1.0 INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT SCOPE
Depicted on Figure 1 are the transportation network alignments (Roads and Rapid Transit)
within Kanata West that were recommended in the Kanata West Road Network
Environmental Study Report, completed in 2005.
As shown, Maple Grove Road has two distinct sections either side of Huntmar Drive. East of
Huntmar Drive, Maple Grove Road is to be widened to a four-lane cross-section within a 30
to 37.5 m right-of-way. West of Huntmar Drive, existing Maple Grove Road is to be
downgraded and replaced by the proposed Kanata West Main Street linking the Stittsville
Main Street Extension located within the Jackson Trails Residential Community west of
Johnwoods Street, with Palladium Drive.
Since the approval of the Kanata West Development Plan by City Council, development has
been ongoing within Kanata West.
To date, the Huntmar Drive Extension has been completed, linking Maple Grove Road with
Hazeldean Road/Iber Road, and the Fairwinds South residential subdivision (Mattamy
Corporation) is under construction.
While the future of Maple Grove Road east of Huntmar Drive has been settled and the
required right-of-way protected through the development process, there is a question about
the short to medium-term future of Maple Grove Road west of Huntmar Drive, until such
time as the Kanata West Main Street has been implemented (not likely to occur for several
years).
Consequently, City of Ottawa staff have requested that a Transportation Overview be
prepared to address the short to medium-term upgrades that will be required along Maple
Grove Road west, until such time as the full Main Street Extension is in place.
Following a preliminary meeting with City Kanata West staff and affected developers
(represented by Tartan Corporation), the following issues were identified to be addressed in
the Transportation Overview.
• Traffic impact of recent opening of the Huntmar Drive Extension;
• Potential traffic impact resulting from Stittsville Main Street extension to a T-
intersection with Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street;
• Potential traffic impact of closing Johnwoods Street at Maple Grove Road;
• Potential traffic impact of proposed Mattamy Subdivisions on Maple Grove Road –
Fairwinds South, North and West;
• Potential traffic impact of proposed Tartan Subdivision on Maple Grove Road;
• Potential traffic impact of Claridge Subdivision on Maple Grove Road; and
• Based on the projected future peak hour/daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road,
between the Stittsville Main Street Extension and Huntmar Drive, recommend an
appropriate right-of-way, cross-section and individual intersection lane requirements
to address the needs, as determined.
The locations of the above subdivisions are depicted on Figure 2.
2.0 CURRENT TRAFFIC VOLUMES
Peak period morning and afternoon traffic counts were carried out recently following the
opening to traffic of the Huntmar Drive Extension linking Maple Grove Road at Huntmar
Drive with Hazeldean Road at Iber Road.
The intersections counted were Hazeldean/Iber/Huntmar Drive, Maple Grove Road/Huntmar
Drive and Maple Grove Road/Johnwoods Street.
These morning and afternoon peak hour counts are depicted on Figure 3, along with other
recent counts on Hazeldean Road, of which are to be found in Appendix A.
In the morning peak hour Maple Grove Road carries two-way traffic volumes of
approximately 50 vph west of Johnwoods Street and volumes ranging from approximately
140 vph east of Johnwoods Street to approximately 200 vph west of Huntmar Drive.
In the afternoon peak hour volumes total approximately 60 vph west of Johnwoods Street
and range from approximately 260 vph east of Johnwoods Street to approximately 210 vph
west of Huntmar Drive.
The above peak hour traffic volumes suggest that Maple Grove Road is carrying average
two-way daily traffic volumes of approximately 550 vpd west of Johnwoods Street and
approximately 2000 vpd, two-way east of Johnwoods Street and approximately 2100 vpd
two-way west of Huntmar Drive.
Prior to opening of the Huntmar Drive Extension to traffic (February 2008) it is noteworthy
that Johnwoods Street carried morning and afternoon peak hour directional volumes within
the 200 to 300 vph range at Maple Grove Road which translates into average two way daily
volumes of approximately 2800 vpd. Current peak hour directional volumes on Johnwoods
Street immediately south of Maple Grove Road, following the opening of the Huntmar Drive
Extension, are within the 124 to 213 vph range implying daily volumes of approximately
1800 vpd.
These volumes suggest that so far there has been a reduction in Johnwoods Street traffic
volumes as a result of the completion of the Huntmar Drive Extension. As the opening of
the Huntmar Drive Extension is quite recent, the full impact is unlikely to be in place at this
early stage and consequently further reductions in total daily traffic volumes can be
expected.
