Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
1.0 INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT SCOPE
Depicted on Figure 1 are the transportation network alignments (Roads and Rapid Transit)
within Kanata West that were recommended in the Kanata West Road Network
Environmental Study Report, completed in 2005.
As shown, Maple Grove Road has two distinct sections either side of Huntmar Drive. East of
Huntmar Drive, Maple Grove Road is to be widened to a four-lane cross-section within a 30
to 37.5 m right-of-way. West of Huntmar Drive, existing Maple Grove Road is to be
downgraded and replaced by the proposed Kanata West Main Street linking the Stittsville
Main Street Extension located within the Jackson Trails Residential Community west of
Johnwoods Street, with Palladium Drive.
Since the approval of the Kanata West Development Plan by City Council, development has
been ongoing within Kanata West.
To date, the Huntmar Drive Extension has been completed, linking Maple Grove Road with
Hazeldean Road/Iber Road, and the Fairwinds South residential subdivision (Mattamy
Corporation) is under construction.
While the future of Maple Grove Road east of Huntmar Drive has been settled and the
required right-of-way protected through the development process, there is a question about
the short to medium-term future of Maple Grove Road west of Huntmar Drive, until such
time as the Kanata West Main Street has been implemented (not likely to occur for several
years).
Consequently, City of Ottawa staff have requested that a Transportation Overview be
prepared to address the short to medium-term upgrades that will be required along Maple
Grove Road west, until such time as the full Main Street Extension is in place.
Following a preliminary meeting with City Kanata West staff and affected developers
(represented by Tartan Corporation), the following issues were identified to be addressed in
the Transportation Overview.
• Traffic impact of recent opening of the Huntmar Drive Extension;
• Potential traffic impact resulting from Stittsville Main Street extension to a T-
intersection with Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street;
• Potential traffic impact of closing Johnwoods Street at Maple Grove Road;
• Potential traffic impact of proposed Mattamy Subdivisions on Maple Grove Road –
Fairwinds South, North and West;
• Potential traffic impact of proposed Tartan Subdivision on Maple Grove Road;
• Potential traffic impact of Claridge Subdivision on Maple Grove Road; and
• Based on the projected future peak hour/daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road,
between the Stittsville Main Street Extension and Huntmar Drive, recommend an
appropriate right-of-way, cross-section and individual intersection lane requirements
to address the needs, as determined.
The locations of the above subdivisions are depicted on Figure 2.
