ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT & DESIGN Enclosure Furniture Getting a handle on enclosure furniture We take a look at recent developments in enclosure furniture, including handles, locks and hinges What distinguishes an enclosure from a box? Well, in many respects it is the furniture that adorns it. In no small part, it is this that defines the level of functionality the enclosure will offer. In addition, furniture options play a key role in customising the enclosure to meet specific user requirements. So what is new in the world of enclosure furniture? Camlock Systems has introduced an extension of its popular wing knob, T handle and L handle ranges. The new products, designated Series 08 are fitted with a lock cylinder that is compatible with all 92 Series key combinations, including the popular 92369 key number. Camlock Systems has manufactured its new products in response to demand from the cabinet and enclosure industry. Camlock’s new 5 disc tumbler ‘08’ lock barrel provides a moderate level of security and is available keyed alike or keyed to differ. A wide range of steel, stainless steel and polyamide cams is offered. Where no locking operation is required, the handle can be specified without a lock cylinder. All products have passed salt spray water and other environmental tests and are perfectly suitable for applications that are sited in damp environments such as in the water industry. The wing knob and T handle are IP65 rated and fitted with a rubber gasket. A stainless steel cap and spring loaded shutter protect the keyway. Sales director Tony Dent says: “With the Series 08 we are responding to a huge market demand. We have created an ideal solution for the industry by fitting our quality locks with 92 Series compatible barrels to complement the existing range of wing knobs and handles.” On the subject of handles, Rittal offers the Comfort Handle for its TS8 freestanding enclosures, available in pushbutton, padlocking and keylocking configurations. The handles are designed to optimise installed equipment because the folding action means the handle does not take up any of the swivel area. The handles are prepared for the installation of lock inserts, safety inserts and push button inserts. Thumb turns and L handles in keylocking and padlocking configurations are also available for Rittal’s JB junction boxes and WM wall mount enclosures. For its part, Albert Jagger recently introduced the Industrilas integrated hardware to its range. Products such as the System VISION IP rated swing handles can be used independently or in conjunction with the Industrilas range of rod locks and three-point locking systems. Further products include the System KLIMA-FLEX range of handles, latches and hinges for use on insulated doors in climate control and HVAC applications. Manufactured from polyamide, die-cast zinc and stainless steel, these modular components offer single or multi-point latches with cams, roller cams and rod latches. Hammond Electronics has added a further 24 variants to its extensive range, which are designed to complement enclosures, subracks, chassis, drawers and panels used in the electronic, networking, broadcasting and electrical markets. All styles of handle have pleasing modern lines that will enhance any enclosure or subrack to which they are fitted. The handles family consists of six main types: round steel bar, styled plastic and 16
aluminium, plastic, square and oval aluminium, flexible vinyl carry and liftup. The handles are available in a choice of finishes to complement or contrast with the equipment to which they are fitted: depending on the material and style, they are available in chrome plate, black plasticised coating, natural anodised or black anodised. Many types are sized for use on the front of panels or subracks from 1U to 8U high. For mounting on the sides of enclosures, the heavy-duty lift-up designs are rated at up to 150kg per pair. Each family offers a particular combination of strength and aesthetics. The new Program 1000 padlockable stainless steel L handles from EMKA offer strength in security with style and simplicity. Both are designed to suit rugged outdoor applications such as rail-side cabinets or street furniture, but take a radically different approach to this in terms of design and functionality. The U842 L handle is smoothly styled with IP65 sealing and incorporates a padlocking facility on the shaft next to the bezel where the padlock can hang behind the handle itself. Its companion, the U857, on the other hand, incorporates a hoop and staple type of design which bridges across the cabinet door and its frame – so integrating the handle into this extra level of security. The material is AISI 316 stainless but a black powder coated version of the hoop/staple U842 is also available in steel – reference U857. A further option is the P2 Flush Pull Lockable from Southco which combines the reliability and fast installation of the standard P2 product class with the added security of an integrated cam lock. This one-piece assembly features single-hole panel preparation and builtin tabs that snap into position behind the panel to hold the pull in place without added tools, reducing installation time and effort. The addition of an integrated Southco lockplug brings added security to panels, doors, furniture and various enclosure applications. Available in both left and right hand locking styles, the P2 Flush Pull Lockable is also available with custom keying upon request.