3.0 PROJECTED DEVELOPMENT ON THE MAPLE GROVE ROAD CORRIDOR
As indicated on Figure 2, a number of subdivisions are either under construction or
proposed along the section of Maple Grove Road in question, west of Huntmar Drive. These
include Fairwinds South (Mattamy) now under construction, Fairwinds North (Mattamy),
under construction, Fairwinds West, not yet begun, Tartan, not yet begun, and a proposed
subdivision by Claridge, timing unknown.
The Jackson Trails Subdivision (Tartan) is also under construction west of Bryanston Gate,
which is an existing community of approximately 300 dwelling units. The projected buildout
of Jackson Trails is approximately 650 dwelling units.
Depicted in Table 1 are the approximate numbers of dwelling units proposed within the
subdivisions along Maple Grove Road along with the estimated morning and afternoon peak
hour traffic volumes anticipated to be generated at build-out of each subdivision.
Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
It is assumed that build-out of all these subdivisions will have occurred within the next 10
years, by approximately 2018, prior to the completion of the Kanata West Main Street, and
consequently the full development of all these subdivisions, in conjunction with the likely
maximum traffic diversion to Maple Grove Road, resulting from the potential intersection of
the Stittsville Main Street Extension with Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street along with
the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection remaining as is, will constitute the
likely maximum traffic volumes that can be anticipated on Maple Grove Road and thus
determine the scale of the right-of-way and cross-section that will adequately address the
future transportation service needs in the short/medium term.
The eventual completion of the Kanata West Main Street link from Jackson Trails to
Palladium Drive will undoubtedly reduce long-term traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road.
4.0 TRAFFIC INFLUENCES ON MAPLE GROVE ROAD WEST
As referred to earlier, there are a number of influences on the eventual traffic volumes that
will utilize Maple Grove Road that have to be addressed in this report.
These include the potential Stittsville Main Street link to Maple Grove Road west of Alon
Street, the possible closure of Johnwoods Street at Maple Grove Road, and the impact of the
planned subdivisions along Maple Grove Road that are to be developed by Mattamy, Tartan
and Claridge. These individual impacts are addressed as follows.
4.1 Stittsville Main Street Extension to a T-Intersection with Maple Grove Road
The Jackson Trails development which is primarily serviced, from a transportation
perspective, by the extension of Stittsville Main Street from its current intersection with
Hazeldean Road to a potential intersection with the Maple Grove Road unopened road
allowance west of the Maple Grove Road/Alon Street intersection, when built-out over the
next few years is projected to generate total daily traffic volumes of approximately 5400
vpd, 2700 vpd in and 2700 vpd out of the community.
If the Stittsville Main Street were connected to Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street by the
time of build-out (2010), it is reasonable to assume that Maple Grove Road would be
attractive to a considerable proportion of the subdivision’s daily generated traffic of 5400
vpd. As a route to/from the east this is likely to occur to a considerable extent as a result of
the traffic congestion built-up on Hazeldean Road due to on-going development and
6
Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
eventual future construction over the next several years, while Maple Grove Road will have
local improvements and upgrades due to the implementation of new access arrangements
that will be carried out by the developers in question.
On the assumption that between 20% and 40% of the Jackson Trails daily residential traffic
would be attracted to the Maple Grove Road Corridor, and that the connecting link would
also attract a small portion (±10%) of the daily traffic flow between Stittsville and the City
of Ottawa to/from the east, the daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road depicted on
Figure 4 are estimated to occur.
Figure 4: Projected Daily Traffic Impact on Maple Grove Road Corridor Resulting
from Stittsville Main Street Extension Intersection with Maple Grove Road
On the other hand, it is noteworthy that were the Stittsville Main Street not extended to
intersect with Maple Grove Road west of Alon Street, the following would be the expected
repercussions:
a. All Jackson Trails traffic would be confined to the Hazeldean Road Corridor to
some extent, which is experiencing increasing congestion with no relief in sight
for several years;
b. Potential diversion of Jackson Trails traffic to Johnwoods Street with resultant
added pressure to close the Maple Grove/Johnwoods Street intersection, which,
as will be seen later, is not recommended;
c. Potential diversion of Jackson Trails traffic to Johnwoods Street south and the
proposed east-west minor collector, linking Johnwoods Street with the Huntmar
7
Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
Drive Extension with subsequent “through” traffic issues for the Fairwinds West,
Tartan and Fairwinds South subdivisions;
d. Possible impact on the future transit service in the area, although the Stittsville
Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection could be limited to transit vehicles
only.
