All eyes on the Phoenix Park 

ALL eyes will be on the Phoenix Park this week as 

the first in a series of three massive gigs gets underway. 

Residents living near the 

park will be anxiously waiting 

to see if stringent new conditions 

attached to the three 

shows, starting on Wednesday, 

will prevent a repeat of the 

shameful scenes that marred 

one of the concerts last year. 

There were a number of 

deaths from suspected overdoses 

and several others were 

injured as violence broke out 

during a performance by dance 

act, Swedish House Mafia, in 

the park last year. 

The disgraceful scenes of 

public drunkenness disgusted 

local residents who called for 

such concerts to be banned 

from the park. 

Despite their reservations, 

Dublin City Council has 

granted a licence for concerts 

to be held this week, on July 

10, 13 and 14. 

Up to 40,000 fans are expected 

to attend each of the 

gigs which kick off on Wednesday

that although many residents 

in his constituency had expressed

granting of a public event licence

delighted to see that his request 

for an incident hotline had 

been agreed to.

COMMENT

IT’S generally accepted that the late Brian Lenihan 

was a fundamentally decent man with a 

great intellect. 

He was handed something of a poisoned chalice when 

appointed Minister for Finance in May 2008. And given his 

legal background he was a somewhat curious choice for the 

job. 

But in times of economic turmoil, Brian Lenihan sounded 

like he knew what he was talking about. In comparison to 

the often incoherent ramblings of then Taoiseach Brian 

Cowen, Lenihan was an articulate and reassuring voice in 

the political wilderness. 

Of course, we wouldn’t have been so reassured had we 

known of Lenihan’s inner turmoil as the Celtic Tiger started 

to devour itself just months after he took the helm. 

We now realise that Brian Lenihan was seriously out of 

his depth – and this is understandable given the unprecedented 

scale of the crisis unfolding at the time. The most 

enduring image of that chaotic September is of the minister 

sitting in economist David McWilliams’ kitchen eating cloves 

of garlic as the clock ticked on financial Armageddon. 

Through the prism of hindsight, the bank guarantee and 

bailout of a number of financial institutions is largely seen 

by ordinary Irish people as a disastrous move. 

Taoiseach Enda Kenny recently claimed there was an 

“axis of collusion” between Fianna Fail and the Anglo 

bankers. It was an extremely serious allegation to make and 

it remains to be seen if he has any evidence to stand up his 

claim. 

I personally don’t believe that senior Fianna Fail figures 

like Brian Lenihan would have been part of any conspiracy 

that would ultimately have the effect of ending Ireland’s 

economic sovereignty. 

There is little doubt that the Government of the day 

made mistakes in September 2008 and in the months that 

followed. At the very least they can be accused of poor 

judgement or even incompetence. 

Fianna Fail were punished severely for their role in the 

collapse of the economy in the last general election, although 

polls suggest that much has been forgiven since 

then. 

Brian Lenihan has since passed away after a remarkably 

brave battle with cancer. He worked through ill health to try 

to contain a crisis that he and his Government colleagues 

had helped create. 

But we need to ensure that his legacy is not unfairly tarnished 

by cheap political point scoring. Let’s not forget that 

he is no longer around to defend himself. 

Dublin cyclists 

wanted for the Loop 

THERE was a great turnout for the recent launch of this 

year’s Cuisine de France Leinster Loop, Ireland’s top charity 

cycle event. 

Guests included cycling legend and ambassador for the Leinster 

Loop, Stephen Roche, who outlined the challenges faced by 

professional cyclists in their daily recovery at a grand tour event. 

Joe Duffy of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, a 

key beneficiary of the charity event, spoke of the advances being 

made in breast cancer treatments, further research and the importance 

of funding.

However, Pat Allison of the Navan Road 

Community Council said that despite the 

added precautions locals remained anxious 

about the concerts. 

“All eyes are on the Phoenix Park this 

week,” she said. “We have had amicable 

meetings with the promoters and acknowledge 

the extra precautions being put in place. 

