Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008 eventual future construction over the next several years, while Maple Grove Road will have local improvements and upgrades due to the implementation of new access arrangements that will be carried out by the developers in question. On the assumption that between 20% and 40% of the Jackson Trails daily residential traffic would be attracted to the Maple Grove Road Corridor, and that the connecting link would also attract a small portion (±10%) of the daily traffic flow between Stittsville and the City of Ottawa to/from the east, the daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road depicted on Figure 4 are estimated to occur. Figure 4: Projected Daily Traffic Impact on Maple Grove Road Corridor Resulting from Stittsville Main Street Extension Intersection with Maple Grove Road On the other hand, it is noteworthy that were the Stittsville Main Street not extended to intersect with Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street, the following would be the expected repercussions: a. All Jackson Trails traffic would be confined to the Hazeldean Road Corridor to some extent, which is experiencing increasing congestion with no relief in sight for several years; b. Potential diversion of Jackson Trails traffic to Johnwoods Street with resultant added pressure to close the Maple Grove/Johnwoods Street intersection, which, as will be seen later, is not recommended; c. Potential diversion of Jackson Trails traffic to Johnwoods Street south and the proposed east-west minor collector, linking Johnwoods Street with the Huntmar 7

Possible impact on the future transit service in the area, although the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection could be limited to transit vehicles only. In view of the above, this report recommends, and assumes, the completion of the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection for all traffic. 4.2 Potential Closure of Johnwoods Street Link to Maple Grove Road As depicted on Figure 3, Johnwoods Street currently carries two way peak hour traffic volumes totalling approximately 125 vph to 215 vph (morning and afternoon respectively) at its north end where it intersects with Maple Grove Road. These peak hour traffic volumes translate into average daily totals of approximately 1700 vpd, the majority of which transfers to/from Maple Grove Road east of Johnwoods Street. Based on the current pattern of turning traffic at the Maple Grove/Johnwoods intersection, it is estimated that were this intersection to be closed, there would be a considerable reduction in the amount of daily traffic on Maple Grove Road to the east. Closure would of course not result in the removal of 100% of the current traffic to/from Maple Grove Road east as it is likely that some traffic would divert to Alon Street from Johnwoods Street in order to get to the Maple Grove Road corridor and eventually more would likely transfer to the future collector road proposed to link Johnwoods Street through the future Fairwinds East, Tartan and Fairwinds South subdivisions, to Huntmar Drive, which is the more likely longer-term consequence of the intersection closure. Traffic is also likely to transfer to the Johnwoods Street/Hazeldean Road intersection resulting in additional traffic on Hazeldean Road, which until it is widened to four lanes, has very limited capacity for additional traffic east of Bryanston Gate. Nevertheless, the closure of the existing Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection is assumed to result in a reduction of up to 90% in the daily volume of traffic to/from Maple Grove Road east, i.e., a daily reduction of approximately 1400 vpd, two-way as depicted on Figure 5. Between Alon Street and Johnwoods Street, a daily increase of 300 vpd is anticipated. It is noteworthy that traffic volumes on Johnwoods Street have begun to reduce with the completion of the Huntmar Drive Extension. Other measures such as the completion of the Stittsville Main Street Extension and the Kanata West Main Street are also likely to further reduce the use of Johnwoods Street by non-local traffic. The closure of the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection would therefore create considerable inconvenience for Bryanston Gate residents for a declining benefit over time. 8