In view of the above, this report recommends, and assumes, the completion of the
Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection for all traffic.
4.2 Potential Closure of Johnwoods Street Link to Maple Grove Road
As depicted on Figure 3, Johnwoods Street currently carries two way peak hour traffic
volumes totalling approximately 125 vph to 215 vph (morning and afternoon respectively)
at its north end where it intersects with Maple Grove Road.
These peak hour traffic volumes translate into average daily totals of approximately 1700
vpd, the majority of which transfers to/from Maple Grove Road east of Johnwoods Street.
Based on the current pattern of turning traffic at the Maple Grove/Johnwoods intersection, it
is estimated that were this intersection to be closed, there would be a considerable
reduction in the amount of daily traffic on Maple Grove Road to the east. Closure would of
course not result in the removal of 100% of the current traffic to/from Maple Grove Road
east as it is likely that some traffic would divert to Alon Street from Johnwoods Street in
order to get to the Maple Grove Road corridor and eventually more would likely transfer to
the future collector road proposed to link Johnwoods Street through the future Fairwinds
East, Tartan and Fairwinds South subdivisions, to Huntmar Drive, which is the more likely
longer-term consequence of the intersection closure. Traffic is also likely to transfer to the
Johnwoods Street/Hazeldean Road intersection resulting in additional traffic on Hazeldean
Road, which until it is widened to four lanes, has very limited capacity for additional traffic
east of Bryanston Gate.
Nevertheless, the closure of the existing Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection is
assumed to result in a reduction of up to 90% in the daily volume of traffic to/from Maple
Grove Road east, i.e., a daily reduction of approximately 1400 vpd, two-way as depicted on
Figure 5. Between Alon Street and Johnwoods Street, a daily increase of 300 vpd is
anticipated.
It is noteworthy that traffic volumes on Johnwoods Street have begun to reduce with the
completion of the Huntmar Drive Extension. Other measures such as the completion of the
Stittsville Main Street Extension and the Kanata West Main Street are also likely to further
reduce the use of Johnwoods Street by non-local traffic. The closure of the Johnwoods
Street/Maple Grove Road intersection would therefore create considerable inconvenience for
Bryanston Gate residents for a declining benefit over time.
Figure 5: Projected Daily Traffic Impact on Maple Grove Road Corridor Resulting
from Closure of Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road Intersection
4.3 Impact of Proposed Subdivision
a. Fairwinds West (Mattamy)
The proposed Fairwinds West Subdivision will be developed south of Maple Grove Road and
immediately to the east of the existing Bryanston Gate community.
Accesses are proposed to existing Johnwoods Street by way of a minor collector road
centrally located that will link the Bryanston Gate community with the three subdivisions
proposed to the east, Fairwinds West, Tartan, Fairwinds South, and extending to the
Huntmar Drive Extension. There is also a local road connection planned approximately halfway
between the above-mentioned minor collector and Maple Grove Road.
Of the total estimated daily traffic generated by this 329 unit subdivision, 1800 vpd, (196
singles and 133 townhomes), it is estimated that approximately 50% would utilize the
Maple Grove Road Corridor either by way of Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road (if it
remains open) or by way of the proposed single intersection to be located approximately
200m east of Johnwoods Street.
Consequently, this subdivision is projected to add a total daily volume of approximately 900
vpd to the Maple Grove Road Corridor with 95% assumed to be to/from the east and 5%
to/from the west. Depicted on Figure 6 is the anticipated distribution of Fairwinds West
traffic on Maple Grove Road at build-out.
Figure 6: Projected Daily Traffic Impact of Fairwinds West Subdivision on Maple
Grove Road Corridor
b. Tartan Subdivision
The proposed Tartan subdivision will be developed south of Maple Grove Road sandwiched
between the Mattamy Fairwinds West and Fairwinds South subdivisions. It will be linked to
both of the adjoining subdivisions by way of a collector road bisecting all three subdivisions,
parallel to Maple Grove Road linking Johnwoods Street with the Huntmar Drive Extension.
From the northern part of the subdivision, two accesses to Maple Grove Road are proposed.