“We are also fully aware that there will be 

a different following attracted to these particular 

concerts. 

“But that does not move us from our position 

that the park is an inappropriate location 

for concerts of this type and scale, full 

stop. 

“This is a protected public park that is 

supposed to be available to the public all year 

round and that is a fact. 

“These concerts should be staged in a 

more appropriate city centre venue that is designed 

and built for this purpose. 

“This will be an anxious week for residents,” 

she added. “We have adopted a wait 

and see approach as there is little else we can 

do for the time being.” 

1916 society

Annoying summer guests 

How to prevent and combat parasite attacks 

Ticks, fleas and worms attack dogs, especially in summer. 

The vets from the specialist pet store chain, Maxi Zoo, tell 

you about the most common parasites. 

Fleas 

As soon as the fleas are noticed, you should treat animals 

and their beds quickly and thoroughly. Then you shouldclean 

your house and comb out your pet. For long-term results 

there are so called development inhibitors which stop 

eggs from hatching. 

Ticks 

Ticks become active at 15°C, and suck the blood of their 

host. Hidden deep within the fur they are often only recognisable 

when they have sucked themselves quite full. 

Therefore it is better to take preventative measures and 

find out about suitable products. 

Worms 

Worms are around the whole year. The eggs of tapeworms 

can live for a long time in the cold, and dogs can become 

infected at any time. Worms and their eggs are not visible 

at the same time and it is difficult to tell if an animal has 

worms or not. Regular worming treatments can help prevent 

them.

Fantastic 

Feat 

A NORTHSIDE man is celebrating after becoming the 

oldest man ever to swim the North Channel. 

Fergal Somerville (50), from 

Beaumont, achieved his extraordinary 

feat on June 16 when he 

swam from Northern Ireland to 

Scotland in a time of 12 hours 

and 21 minutes. 

Fergal, who even encountered 

a shark on his gruelling 

journey, left Donaghadee in 

County Down at 5.10am and arrived 

on the Scottish coast, just 

north of Portpatrick, at 5.21pm. 

It proved to be second time 

lucky for the plucky Northsider. 

On July 10, 2012, his first attempt 

ended due to bad weather 

when he was one and a half 

hours into the swim. 

Fergal, who swam the English 

Channel in 2011, conceded 

that there were times when he 

felt he wasn’t going to make it. 

“There were lots of times 

but I just wouldn’t give up,” he 

told Northside People. 

“Every time I felt like stopping 

I just pushed harder. I knew 

the early start meant prolonged 

cold for a number of hours. I 

had practiced and swam in cold 

water as often as I could, even 

completing an International Ice 

Mile in February in 3.5C in 

Lough Dan. 

“The average temperature 

was between 9.5 and 10 degrees 

- the coldest temperature it was 

ever swam in given our coldest 

winter for 62 years.” 

Prior to the race, Fergal used 

a permanent marker to write the 

letter ‘E’ on the palm of his 

hand and a ‘C’ on the other – a 

reference to his sons Eoin and 

Conor. He felt this would help to 

drive him on when things got 

tough. 

“When I needed to pick 

things up (or to just stop feeling 

sorry for myself) I would drive 

on at an increased pace,” he 

said. 

“As the left hand entered the 

water I would strain ‘Eoin’ and 

pull all the way through to the 

hip. 

“As the right hand took its 

turn I would strain ‘Conor’ and 

again pull through to the hip.” 

Fergal’s stroke rate started 

off at approximately 71 strokes 

per minute. 

“By the final few minutes the 

rate had fallen to 61 strokes per 

minute,” he said. “I had an average 

of 65 strokes per minute, or 

over 50,000 strokes for the day. 

“To prepare for this I swam 

over 1,000km in each of the last 

three years - 1,000,000 metres or 

40,000 lengths of your local 

pool.” 

During the swim, Fergal said 

he had an “interesting experience” 

with a shark. 

