begins with the department heads submitting their “wish list” of expenditures and projects.
The Mayor will then review the proposed budget and prioritize all requests before
making his final recommendations to Council. Prior to yearend City Council will
have a number of discussions about next year’s budget and it is expected that the 2012
budget will be finalized and passed by Council by our last meeting in December.
As we wind down 2011, I would personally like to thank the many residents who
have served on a number of City Boards and Commissions. If you have an interest in
getting more involved in some capacity with the City, do not hesitate to let us know, as there will be various
open positions.
Tuesday November 8th is Election Day and locally on the ballot we have candidates for both City
Council and the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Board. I urge you to research the positions taken
by the candidates and exercise your right to vote.
This has been a memorable year with numerous bicentennial activities. I extend my sincere thanks to
dozens of unselfish individuals who have worked so hard planning all the bicentennial events.
Holidays in Brecksville are always special. This Bulletin identifies a number of outstanding seasonal
events that are planned. I hope to see you around town during this joyful time of year.
This marks my last report to you as I have elected not to run again for Council. Since joining Council
in 1996 I have enjoyed my service to the residents and I thank you for voting for me and giving me this
wonderful opportunity to serve the town that I love. I also appreciate the confidence placed in me as
Council President for the last 6 years. I leave my position assured that the Administration and Council
will continue to effectively lead the City and keep Brecksville the envy of Northeast Ohio.
Happy Holidays to everyone!
The August and September
professional service bills were
approved by the committee
and council in the amounts of
$39,512.17 and $35,827.17
respectively. These bills include
services for legal, architectural,
building and engineering.
The Ohio Public Works
Commission (OPWC) notified the City that they
have authorized the City to obtain a $233,800 loan
from the OPWC to be used for the Wiese Road
Retaining Wall Improvement Project. This project
is scheduled to start in early 2012.
Working in conjunction with the Purchasing
and Finance Departments, the committee reviewed
and subsequently recommended to City Council
that the City continue to participate in a worker’s
compensation group rated pool in order to maximize
rate savings. Three separate group pools submitted
proposals this year. Once again this year,
the recommendation was to remain with the same
group pool from last year, Ohio Association of
Public Treasurers, for an estimated annual premium
of $202,765. In addition, Integrated Consultants/
CareWorks Consultants was selected as our third
party administrator for an annual fee of $3,000
which is a $2,300 reduction from the previous year.
We continue to see the positive results of our
economic development plans as our City income
tax revenue is up nearly $500,000 (6%) compared
to September 2010. The new Brecksville
Healthcare facility located at the site of the former
Pilgrim Inn opened for business in September
and we look forward to working with our newest
business resident. The Tru North headquarters
building is also nearing completion just south of
4
R e p o r t s f r o m c o m m i t t e e c h a i r p e r s o n s
Snowville Road on Brecksville Road. Various commercial
building renovations and expansions have
recently been approved by the Planning Commission
and City Council and we anticipate additional jobs
being added with these expansions.
As this busy Bicentennial
year comes to a close, many
projects have come to fruition.
New windows were installed in
City Hall, Old Town Hall and
the Fire Station. Additionally
at City Hall, the cupola was
removed, refurbished and
reinstalled and the building trim and gutters were
replaced. Inside, the Clerk of Courts office was
remodeled and updated. Numerous repairs and
maintenance projects were completed on building
roofs and boilers. An energy audit was completed
on 18 City buildings that will assist us in prioritizing
future projects. At Blossom Hill, a new gas well has
been installed and many improvements were done in
preparation of lighting the new synthetic field.
For the remainder of 2011 and looking to next
year, many projects are ongoing. Master plans are
underway for the Stadium Drive property (the old
school bus property) and the Blossom Hill/Tree
Farm property. Updating the entrance signs for the
Community Center and Human Services Center are
nearly complete. The 2012 flower and planting program
design has already been contracted.
Council has authorized $25,200.00 to Dimit
Architects to do architectural and engineering plans
for the expansion of the Service Department Boiler
House Building at Blossom. This space will allow
the City to house and maintain the vehicles and
equipment that are specific to the property on site
and allow several old storage buildings on the property
to be removed.
A fitting memorial to commemorate the last 100
years has also been completed, the Bicentennial
Memorial Obelisk with a dedication ceremony on
October 23rd. The monument was paid for by the
Bicentennial Committee and many donor families
and organizations and is prominently located
between City Hall and the Fire Station. Completion
of the project will come in the spring with the plantings,
benches, and flags and the placement of the
time capsules. We certainly thank all of those that
contributed to this wonderful project.