It is assumed that 50% of the total daily traffic generated by this subdivision will access
Maple Grove Road with the remaining 50% utilizing the collector road to either the east or
west.
Consequently, of the estimated total daily traffic generated by this subdivision of
approximately 2300 vpd, approximately 1150 vpd are projected to use Maple Grove Road
with 95% to/from the east, i.e., approximately 1100 vpd and 50 vpd to/from the west.
The resultant distribution of daily traffic to/from the Tartan subdivision is depicted on Figure
7.
Figure 7: Projected Daily Traffic Impact of Tartan Subdivision on Maple Grove
Road Corridor
c. Fairwinds North Subdivision (Mattamy)
The proposed Fairwinds North subdivision will be developed by Mattamy north of Maple
Grove Road and immediately west of Huntmar Drive.
At least three (3) accesses to Maple Grove Road are proposed and all traffic generated by
this subdivision will impact Maple Grove Road between Huntmar Drive and Johnwoods
Street.
The Fairwinds North Subdivision is projected to generate a total daily traffic volume of
approximately 2550 vph. Based on a directional split of 95% to/from the east, and 5%
to/from the west, results in the addition of approximately 1200 vph per direction to/from
Maple Grove Road west of Huntmar Drive and approximately 75 vph per direction to/from
Maple Grove Road east of Johnwoods Street.
Figure 8: Projected Daily Traffic Impact of Fairwinds North (Mattamy) Subdivision
on Maple Grove Road Corridor
d. Fairwinds South (west of Huntmar Drive)
The Fairwinds South subdivision containing a total of approximately 755 dwelling units will
primarily impact Maple Grove Road to the east of Huntmar Drive. A minor impact on Maple
Grove Road west of Huntmar Drive can be expected by the small amount to townhomes and
singles that will have direct access to/from Maple Grove Road immediately west of Huntmar
Drive and by the small proportion of the remainder of the subdivision’s daily traffic
generation that will utilize Maple Grove Road to/from the west.
Based on the assumption that 50% of the total daily traffic to/from Fairwinds South will
impact the Huntmar/Maple Grove Road network, would result in a total daily traffic volume
of approximately 2300 vpd to/from the Maple Grove Road/Huntmar Drive corridor. On the
basis that 95% will only impact Huntmar Drive north/Maple Grove Road east of Huntmar
Drive with the remaining 5% to/from Maple Grove Road west results in a potential daily
additional impact of approximately 120 vph, i.e., 60 vpd each way east of Johnwoods
Street. Additional traffic to/from the east will impact Maple Grove Rod immediately west of
Huntmar Drive and is estimated at 100 vpd per direction.
The estimated impact of the Fairwinds South subdivision on Maple Grove Road west of
Huntmar Drive is depicted on Figure 9.
Figure 9: Projected Daily Traffic Impact of Fairwinds South (Mattamy) Subdivision
on Maple Grove Road Corridor
e. Claridge Subdivision
The proposed Claridge Subdivision is located on the north side of Maple Grove Road and
west of Fairwinds North and north of Fairwinds West and Bryanston Gate. As no details are
available at this time, it is estimated that it will contain approximately 250 dwelling units
(based on relative area) and will have two accesses to/from Maple Grove Road, one
opposite Johnwoods Street and one opposite Alon Street.
The assumed approximate 250 dwelling units are estimated to generate a daily two-way
traffic total of approximately 1700 vpd.
Based on an assumed 5% to the west, 10% to the south (Johnwoods Street) and 85% to
the east (Maple Grove Road) would result in the addition of approximately 90 vpd to Maple
Grove Road west of Alon Street and approximately 1450 vpd to/from Maple Grove Road
east of Johnwoods Street
If the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection is closed, the result is a maximum
impact on Maple Grove Road east of Johnwoods Street of an additional 1600 vpd two-way
with approximately 800 vph two-way added to Maple Grove Road between Alon Street and
Johnwoods Street. This would be the maximum impact on Maple Grove Road east of
Johnwoods Street, as if the Johnwoods Street intersection is to remain opened, it is logical
to assume that a portion of the Claridge subdivision traffic will utilize Johnwoods Street
to/from the Hazeldean Road Corridor.
The estimated impact of the Claridge Subdivision on Maple Grove Road is depicted on Figure
10.