“As I battled along in the 

bright (about 9.15am), I saw a 

shark swimming about two and 

a half metres below me,” he 

said. 

“The great blue elegant beast 

was about eight to 10 feet long. I 

wondered if I was going to start 

flailing my arms and screaming 

to be taken into the boat before I 

was devoured. But I hadn’t 

changed my stroke or pace. 

“In a flash I decided the 

swim was too important and I

kept going. I didn’t signal to the 

boat, although I looked across to 

see if they were aware of the 

shark I saw or possibly others. 

There was no reaction from 

them at all. I kept going. The 

shark passed under me another 

three times.” 

Fergal, who was cheered on 

by his wife Mags as well as his 

sons and friends, said he only 

found out the day after the swim 

that he was the oldest man to 

have achieved the feat. 

“If I had known that I 

would be the oldest at 50, five 

years older than the next swimmer, 

I don’t think I would have 

thought it possible,” he said.

charity and the beneficiaries this 

time will be the Irish Cancer Society. 

“My son, Eoin, who lives in 

Washington DC, suggested a 

cancer charity when Mags and I 

visited him last April,” he added. 

“My mother died from cancer 

years ago, but he and she 

were very close and he carries 

her rosary beads forever.”

Eastern Bay Swim Team, said he 

owes a substantial part of his 

success to Declan Proctor, Robbie 

Clarke, John Daly, Tony 

Mullins, Nichola Gillil and, Jerry 

Kiersey and many more. 

He also reserved special

who couldn’t be on the support 

boat.

It was heartening to see your 

paper engage with this issue which is 

crucial to both our democratic life 

and our economic recovery. 

I am concerned that there has not 

been sufficient debate on an issue 

that is of such magnitude that it will 

involve as many as 40 separate 

amendments to our Constitution. 

The Government recently used its 

large majority to curtail debate in the 

Dáil on the Bill which will give effect 

to the referendum on Seanad abolition. 

This lack of proper discussion 

means there is a real danger that people 

will not be sufficiently informed 

on the key issues that are at stake. 

I am convinced that closing the 

Seanad will impinge on the key national 

tasks of tackling unemployment 

and moving our country 

beyond this recession. Ireland lost its 

economic sovereignty precisely because 

our political system lacked accountability 

and had insufficient 

policy expertise at its disposal. 

If we abolish the Seanad, this will 

not improve matters. In fact, on the 

contrary, we will be compounding 

the errors of the recent past. 

A single chamber parliament will 

make the Government less accountable 

and there will be less scrutiny of 

legislation. This country needs a reformed 

Seanad Éireann that will create 

a space for people with expertise 

in social and economic policy to 

make a contribution to our national 

decision-making processes. 

We need a strong two-chamber 

parliament with committed national 

legislators. 

In short, we need more democracy, 

not less democracy. That is why 

I will be appealing to all Dubliners to 

vote against the Government’s shortsighted 

and ill-conceived plans to 

abolish the Seanad.

Photography businesses in jobs warning 

CHANGES to photo requirements for the new credit 

card style driving licence may result in the loss of 500 

jobs, an industry group has warned. 

From the end of September, 

driving licence applicants will 

no longer be able to use traditional 

printed photos purchased 

from Photo ID booths, photography 

shops and pharmacies. 

Instead they will have to attend 

one of the new National 

Driving Licencing Service 

(NDLS) public offices when applying 

for a licence to have their 

identity verified and their photograph 

and signature digitally 

captured. 

Members of Photo ID Professionals 

- a group formed to 

represent the views of people 

that are gainfully employed in 

the industry - gathered at the 

Dail recently to highlight their 

case. The group have warned 

that 500 jobs are at risk if the 

decision is not reversed. 

