practitioners and cooperate with other health professionals to promote health for the
individual, the public and the global community.
o The natural health-care practitioner shall strive to exemplify personal well-being,
ethical character and trustworthiness as a health care professional.
PROFESSIONAL CODE OF CONDUCT
This is the code of conduct for all members of the Bastyr University community. Please see the
University Catalogue and Student Handbook for further information regarding our code of conduct.
The privilege of working in the Bastyr University Clinic Program requires full compliance with all
clinic policies and procedures. Loss of privileges, specified disciplinary actions, or separation from
Bastyr University may be imposed on any University member whose conduct on or off campus
adversely affects the Bastyr University community, in particular when it includes blatant disregard for
the welfare of others.
Fundamental types of misconduct that may lead to suspension or dismissal include:
o Physical and/or verbal abuse, intimidation, or harassment of another person or group.
o Racist and/or derogatory remarks and/or behavior towards another person or group.
o Deliberate or careless endangerment, tampering with safety alarms or equipment,
violation of specific safety regulations, and/or failure to render reasonable
cooperation in an emergency.
o Obstruction or forcible disruptions of regular Bastyr University activities, including
teaching, research, administration, clinic services, discipline, organized events, and
the operation and maintenance of facilities.
o Interference with the free speech and movement of any academic and/or community
members.
o Dishonesty, including provision of false information, alteration or misuse of
documents.
o Plagiarism and/or other academic cheating, impersonation, misrepresentation, or
fraud.
o Theft, abuse of, or unauthorized use of personal or Bastyr University property.
o Use of illicit drugs or being on the premises in a drug or alcohol-intoxicated state.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST
While at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, a Bastyr University external shift site, or an approved
preceptor shift, the intern clinician’s scope of practice is limited to the scope of practice of his or her
supervisor and shift. An intern clinician may not exceed the scope of practice of the supervising
clinician nor the scope of practice provided as care on the shift.
Note: Students may not refer a patient to their private practice in another licensed profession. This
constitutes a conflict of interest and will result in disciplinary action, jeopardizing the student’s status
in their degree program, up to and including dismissal from the university.