Thank you to the Administration for all of their
hard work and planning to make this Bicentennial
year so special. The Bicentennial Committee and
its members have worked hard for over two years to
make the events ones that we will never forget. As
winter and the holidays approach, the committee
will be preparing for many more projects…Think
of $42,057.70. These are replacement vehicles
for the Service Department.
The Purchasing Director was authorized to advertise
for bids for a rear loading replacement rubbish
packer. The rear load waste disposal packers continue
to be the preferred equipment for our methods of
collecting solid waste and recycling material. The
Service Director also requested that the Purchasing
Director seek bids for two AERCO Water Heating
The Police Department in cooperation with the
Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District
have received a grant in the amount of $60,914.00.
The COPS Grant entitled “Secure Our Schools”
will enable the City and schools to work together in
upgrading security and safety. The BBHCSD will
match that amount so the total for this project will
be $121,828.00. The school district had the money
set aside for this program. The grant includes all
schools and the Board of Education.
Ongoing excessive
amounts of rain throughout
the year and extremely low
temperatures during the
winter months continue to
take a heavy toll on our roads
and other infrastructure. As
a result, and upon the recommendation
of the Streets & Sidewalks Committee,
City Council authorized the additional amount of
$100,000.00 for concrete repairs in 2011.
Through the years, City Council has supported
the purchase of equipment which enables the Service
Department to perform various road program tasks,
such as asphalt repairs, that had previously been
contracted. A considerable amount of money has
been saved by performing the work in-house. We
commend the Service Department for doing an outstanding
job of maintaining and improving our roads
under difficult weather conditions and in spite of the
department being understaffed.
culvert under SR-82 has failed causing a slope slippage
affecting the northern edge of the paved berm.
City Council authorized Donald G. Bohning &
Associates, Inc. to work with ODOT to create the
required improvement plans for construction repairs
that are estimated to cost $250,000.00.
The Streets & Sidewalks Committee works closely
with the Administration to continually assess the
condition of our roads throughout the City and to
set priorities for the annual road program. Please be
aware of construction projects and use caution as you
travel through the City.
utilities Michael Harwood
It is important again to
thank you, the residents, for
your patience during this
past construction season. A
number of our scheduled
projects have come to successful
completions. We will
continue to monitor those
that are still underway and
provide updates.
We would like to provide the following scheduled
status as of Monday, October 24, on the current
projects under construction at various locations
throughout our community.
1) Snowville Road sanitary sewer improvements
project; the underground utility work has been
completed; the right of way and roadwork reconstruction
also have been completed. The lawn
areas have been seeded and will be revisited in the
spring for any areas that require re-seeding. The
pump station component of the project is scheduled
for a November start date, with completion estimate
for mid-January of 2012; once the installation is
complete, the testing and system acceptance will take
place. Upon acceptance of the system, the existing
waste water treatment plant will be demolished.
2) Riverview Road sanitary sewer improvements
project; construction is underway. The progress
of work has been slower than the contractor originally
anticipated due to a number of factors. The
City will continue to monitor, meet, and enforce
the contractor’s contractual obligations.
3) Miscellaneous storm sewer and slope repair
projects; the scope of work for the projects at
Old Royalton Road, Glen Forest, and Timber
Trail are completed, with the Gatewood project
under construction and scheduled for completion
November 1.
4) The storm sewer repairs at the Valleybrook development
have been completed, and improved performance
of the system during the past storms.
The following projects are currently in various
stages of design and subject to the review and
approval of the Utilities Committee, City Council,
and the City Administration.
1) Meadow Lane, Chippewa Road, and North Court
storm outfall and slope repair projects; the design
of each of the individual projects is approximately
85% complete; easement acquisition is required
and currently in process. The project’s construction
is anticipated for the 2012 construction
season.
2) Old Quarry Lane Pump Station Replacement
Project; the project is in the early stages of design
and requires easement acquisitions, as well. The
project’s construction is anticipated for 2012.
3) State Route 82 Culvert Repair/Replacement
Project; the project is in the engineering investigation
and early design stages and is another project
anticipated for the 2012 construction season.
4) Chippewa Creek Utility Line Abandonment
Project; the City Engineer and County are
working together to establish the design for the
temporary support system and final installation
modifications.
5) Chippewa Creek Spoils Study; CT Consultants,
an outside consultant is in the process of finalizing
their report and recommendations for the
spoils material in the Chippewa Creek.
In conjunction with this study and five other documents,
a presentation package was prepared by the
Administration and City Engineer that was presented
on October 13 at the Ohio Emergency Management
Facility. Mayor Hruby and City Engineer Wise
made a presentation regarding flooding events along
the Chippewa Creek to representatives of the U.S.