Photo ID Professionals also 

believe there will be major inconvenience 

for people having 

to travel to one of the offices 

and that driving licence applicants 

will be unhappy that they 

are not getting to choose their 

own photo.

to us in writing via

questions from numerous TDs

Road Safety Authority (RSA) 

said the SAFE2 security validation 

(which requires people to 

present in person at a new National 

Driver Licence Service 

centre from October 1 if applying 

for a licence) is about ensuring 

that the person who attends 

the Agent Network for a licence 

validates who they are to the 

SAFE2 standard. 

“Part of that standard is the 

capture of a digital photograph 

and signature at the Agent Network,” 

she told Northside People. 

“SAFE2 is a standard registration 

process and not a photograph 

standard process. 

“The RSA’s objective is to 

introduce the new Plastic Card 

and SAFE2 licensing validation 

system without placing an additional 

increase in the cost of delivering 

the service on the State 

nor place any additional costs 

on the customer. 

“The RSA met representatives 

of the groups before the

for the new service and met 

them after the tendering 

process, together with the industry 

representative body 

IBEC. 

“Specifically the Irish Pharmacy 

Union and IBEC (Photo 

ID Industry) made representations 

to the RSA at a meeting 

on January 21 2013, requesting 

that the contract awarded for 

driver identity validation be 

amended to use traditional 

printed photos rather than the 

digital photo capture process 

proposed by all tenders who 

tendered.”

RSA agreed to explore the feasibility

renewal or change of details applications.”

Man admits making 

‘stupid’ call to gardai 

A MAN who made a false report to gardaí that shots had 

been fired has been given a suspended jail term. 

Wayne Judge (22), of 

Shangan Green, Ballymun, 

pleaded guilty to one charge of 

making a false report arising 

out of an incident on July 8, 

2011. 

Garda Damien Rogers told 

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court 

that gardaí received a call 

through the 999 system at 

12:43am. 

During the call, a male, 

who said his name was John 

Dunne, claimed that four shots 

had been fired in Shangan 

Park, Ballymun. 

The caller said that windows 

had been broken and that 

the culprits had left in a Nissan 

by Emer Connolly 

Almera car. 

“Three Garda cars were 

dispatched to the scene and 

there was no evidence of broken 

windows,” said Garda 

Rogers. 

He told Ronan Kennedy 

BL, prosecuting, that Judge’s 

aunt was living in that area. 

Gardaí phoned the number 

from which the 999 call 

had been made and a male 

answered. He said his name 

was Wayne Judge and gardaí 

arranged to meet him at 

Shangan Park. 

When gardaí met him, his 

speech was slurred and he said 

that “some kids” had made the 

call. 

Judge was interviewed 

later in the year in relation to 

the incident and told gardaí 

that he was drunk at the time 

and did not remember the call. 

He told gardaí it was a 

“stupid” call and he should 

not have made it. 

Defence counsel Fiona 

Murphy BL said her client accepts 

he lied when he said that 

children had made the call. 

She said he had entered an 

early plea of guilty and wished 

to apologise. 

She said her client's mother 

died when he was a teenager 

and alcohol abuse had led to 

his offending behaviour. 

“Things spiralled out of 

control,” she added. 

Judge Desmond Hogan 

said it was a serious offence 

and also “an annoying” one 

which resulted in a lot of 

Garda manpower being 

utilised. 

He said it was a “stupid, 

drunken” incident and noted 

that Judge has more than 50 

previous convictions, but said 

he seems “to be getting his act 

together”. 

He imposed a two-year jail 

sentence, suspended for three 

years, and ordered Judge to 

carry out 240 hours’ community 

service.

St Pat’s 

closure is 

welcomed 

THE decision last week to close St Patrick’s Institution 

on the North Circular Road received a warm welcome 

on the Northside. 

Minister for Justice Alan 

Shatter said the prison would 

be closed and all prisoners and 

staff moved to different institutions 

within six months. 

It follows a report from the 

Inspector of Prisons that recommended 

that the "name St 

Patrick's should be consigned to 

history”. 

The report stated that the 

prison should be closed, and 

that prisoners and existing staff 

be dispersed to other institutions 

where they could be guaranteed 

safe and secure custody. 

