Sleeping Beauty
at the Everyman
Wow what an amazing evening at the Everyman Theatre last night there was a buzz in Matchams
before the curtain raised with some words from Geoffrey Rowe the Everyman Chairman and Martin
Horwood MP spoke about amazing charity James Hopkins Trust. Then the craziness begun there
was some loud mutterings from some man dragging a clothes iron across the floor....it's Tweedy
shouted the children you went into hysterics.
Then the show started and rattled off at 100 miles an hour and didn't look back the story started off
with the baby princesses Christening and the many gifts, until evil Fairy Hysteria cursed Princess
Aurora that on her 18th birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. All was not lost
thou as Fairy Snow the kind fairy was able to change the death sentence to 100 years sleep.
I don't want to give to much of the story away if you haven't seen Sleeping Beauty at Everyman as it
does stay fairly true to the original Brothers Grimm book but also does go off on some funny
tangents. The shining lights of the play was Tweedy and William Elliott who plays Nanny Nice Hands
as it looked like they were having a riot as at several times they were both in fits of laughter.
The key to the story is when Princess Aurora was a baby, had her name changed to Briar Rose after
she was cursed to protect her from Fairy Hysteria and even Brior Rose herself didn't know her true
identity. The fight between good and evil fairies was good fun too with Joanne Heywood who played
evil Fairy Hysteria really revelling in her role and winding up the Cheltenham crowd...Oh no she
didn't...Oh Yes she did !! You get the idea.
Phil Clark's direction was brilliant with both the music and choreographer well drilled and very
professional, the songs were a mixture of old and current and were song with real verve by all the
cast.
Sleeping Beauty a Review from Darcey Gobey-Taylor (7 years old)
4
I really liked Sleeping Beauty as Tweedy is a bit crazy but he made me laugh, the music was really
good and I liked singing along. My favourite bit was when Tweedy was messing about trying to put his
hat on and kept dropping it as he ran off the stage.
I really liked the bit when they sang Let it Go out of Frozen as most of my friends really like that, I am
telling my friends to come and watch Sleeping Beauty.
Swan Lake
Ballet
at the Everyman
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some ballet included, whether it is on the television or in
the Theatre, the best place to watch was our very own Everyman Theatre.
Presented by The Russian State Ballet and Opera House, myself and my best friend were invited to
watch this impressive cast perform Swan Lake. Along with a live Orchestra this ballet was elegantly
flawless.
The story of Swan Lake tells a tale of Odette a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. In Act
1 we met the Prince who is celebrating his birthday with friends and peasants, this is interrupted by
the Queen. She wants her son married and he must be chose the bride at a ball the following
evening. Upset he cannot marry for love he travels into the forest to hunt.
Act 2 at the lake the prince is surrounded by swans and he notices a beautiful swan transform in a
maiden Odette. She tells the tale of her curse to the prince and then Von Rothbart the evil sorcerer
appears. The prince wants to kill him, but he cannot as in doing so the spell will never been undone.
Odette and the prince fall in love but as dawn arrives the spell draws Odette into a swan again.
Act 3 is the Princes Ball where six princesses are presented to the prince, however Rothbart arrives
in a disguise with his enchantress daughter Odile. She is identical to Odette and the prince is drawn
into their evil plan. Only having eyes for Odile, the prince notices Odette and realises his mistake and
grief-stricken he rushes to the lake.
Back at the lake, act 4 begins the final part of our story. Odette is distraught at the prince’s betrayal,
the other swans comfort her. As the prince arrives at the lake he makes a heartfelt and passionate
apology to Odette. She forgives him and they reaffirm their love. Rothbart then appears and
demands he marries Odile, but the prince refuses and sacrifices himself. This breaks Von Rothbarts
spell with all his powers being lost and he dies. The swan’s then watch the Prince and Odette
ascend to heaven together forever united in love.
This is a sad tale but told beautifully through Ballet. Next Christmas you must see the Everymans
offerings of ballet to get you into a traditional Christmas mood. How about the Nutcracker?
Still Rocking the Cotswolds
In June this year TokyoTattoo were chosen as one of the 75 companies in the
Cotswold that rocks! And boy don’t they!
I caught up with them again at Rock the Cotswold Creativity evening held at the
Wilson Gallery. Along different creative people the event was set up to promote the
area as a great place to network and show how creative they are.
Tokyo Tattoo displayed their creative talents and even offered free henna tattoos.
