Issue 26
13 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT
The XL/FXL/AL/SL/RX Ranges of Terminal Boxes and Control Boxes use an enclosure that is
certified as an increased safety component under Certificate Number Sira 00ATEX3027U. These
enclosures can be manufactured from either stainless steel, mild steel or aluminium sheet (the RX
Terminal Boxes are only manufactured from stainless steel). Sealing between the lid/body and
glandplate/body interfaces is achieved with a 5 mm one piece closed cell Neoprene or Silicone gasket.
The enclosures may be used in an ambient temperature range of –40°C to +85°C when fitted with a
Neoprene gasket or –50°C to +120°C when fitted with a Silicone gasket, however, there is the option
to replace the main enclosure earth connection; this arrangement is limited to an ambient temperature
range of -40°C to 120°C.
The XL range of enclosures are provided with a hinged cover and are either designated XLM when
manufactured from mild steel or XLS when manufactured from stainless steel. The larger sizes can be
provided with gland plates. The use of a gasket on the lid and gland plates provides the size XL*1 to
XL*10D enclosures with ingress protection ratings of IP66, IP67 and IP68. The XL*11 enclosures have
an ingress protection rating of IP54 and are not be used for Terminal Boxes and Control Boxes
intended for dust applications. The FXL enclosures are similar to the XL enclosures having a different
sealing arrangement of the cover and the RX enclosures are also similar to the XL enclosures, although
are only provided in stainless steel.
The SL range of enclosures are provided with a bolt on cover and are designated either SLM when
manufactured from mild steel or SLS when manufactured from stainless steel or AL when
manufactured from aluminium. There is no provision for gland plates and the walls are provided with
plain holes for cable entries.
A variety of electrical devices are then fitted in these enclosures to form the XL/FXL/ SL/AL Ranges of
Terminal Boxes and Control Boxes, these include:
• Increased safety terminals selected in accordance with condition of certification clause 17.3 (the
RX range of terminal boxes only uses increased safety terminals and is not fitted with any of the
following items).
• The ‘MFT’ type terminals manufactured by Pepperl+Fuchs and certified under PTB 07ATEX1004U.
• Busbar certified to DEMKO 03 ATEX 136028 U.
• Ammeter certified to Sira 02ATEX3380U.
• Indicator Lamp certified to Sira 04ATEX5056U.
• Contact Block certified to Sira 03ATEX1269U.
• Control Components certified to PTB 97ATEX1068U.
• Control Components certified to PTB 98ATEX1010U.
• Temperature Transmitters certified to Baseefa08ATEX0030X.
• Plugs/Sockets certified to LCIE 99 ATEX 6027 X.
• Plugs/Sockets certified to LCIE 00 ATEX 6010 X.
• Plugs/Sockets certified to LCIE 02 ATEX 6029 X.
The dissipated power in Watts for the enclosure is to be calculated in accordance with
EN 60079-7:2007, Annex E, the table below contains the maximum dissipated power ratings for each
SCHEDULE
EC TYPE-EXAMINATION CERTIFICATE
Sira 99ATEX3199
Issue 26
17 CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATION
17.1 The use of this certificate is subject to the Regulations Applicable to Holders of Sira Certificates.
17.2 Holders of EC type-examination certificates are required to comply with the production control
requirements defined in Article 8 of directive 94/9/EC.
17.3 This certificate does not cover terminals that may be fitted to the enclosure. Any terminals that are
fitted shall be suitably certified by a notified body and installed in accordance with their certification
requirements.
17.4 The products covered by this certificate incorporate previously certified devices, it is therefore the
responsibility of the manufacturer to continually monitor the status of the certification associated with
these devices, and the manufacturer shall inform Sira of any modifications of the devices that may
impinge upon the explosion safety design of their products. In addition, when a previously certified
device is fitted in a Junction Box/Control Box, the marking of the final product shall be determined
taking into account the marking and any limiting special conditions for safe use associated with the
previously certified device. The manufacturer shall also provide the user/installer with a copy of the
EC-Type Examination Certificate that is associated with these products and the instructions supplied
with the Junction Box/Control Box shall make reference to the special conditions for safe use and the
electrical parameters that are defined in these certificates.
17.5 When the Junction Box/Control Box is prewired, it shall be subjected to a routine electric strength test
carried out as follows, no breakdown shall occur:
An electrical strength test of 2U + 1000 V (where U is the supply voltage) with a minimum of
1500 V ac, shall be applied between each terminal way and earth, and between adjacent terminal ways
for at least 60 seconds and no more than 63 seconds as required by clause 7.1 (a) of EN 60079-7:
2007.
Alternatively, an electrical strength test of 1.2 x the above test voltage shall be applied as above, for at
least 3 seconds and no more than 5 seconds as required by clause 7.1(b) of EN 60079-7: 2007.
17.6 When a junction box is manufactured to an intermediate size that is not recognised as a standard size
in the tables associated with this certification, then any given dimension shall not be larger than the
respective dimension of the largest enclosure or smaller than the respective dimension of the smallest
enclosure. The power rating applied to a junction box of intermediate size shall be that of the next
smallest enclosure.
17.7 Terminals for T5 temperature classifications shall be suitable for 120°C, terminals for T4 temperature
classifications shall be suitable for 145°C, terminals for T3 temperature classifications shall be suitable
for 180°C.
17.8 When the optional main earth connection is used as per drawing number XL/NB/503, the first nut on
the opposite side of the enclosure to the seal shall be tightened onto a clean dry surface to provide a
good enclosure earth contact and an IP66/67 seal.
17.9 The type XL*11, FXL*11, XL*11, FXL*11D, XL*11 and FXL*11S enclosures have been afforded an
ingress protection level IP54 and therefore they shall not bear any dust markings, in addition, they
shall not display a rating other than IP54.
This certificate and its schedules may only be
reproduced in its entirety and without change.