Minister Shatter said all 17- 

year-olds currently serving a 

sentence in St Patrick’s Institution 

would be transferred to a 

dedicated unit in Wheatfield 

Prison. 

The 18-to 20-year-old population 

will also be transferred to 

Wheatfield. 

The Peter McVerry Trust, 

which works with homeless 

youths, welcomed the announcement 

by Minister Shatter. 

“We welcome the closure 

of St Patrick’s Institution, a 

move that the Peter McVerry 

Trust has long advocated for,” 

said Pat Doyle CEO. 

“We do, however, have concerns 

regarding the decision to 

detain young offenders at 

Wheatfield Prison but note the 

commitment given by the Minister 

for Justice and the Director 

of the Irish Prison Service 

Michael Donnellan that this 

will be a temporary measure.” 

Mr Doyle said the charity 

was now calling on the Government 

to dedicate all necessary 

resources to ensure that 

the purpose built facility at the 

Oberstown campus opened at 

the earliest opportunity. 

“We cannot allow a situation 

to arise whereby youths become 

detained for a long 

periods of time in facilities that 

were designed for short term 

use,” he added. 

Maria Corbett, the acting 

by Neil Fetherston 

chief executive of the Children’s 

Rights Alliance, congratulated 

the Government on its 

decision to close St Patrick’s. 

“The continued detention 

of children and young people 

in St Patrick’s has been a major 

blot on the Government’s 

human rights record,” she said. 

“A commitment to close the facility 

is a most welcome announcement 

for which we 

commend the Government.” 

Ms Corbett also made the 

point that the development of a 

new child detention facility at 

the Oberstown campus must be 

progressed as a matter of urgency. 

“Conditions in St Patrick’s 

have been of long concern to 

the Alliance,” she added. “We 

first highlighted our serious 

concerns back in 1998 and 

2006 to the United Nations 

Committee on the Rights of the 

Child, and in 2002, with the 

European Committee for the 

Prevention of Torture and Inhuman 

or Degrading Treatment 

or Punishment 

“We have reiterated our 

concerns for more than a 

decade with successive Government 

ministers.” 

The Labour TD, Aodhán Ó 

Ríordáin, also welcomed the 

closure, stating that it had been 

inevitable for some time. 

“The facilities in St Pat’s 

were totally unsuitable with the 

Inspector for Prisons finding repeated 

violations of standards 

in best practice of care,” he 

said. 

“There was a particularly 

high risk to the emotional and 

physical wellbeing to those in 

the institution under the age of 

18. 

“I have long advocated that 

the housing of children in adult 

prisons is wholly inappropriate 

and I raised this issue on the 

floor of the Dáil in the past.” 

Fringe festival wants 

sports fanatics

fans in Ghent and this September they are coming to Dublin to

A: I can understand how difficult 

it must be for your daughters to 

concentrate in their bedrooms. 

Teenagers generally have an 

array of gadgets surrounding 

them that tend to be more interesting 

than study. I’m sure we all 

have vivid memories of having 

to study and the difficulty of 

being confined to a room of text 

books when the sun is shining 

outside!

create a space that is comfortable,

The study environment is incredibly 

important for your 

daughters. Certain colours can 

help with concentration and 

memory retention so it’s important 

to incorporate some of 

these shades into their bedrooms. 

Stress levels and anxiety can 

cause lack of sleep also, so it’s 

also important that the shades 

you choose aren’t too busy and 

disrupting. One of the best ‘brain 

shades’ is green. 

Green shades create an atmosphere 

of emotional balance

of my favourite green shades 

from Crown include Mellow Sage, 

Soft Khaki and Apple Mist. 

Sunny yellow shades are also 

thought to promote happiness

Daze and Sunrise are gorgeous. 

You could use them on a single 

wall, like the wall their desks rest 

against or beside their beds to 

help them sleep better at night. 