Although this was Adam Woodfarm’s first attempt at Hennas he certainly showcased
his unique talents and towards the end of the evening started to leave the traditional
henna designs and start some crazy retro game designs such as Pac Man and Tetris.
Although some attendees were still not convinced about Tattoos, many were drawn
in by the impressive Videos and chatting to the team.
'This is a great event and we are happy to support the cause. At ToykoTattoo we are
trying to break down the boundaries between modern art and tattoos.
The quote at the moment sounds like that what Rock the Cotswolds is trying to do
Stef Thomas
Five ways to kickstart your networking
in 2015
Do you get a lot of success from your business networking? Or
do you go along and are never sure how to make it "work" for
you?
Do you watch the people who are making networking work for
them and wonder what they do differently?
This month, Stefan Thomas, author of Business Networking for
Dummies gives us his ideas on five changes we can make whi
1. You have to be there, regularly. If you make only one change to your networking in 2015 the
do this. Plan your networking activity and be there. Don't think you can only turn up once or tw
a year when you need to make some sales. You're expecting people to want to buy when you
want to sell. Life doesn't work that way round.
Think about the furniture stores which advertise on telly. You know, the ones who have had a s
on since sometime in 1975! Why do you think they keep advertising week in week out? They
have to be there at the moment when you start thinking of buying new sofa.
They don't just pop up when they need to make some sales and neither should you. Be there
consistently. Then you will be there when someone in the room needs your product or service.
2. Arrive with positive intent. What are you intending to
get from this networking meeting? Are you
approaching the meeting positively? Or are you just
turning up and hoping for the best?
At the very least turn up with a smile and enjoy the
experience. I'm always amazed when people turn up to
networking meetings with a face like a smacked arse
and then wonder why everyone else responds in the
same manner.
www.uniquemediagroup.co.uk
3. Prepare. Most networking meetings have an introductions round - at 4Networking we
call it the 40 Second round. This is your opportunity to engage with the other people in the
room. Prepare it like you would any other marketing material. Write it down and, even
better, record it on your smartphone to make sure it is the right length and that it sounds
like you.
You wouldn't "wing it" with any of your other marketing material. Don't do it here.
20
4. ALWAYS follow up. What happens when you leave the networking meeting? You
check your 'phone. Wonder why you've got a missed call from your child's school,
wonder why your best client has Emailed you and realise you're now running late for
your next call.
In short, you start to forget the conversations you had. And everyone else is the same.
So you have the opportunity to be the one who stands out by always remembering to
follow up. Call the people you have met and arrange to have a second, longer
conversation with them. Don't wait for them to come to you.
n
ice
ale
5. Join up your networking with social media. You don't "get" Twitter or LinkedIn? Tough.
It's too late to pretend that social media isn't going to affect business. You have the
opportunity to be regularly in touch with your prospects on social media. You have the
opportunity to remind them of your expertise. You have the opportunity to be there at
exactly the moment when they realise they need your service.
The things is, your competitors have that opportunity too. You may be better at what you
do than your competitors. But they are better at keeping in touch on social media. Learn
how to use it properly. Find someone in your networking group who can help you. But
don't pretend you can do without it.
The world is joined up online now and the people who are truly benefitting are those who
realise that face to face relationships are even more important than ever. Those who join
up their real life and virtual relationships build the strongest connections and the most
mutually profitable networking.
CATHERINE
FROWD
PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTIST
I am a photographic artist, South African raised and living in
Cheltenham. My nomadic childhood gave me a passion for discovery,
and the desire to capture the essence of the world that I witness. It is a
feeling that runs deep in my creative process. The photograph becomes a
canvas to my artistic pursuits.
I am inspired by painters such as Egon Schiele, artists like Derek Jarman
and photographers like Nick Knight, but the thoughts behind my work
come from philosophers like Jean Baudrillard.
I have a broad range of clients, both artistic and commercial, that
allow me to utelise my style to create exciting branding whilst
maintaining my artistic vision.
My rich, dynamic style is achieved by harnessing a variety of medias
including painting, drawing, ice, cyanotypes and acetate prints, where
it is left to time and chance to create the image, as much as my own
and the subject’s experiences.
I am currently working closely with a number of different musicians,
artists, models and theatre groups, documenting in my unique style.
My recent work with Rogue Theatre has allowed me to capture the
wild spirit of live performance out in the woods, where I transform the
amazing experience into imagery.