Geological Society, the National Weather Service,
ODNR, OEMA, USACE, FEMA, NRCS, and
HUD. Through the Mayor’s request, the Army
Corps of Engineers provided the forum for presentation,
but then followed up with a site visit on
Monday October 24. Representatives of the Army
Corps and U.S.G.S. were present to walk along the
Chippewa Creek at various locations, including two
locations upstream in the City of Broadview Heights.
We will continue to pursue the Army Corps Section
205 Study, as well as continue communications with
all agencies that can potentially provide assistance.
In 2011, we have all witnessed the highest precipitation
in recorded history. This year to date, we have
received over 53.83 inches of rain, with the month
of September being the wettest month of the season.
We continue to monitor storm systems throughout
the community that maintain and service storm
water. We have noted in the past the importance of
private property and commercial property retention/
detention basin maintenance requirements, and continue
to do so.
Any time that you have general questions regarding
utility matters or a specific utility project, please
do not hesitate to call.
Jump in, the Water’s Fine
That’s good advice. A study suggests that working out in 90-degree
water for three hours a week for eight months may help ease fibromyalgia
symptoms. Aquatic therapy is less stressful on the body and heated
water may help relax muscles. Where can you do this? In the warm water
Yuletide Hunger Program
For more than 25 years the Yuletide Hunger
Program has been reaching out to those who are less
fortunate.
The program began in 1983 following the death
of Brecksville resident Rusty Mansbery. Rusty’s
brother Dave wanted to thank his community for
the outpouring of help and concern for his family
during Rusty’s illness and he wanted to do so in a
meaningful way. And so Dave created the Yuletide
Hunger Program.
Preparations are underway for the Yuletide
Broadview Heights, Independence and Seven Hills
and the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School
Natural Gas and Electricity News
GAS
We have been blessed by some of the lowest prices in years. So low
in fact that it is recommended that you have a variable rate. No one
should be on a fixed rate. If you are you’re paying too much.
Check your November bill. If your rate is higher than $4.75 you’re
paying too much.
If your current supplier is IGS Energy call them at 1-800-280-4474
and tell them to switch you to their “Capped Variable Rate.” You’ll pay
approximately what Dominion East Ohio’s monthly variable rate is.
If you are with NOPEC call them at 888-848-7914 and tell them
you want to be sure you are on their variable rate.
If you have any other supplier call them and ask them to cancel
your service which will send you back to the original gas company,
Dominion East Ohio and then you are eligible to go with NOPEC.
WARNING: Whenever you request any sort of change check with
your current supplier to be sure you will not incur an early termination
fee. They can be as high as $100!
Other facts to be aware of:
If you are on budget billing check how much credit you have. Many
people have more than $1,000 in credit built up! Typical consumers
don’t need that much for the winter. It’s your money and you may
request all or a part of it although that will kick you out of budget billing.
ELECTRICITY
You are getting a small discount if the first page of your bill has
a line that reads, “NOPEC – First Energy Solutions” or just “First
Energy Solutions.” If your bill does not mention either of the above
call NOPEC at 800-292-9284 to enroll. Sorry, but the Illuminating
Company does not permit budget billing if you buy your electricity
from an Energy Choice provider.
The Brecksville web site, brecksville.oh.us now has a page for natural
gas and electricity news. Updates are also posted on the City’s cable
channel 20.
It’s Leaf Removal Time!
Again this fall the City of Brecksville is picking up leaves at curbside.
Please rake the leaves into neat rows along the edge of the road, BUT
NOT ONTO THE STREET.
Crews begin on the north side of the city and work to the south making
as many rounds as possible. Signs will be posted about three days in
advance to alert residents when workers will be in their neighborhood.
Leaf pickup will end on Friday, December 2.
The city asks all property owners to observe the following guidelines so
that the Service Department can serve you better.
Residents are strongly urged to refrain from parking on City streets
that are scheduled for leaf collection since it is impossible to collect piled
leaves that are near or beside parked cars.
All leaves must be located within three feet of the street pavement edge.
Leaves must NOT be placed in ditches, over loose/decorative stone
or in the roadway. Care should be taken to ensure that storm drains are
kept free of leaves. Also, please keep leaves away from mailboxes and fire
hydrants.
Try not to place leaves at the street edge until 3-4 days before scheduled
pickup. “Fresh” leaves placed in a row are much easier for the
Service Department to collect. Collecting piles of leaves that have been
compacted by rain or snow over several days slows the collection process
considerably.
ABSOLUTELY no tree branches, bricks, lawn clippings, or other debris
may be mixed with leaves. Contaminated piles will not be collected.
Property owners are responsible for leaf disposal after the curbside campaign
is completed by the Service Department.