Light blue shades are also 

known for their soothing abilities 

and promote relaxation, clearthinking 

and decision making - 

perfect for a busy mind. Take a 

look at Blue Light, Platinum and 

Powder Blue for inspiration. 

Ultimately, your girls will be 

happiest studying in a room that 

is painted a shade they like, so 

allow them to have input in the 

decision-making process. 

When choosing window 

dressing for the room, I would be 

inclined to go for neutral colour 

blinds over curtains as this will 

help create a clean, fresh open 

space. In this instance I would 

also steer clear of blackout blinds 

as they can be deceiving when it 

comes to determining the time 

of day.

ONE of the major hurdles to be 

overcome in re-decorating, redesigning 

or extending your 

home if finding a way to get 

rid of all the old stuff. 

While a revamp of your 

property is hard work, the pay 

off is a freshly decorated and 

refurnished house that feels 

like a brand new home. 

But getting rid of the old to 

make room for the new is just 

as exhausting and there’s little 

or no reward at the end. However, 

now that the kids are on 

holiday, you’ll have a few 

extra pairs of hands to help 

out. 

After choosing the new 

look for your home you suddenly 

realise there’s a whole 

load of junk cluttering up your 

dream design. And for some of 

us, sentimental attachment to 

once-loved possessions can 

make the clear-out an emotional 

minefield. 

Environmental awareness 

and new waste management 

laws mean ditching your old 

stuff is no longer a simple 

process and the end result can 

be a garage or back garden 

with an ever-increasing pile of 

broken furniture and clappedout 

electrical goods. 

However, with a little bit of 

planning you can still trash 

your stuff efficiently and economically 

without causing too 

much damage to the environment. 

It’s easy to become over 

sentimental when sorting out 

what has to go but you need 

to take stock with a cold and 

calculating eye. Rope in a 

friend who may be able to 

help you balance practicality 

with nostalgia and divide your 

possessions into three categories. 

Poor: 

If it’s broken, ripped or has 

missing parts it has to be 

dumped. Charity shops don’t 

have the resources to repair 

goods and the underprivileged 

don’t need stained mattresses, 

Betamax video recorders or 

TV’s with no sound. 

Good: 

Items that are in good repair 

not outdated can find new 

life in the home of a relative 

or friend. Keep in mind anybody 

that has just moved into 

a new home and may be on 

the lookout for new stuff. 

Charity shops will welcome 

quality second-hand goods 

and in some cases may even 

be willing to pick them up. Another 

option is selling. Check 

out the Buy and Sell or look in 

your local newspaper for upcoming 

car boot sales and 

make a small profit from your 

clear-out. 

Excellent: 

Brand new or as-good-as 

new items are difficult to let 

go of because you – or worse 

a kindly relative – has 

spent good money on them. 

However, a good clear-out 

takes no prisoners. Sell them, 

donate them or find a new 

place for them in your home. 

A great idea for getting rid 

of good second-hand stuff and 

brand new items is to host a 

‘pick-up party’. Take digital 

photos and e-mail invitations 

to family, friends and acquaintances. 

Prepare a simple buffet 

and let your unwanted 

possessions walk out the door 

with your guests. 

For large items that have 

to be dumped it’s worth putting 

in a call to your local authority. 

Some councils have 

regular kerb-side collections 

and will take away bulky noncommercial 

waste for free. 

Most local authorities also 

house & home 

have at least one civic 

amenity site where large 

items can be brought. You’ll 

need to put in a phone call as 

each has its own opening 

hours and policy. 

Hiring a skip is another 

way to get rid of bulky waste 

but its not cheap. Even a small 

skip can cost up to e100 and 

you’ll be surprised at how 

quickly it fills up. Don’t leave 

it out overnight or you may 

find it filled with other people’s 

waste! 

Another no-no these days 

is allowing your waste to be 

taken away by passing opportunistic 

‘waste collectors’ who 

offer to dump your old stuff 

for knock-down prices. 

Often these guys are unlicensed 

and will illegally dump 

your waste. If it’s traced back