I gained a First at University College Falmouth, run workshops on many
of my techniques and I have contributed to both group and solo
exhibitions as well as providing images for numerous publications. My
artwork can be seen in the permanent collection at Falmouth Art
16 Days of Action
Gloucestershire is taking a stand to promote healthy relationships and raise awareness of domestic abuse, sexual violence
and other related issues across 16 days of action. Between Tuesday 25th November ‘Elimination of Violence against Wome
and Girls International day’ and Wednesday 10th December ‘Human Rights’ day organisations, groups and communities rig
across the county are joining forces and taking action. Visit www.glostakeastand.com or search #glostakeastand for more
People from across the county will be joining forces for 16 days of action against domestic abuse and sexual violence at th
end of the month.
Those supporting the campaign will be asked to display a poster or wear a purple ribbon.
Tewkesbury Borough Council’s lead member for communities, councillor Sue Hillier Richardson, said: “We want it to be
clear that in Gloucestershire we are taking a stand to promote healthy relationships and raise awareness of domestic abuse
sexual violence and other related issues.
“Our 16 days of action campaign gives us a platform to do this and, in Tewkesbury Borough, we are proud to be working
with the Hollie Gazzard Trust on the first event that launches the campaign, which will take place at Innsworth Community
Centre on 25 November and where all members of the public are welcome.”
Nick Gazzard, chairman of the Hollie Gazzard Trust, said: “We are delighted to be opening the county 16 days of action at
Innsworth Community Centre.
“The Trust is totally committed to helping reduce the amount of Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence across our County an
take a zero tolerance approach to this.
“We believe a strategy of prevention and providing education on healthy relationships is crucial to the success of this
initiative. We would urge everybody to support the various activities and events that have been arranged and show your
support by wearing a purple ribbon.”
Hollie-day Hair
Gloscol students announce ‘Hollie-day Hair’, in association with the Hollie Gazzard Trust
26
Gloucestershire College students will be styling the city on Tuesday, 9th December with the recent announcement of
Gloscol’s ‘Hollie-day Hair’ event, in association with the Hollie Gazzard Trust. The talented Level 1 Hair & Beauty students
will spend the day styling hair of all lengths and shapes, welcoming anyone to join them - male and female.
The college have been working closely with the Hollie Gazzard Trust since her tragic death earlier this year, with the
charity providing financial support to aspiring hair & beauty students. The Gloucester Campus will be hosting the event,
where the students are offering curling, straightening, hair up, hair down, and temporary hair colour for a minimum
donation of £1. Locals are encouraged to spare a few moments of their time to make their way over to the campus
between 12-4pm.
n
ht The organisation of the event is a collaboration between the Level 1 Hair & Beauty students, Level 5 Salon Managers, and
Level 3 Marketing Apprentices. The project enables those involved to simultaneously gain experience for their courses and
e help a local cause. In addition to hair styling, there will be a raffle, face painting, and people with collection buckets
circulating the campus. All donations made will go towards the Hollie Gazzard Trust and the Gloucestershire Domestic
Abuse Support Service.
,
Level 5 Salon Manager, Sonia White has high expectations for the event, saying: “Our very talented Level 1 hairdressers
will be providing a range of hair services on the day. There will be refreshments, a raffle and more! We want this to be a
fun-filled afternoon and hope we can get as many people come along as possible to show their support and have a great
time.”
d
The Level 1 students echoed these comments: “We are extremely excited to be involved - supporting a cause that is close
to us all.” They will be helped by the Level 3 Marketing Apprentices who will be promoting through various channels -
online and offline - to drive as many people as possible towards the college on the day. Kaye Blakemore, describes it as
“An energetic collaboration between three different student groups”, adding that she is “looking forward to a positive
outcome for all.”
Upon arrival, there will be clear directions to the onsite salon - located at the main campus next to the Gloucester Docks.
Head over to show your support!
Winter Wonderland Dinner
Our first dinner was held at Hatherley Manor last Saturday
and it was a thoroughly entertaining evening and huge
success for the Trust. The evening involved a three
course dinner, auction, raffle, music by Tommy and the
Fuse, disco by Gary G, Jon Stanley Photography to
capture the evening and a casino. Each person all went
away with a complimentary HGT champagne flute. The
total raised amounted to £8,000 and every penny going
towards the Trust’s causes.
We would like to say a big thank you to all those who
donated prizes for the auction and raffle, and for Tommy
and the band, and Gary G for the fantastic music during
the evening, Cheri Amour for the chair covers, Lorna
Boon for the Sweets and Maxine for the wonderful
glasses. So many people have asked for it to be repeated
next year so we have booked 29 November 2015. We will
announce next year’s theme in the New Year and how you
can book your place.