If you have any questions please visit the Brecksville Service
Department web site at http://members.core.com/~brecksvc/refuse/leaf.
htm or call the Service Department Monday through Friday, 7:30 - 4:00
at 526-1384.
Avoid Natural Gas Shut Off
Dominion East Ohio works with customers to help them maintain
service during the winter months. Customers who are concerned that
they will not be able to maintain regular bill payments should contact
Dominion East Ohio immediately! DO NOT WAIT until you receive
a shutoff notice. It is easier and less expensive to maintain service rather
than to have it reconnected. Call 800-362-7557 for help and to learn
about government energy assistance programs.
Also, if you are under the impression that gas will not be turned off
during the winter for non payment please know that that is a MYTH!
Do not wait to do something if you have fallen behind in your payments.
Neighborhood Watch
If your neighbor has had a death in the family keep an eye on their
house during the funeral and calling hours. Homes have been burglarized
while the residents were attending calling hours or the funeral. Burglars
watch the paper for those times and enter the house knowing the occupants
will be gone during those publicized hours. If you see someone
near the house please DO NOT HESITATE to call the police. DON’T
WAIT!
Also, as we approach the holidays DO NOT let gifts in plain view of
burglars who may case your house.
And, DO NOT leave your car unlocked in the driveway or items in the
car that may tempt a burglar.
Heating Your Home Safely
Proper installation, use and maintenance of
winter heating devices are essential for reducing
the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Home heating fires are often caused by human
error, particularly through the misuse of portable
heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces.
• Have a qualified professional check your
home’s heating system annually. Furnaces,
fireplaces, wood stoves and their chimneys
should be inspected and cleaned prior to the
start of every heating season.
• Always use alternate sources of heat, such
as portable and kerosene heaters and wood
burning stoves with extreme caution and
according to their instructions. Remember,
space heaters need space–at least 3 feet from
anything that can burn.
• Install at least one carbon monoxide alarm
near sleeping areas to avoid falling victim
to carbon monoxide – a colorless, odorless,
potentially deadly gas produced by fuelburning
equipment including furnaces, wood
stoves, fireplaces and kerosene heaters. Call
the fire department if the alarm sounds.
• Install working smoke alarms on every level
of your home and inside each sleeping area
to alert you and your family in the event of
a fire.
You can reduce the risk of home heating fire
hazards by practicing the safety rules related to
various types of heating sources.
Fireplaces and Wood burning stoves
• Allow enough clearance between a wood
burning stove and combustible materials.
• Make sure the flue is open before lighting a
fire, and never close the flue while a fire is
still smoldering.
• Never use gasoline or lighter fluid to start a
fire.
• Burn only dry, seasoned wood and dispose of
the cooled ashes in a closed metal container
outside and away from your home.
• When lighting a gas fireplace, strike your
match first, then turn on the gas.
Portable Space Heaters
• When buying a space heater, look for a control
feature that automatically shuts off the
power if the heater falls over.
• Never leave a heater on when you are not in
the room or when you go to sleep, and do
not leave children or pets unattended around
any heating source. Unplug it when you are
not using it.
• Don’t use an extension cord with an electric
portable heater. The current from the
heater could melt the cord and cause a fire.
• Never use electric heaters near water – like
in your bathroom or near a water heater.
Kerosene Heaters
• Make sure the room has proper ventilation.
• Fill your heater with only crystal clear,
K-1 kerosene. Do not use any fluid that is
not recommended for your heater. Refuel
outside and only after the heater has
cooled down.
• Check the wick every couple of weeks during
the heating season. If the wick is dirty,
clean it according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
• Since a kerosene heater has a constant open
flame, it should not be used in a room
where there are flammable solvents, aerosol
sprays, gasoline or any type of oil.
The fifteenth annual “Shop With A Cop” raffle is underway. Police
officers who are members of the George Murray Fraternal Order of
Police Lodge #67 which comprises a number of suburbs in Cuyahoga
County raise funds every year which go directly toward a needy and
deserving child to help brighten their Christmas season. For every $110
raised, one child gets to go on a $125 shopping trip with a local police
officer. Many of the children take this opportunity to buy necessities
such as clothing and shoes. After the shopping trip the children are
treated to pizza by the police officers. Last year the police officers took
nearly 240 children shopping at Walmart. Walmart gave the kids a 20%
discount on their purchases.
It’s time to sign up for the Brecksville Christmas Parade. Whether you
would like to create a float or bring your whole group in holiday attire,
please submit an application to participate. The application must be
returned to the Community Center by November 22. Step-off will be at
4:00 pm on Sunday, December 4.