Road Corridor
4.4 Background Traffic Growth
As depicted on Figure 3, the Maple Grove Road Corridor currently carries average two-way
daily traffic volumes estimated as follows:
• West of Johnwoods Street (Johnwoods to Alon) 550 vpd
• East of Johnwoods Street 2000 vpd
• West of Huntmar Drive 2100 vpd
These current daily traffic volumes reflect the recent opening of the Huntmar Drive
Extension to traffic, the currently operating Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road
intersection and the non-opening of the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road
intersection, to traffic.
Were these conditions to continue as they currently are, it is reasonable to assume that the
current background traffic on Maple Grove Road depicted on Figure 3 would continue to
grow annually as development along Hazeldean Road west of Bryanston Gate and other
developments in Kanata West and Stittsville, not specifically accounted for in this report are
implemented.
It is therefore reasonable to apply a background traffic growth figure to the current traffic
on Maple Grove Road to account for the additional impact of other development. Previous
studies have assumed an annual growth of 4% per annum but since the majority of the
proposed developments along Maple Grove Road are specifically addressed in this report, an
annual growth rate of +2% is considered more appropriate. The resultant background
traffic volumes by 2018 are depicted on Figure 11.
14
Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
It is noteworthy that if the Stittsville Main Street Extension were not connected to Maple
Grove Road, and/or the Johnwoods Street intersection were closed to traffic at Maple Grove
Road, a background traffic growth rate considerably less that +4% per annum would most
likely apply to the Maple Grove Road corridor in the future, based on the absence of
connecting links to/from the west (Stittsville Main Street and possibly Johnwoods Street).
Consequently, the projected background traffic volumes depicted on Figure 11 can be
assumed to be the most likely maximum background daily traffic.
Figure 11: Projected Maximum Background Daily Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove
Road Corridor by Horizon Year: 2018
4.5 Projected Horizon Year Total Traffic Volumes (2018)
The projected daily traffic volumes from all the proposed subdivisions along Maple Grove
Road (Figures 6 to 10) have then been added to the projected maximum background traffic
volumes at the horizon year, 2018, as depicted on Figure 11 and these are depicted on
Figure 12, reflecting the worst-case scenario of retaining the Johnwoods/Maple Grove
intersection as is, and completing the Stittsville Main Street Extension/Maple Grove Road
link.
Traffic is maximized on Maple Grove Road with the completion of the Stittsville Main Street
link to Maple Grove Road and the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection
remaining open as is depicted on Figure 12. Were the Johnwoods/Maple Grove Road
intersection to be closed, there would be estimated increase in traffic on Maple Grove Road
between Alon Street and Johnwoods Street of approximately 300 vpd.
4.6 Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations
1. The recent (February 2008) completion of the Huntmar Drive Extension linking Maple
Grove Road with Hazeldean Road at Iber Road has resulted in a reduction in daily
traffic volumes on Johnwoods Street and on Maple Grove Road between Bryanston
Gate and Huntmar Drive.
2. Before the completion of the Huntmar Drive Extension, it was estimated that
Johnwoods Street was carrying approximately 2800 vpd at its northern end (Maple
Grove Road), and that this daily traffic volume was composed of approximately 2000
vpd “through” traffic and 800 vpd, “local” traffic generated by the Bryanston Gate
Community of approximately 300 dwelling units.
3. Recent traffic counts (March 2008) at intersections along Maple Grove Road indicate
that Johnwoods Street is now carrying approximately 1800 vpd at its northern end
and Maple Grove Road is carrying approximately 550 vpd between Alon Street and
Johnwoods Street and from 2000 to 2100 vpd between Johnwoods Street and
Huntmar Drive.
4. Assuming that the “local” (Bryanston Gate) component of daily traffic on Johnwoods
Street north is the same as before (800 vpd), it would appear that the opening of the
Huntmar Drive Extension may have reduced the “through” daily traffic on Johnwoods
Street by approximately 1000 vpd, a reduction of approximately 50%.
16
Estimated Traffic Volumes on Maple Grove Road
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Huntmar Drive: 2018 April 2008
5. Since the Huntmar Drive Extension has only been completed recently, its full benefit
to Bryanston Gate may not yet be in place and further reductions in “through” traffic
can be anticipated.
6. The closure of Johnwoods Street at its northern end is estimated, based on recent
traffic counts, to result in the addition of approximately 300 vpd two-way to Maple
Grove Road between Alon Street and Johnwoods Street and a reduction of
approximately 1400 vpd, two-way on Maple Grove Road between Johnwoods Street
and Huntmar Drive.
