WHAT’S NEW IN THE 2009<br />

NATIONWIDE INPATIENT SAMPLE (<strong>NIS</strong>)?<br />

• The 2009 <strong>NIS</strong> contains two additional states: New Mexico and Montana.<br />

• The following data elements were added <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Core File beginning with <strong>the</strong> 2009<br />

<strong>NIS</strong>:<br />

o Ten additional secondary diagnoses for a <strong>to</strong>tal of 25 diagnoses<br />

Ten additional secondary Clinical Classifications Software (CCS)<br />

diagnosis categories<br />

Major Diagnosic Category (MDC) in use on discharge date, calculated<br />

without Present on Admission (POA) indica<strong>to</strong>rs (MDC_NoPOA).<br />

MDC_NoPOA and <strong>the</strong> Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) calculated without<br />

POA indica<strong>to</strong>rs (DRG_NoPOA) are useful because <strong>the</strong> lack of POA flags<br />

from many states prevents <strong>the</strong> assignment of <strong>the</strong> standard MDC and<br />

DRG for a few DRGs involving Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC).<br />

• The following data elements were added <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diagnosis and Procedure Groups<br />

(DX_PR_GRPS) File beginning with <strong>the</strong> 2009 <strong>NIS</strong>:<br />

o Multi-level CCS categories for <strong>the</strong> principal diagnosis and <strong>the</strong> first listed<br />

E-code and procedure.<br />

Ten additional Chronic Condition Indica<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

Ten additional Chronic Condition Body System Indica<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

• Georgia and Illinois provide race/ethnicity data for <strong>the</strong> first time for data year 2009.<br />

In addition, Iowa improved <strong>the</strong>ir race/ethnicity data in 2009 by capturing information<br />

about <strong>the</strong> Hispanic population.<br />

• The 2009 <strong>NIS</strong> is distributed on a single DVD-ROM instead of two CD-ROMs.<br />