We relocated from Malaysia to the UK early 2010. Currently live in Blakeney, Gloucestershire.
Why I Started The Business
My husband couldn’t work due to illness in early 2013 so I decided to find a job but no luck. I had
always dreamed of running my own business but I didn’t have a clue how to do it. I saw and advert
in the paper about a free taster of business start up course run by Forest of Dean Entrepreneurs, so I
went. From then on, I took level 1 (Dean Entrepreneurs) and 2 (Entrepreneurs Plus) to gain more
knowledge.
Why Bow Ties
Originally studied fashion design and started sewing at a very young age. Girls are spoilt for choice
when it comes to dressing up, for boys are quite limited. I looked around to find unique and fun
accessories for my son but very disappointing choice. So that’s when I started making bow ties.
There is a gap in the market for boys’ accessories so I decided to give it a go, make and sell bow
ties. My tutor and now friend, Miranda Jenkins suggested making bow ties for men as well so I did.
In July this year, I started selling my bow ties online through Etsy, online marketplace. Recently, I
have just started adding pocket square or handkerchief for men to the collection.
When the courses ended, Miranda suggested joining business club to get some support from local
businesses. I’m glad I did. I joined CAP business club through Paul James who runs it, in Coleford
and still a member today. Being self-employed was a complete new to me. Paul and CAP members
are very supportive. Lots of information, tips and advice I get from everybody which I really need
to keep moving forward and I have made some good friends along the way.
What’s Next
I’m focusing on online marketing at the moment, to be more specific with social media, to drive
traffic to my online shop. There is a lot to learn on how to do it but so far I’ve learned from
watching other successful business, managing their social media accounts. My online shop is
relatively new but my sales are steadily increasing. My customers were not just from UK but from
other countries as well like Norway, Ireland, Germany, Australia and United States.
Business and Family Life
Juggling business and family life is very hard but with the help, support and love from family and
friends, motivates me to be strong and never give up. I’m so lucky to have a wonderful and
understanding husband. I have a group of friends who always give me lots of encouragement to
keep me going.
CLAIMING VAT ON PRE-REGISTRATION EXPENDITURE
VAT is an administrative minefield for accountants, let alone business owners.
However a very important piece of favourable VAT legislation that all business owners should be
aware of is the entitlement to reclaim VAT on some of their expenditure made before they became
registered. Of course you must make sure that both the business and the entity are the same one that
made the original purchase (i.e. the business has not changed from a sole trade to a company).
There are different rules that apply however to the purchase of goods and the purchase of services.
VAT on the Purchase of Pre-Registration Goods
Businesses can reclaim VAT on the purchase of goods prior to registration providing that the goods
were purchased within the four years prior to the date of registration, and they fall within one of the
below categories:
1. The goods purchased will result in a sale/supply on which the business will be able to charge
VAT (i.e. the goods haven’t been used, sold or consumed at the date of registration). A good example
would be a builder who has a number of building materials in stock at the point of registering for VAT.
These materials in stock would be expected to be used on a future sale which will be charged VAT, an
therefore the original VAT on the purchase of the materials can be reclaimed.
2. VAT can also be reclaimed on goods which were purchased and used prior to registration, as
long as they continue to be used after registration to contribute in generating sales/supply on which
the business will be able to charge VAT. Examples of this would typically be capital assets such as
vans, plant/machinery, computer equipment, etc. Despite being used prior to the registration, you can
still recover 100% of the original VAT on the purchase.
VAT on the Purchase of Pre-Registration Services
It is extremely difficult to be able to prove whether a service paid for prior to registration has resulted
in a service provided to the business after registration. Therefore the rules for reclaiming VAT on the
purchase of services prior to registration only allow for purchases up to six months prior to the date o
registration.
Unique Football
The Robins @CTFCofficial
Oh dear......after 5 – 1 hammering at Stevenage it is vital that Mark Yates get’s his troops back
together focussed as they are still only six points away from a play off place.
Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
Yates on Stevenage v Cheltenham
"The nasty thing about it is, they've not had to do anything to score their goals.
"We'll have to have a look at (the defending). You see it out there and you think 'did I just see that
correctly?'
"At 2-0 down, you never think you're gone, but all your plans and the way we set up and what we
wanted to do was completely out of the window.
"Sometimes it's not about formations, because we still got bullied when we went to a flat back four
in the second half...and we all have to be better next week."
Upcoming Games over Christmas
So we have a massive game at The Robins against Wycombe Wanderers in 3rd place this Saturday