7. In view of the already considerable reduction in “through” traffic on Johnwoods
Street resulting from the opening of the Huntmar Drive Extension and the likelihood
of increased traffic volumes on Alon Street and Maple Grove Road between Alon
Street and Johnwoods Street, and eventually on the collector road to be constructed
linking Johnwoods Street with the Huntmar Drive Extension serving the future
Fairwinds West (Mattamy), Tartan, and Fairwinds South (Mattamy) subdivisions,
coupled with the addition of traffic to the already congested Hazeldean Road
Corridor, and the resulting inconvenience to residents of Bryanston Gate that would
result, it is recommended that the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road not be
closed.
8. With the current road network remaining as is, it is estimated that future daily
background traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road would increase at an annual rate of
2%, reflecting the ongoing growth of Stittsville and Kanata West, not specific to the
residential developments along Maple Grove Road.
9. The proposed completion of the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection
is estimated to result in the addition of approximately 2200 to 3250 vpd to the Maple
Grove Road corridor, traffic generated to/from Jackson Trails and Stittsville.
10. While not completing the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road intersection for all
traffic would reduce the projected traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road by 2200 to
3250 vpd, its likely consequences would be as follows:
• increased daily traffic on Hazeldean Road with exacerbated congestion until
the four-laning is completed, several years from now;
• potential for increased traffic on Johnwoods Street adding pressure for the
closure of the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection, not
recommended in this report; and
• potential for increased “through” traffic on the proposed minor collector road
linking Johnwoods Street with the Huntmar Drive Extension within the
Fairwinds West, Tartan and Fairwinds South communities; and
• possible implications for future transit service in the area although the
intersection could be completed for transit use only.
11. The five (5) known residential subdivision that are proposed along Maple Grove Road
between Alon Street and Huntmar Drive are estimated to generate a total two-way
traffic volume of approximately 8500 vpd, the majority of which will impact Maple
Grove Road west of Huntmar Drive.
12. Based on the assumed completion of the Stittsville Main Street/Maple Grove Road
intersection, the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection remains open, the
construction of the proposed collector road linking Johnwoods Street with the
Huntmar Drive Extension and the development of the proposed five residential
subdivisions, the projected maximum two-way daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove
Road are estimated to be as follows, by 2018:
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Alon Street: approximately 2450 to 3500 vpd
Alon Street to Johnwoods Street:
approximately 3600 to 4700 vpd
East of Johnwoods Street to Huntmar: approximately 6450/7550 vpd
West of Huntmar Drive:
approximately 10,800/12,000 vpd
13. Were the Johnwoods Street/Maple Grove Road intersection to be closed, the
following are the estimated daily two-way traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road by
2018:
Stittsville Main Street Extension to Alon Street: approximately 2500 to 3600 vpd
Alon Street to Johnwoods Street:
approximately 3900 to 5000 vpd
East of Johnwoods Street to Huntmar: approximately 5100/6100 vpd
West of Huntmar Drive:
approximately 9400 to 10,500 vpd
14. The estimated maximum two-way daily traffic volume on Maple Grove Road will
occur immediately west of Huntmar Drive and is estimated at approximately 12,000
vpd. This translates into a peak hour directional volume within the 600-700 vph
range.
Consequently, Maple Grove Road can be designed as a major collector road within a
24m right-of-way with 11 to 12 metres of pavement and potential for parking on at
least one side. With the 11-12 metres of pavement, left-turn lanes can be provided
at all intersections and transit routes can be accommodated.
15. The recommended 24m right-of-way should apply along Maple Grove Road at least
as far west as Johnwoods Street.
As the bulk of the daily traffic generated by the proposed subdivisions is to/from the
east, there will be a steady decline in daily traffic volumes from east to west along
Maple Grove Road.
As there will be a substantial decline in daily traffic west of Alon Street, the future
cross-section of Maple Grove Road could be decreased west of Johnwoods Street. A
right-of-way in the 22m-24m wide range, with 11m pavement width could suffice.
16. The projected daily traffic volumes on Maple Grove Road by 2018 are considered to
represent likely maximum conditions as the eventual construction of the proposed
Kanata West Main Street, linking the Stittsville Main Street Extension with the North-
South Arterial will likely reduce future traffic volumes considerably when it is
implemented.
