The plight of the homeless was brought home to
shoppers in Cheltenham with an innovative lounge
installation outside the Beechwood Shopping
Centre on a busy shopping weekend just before
Xmas.
As people thronged the streets doing their Xmas
shopping homeless charity Emmaus built a lovely,
cosy lounge in the Strand in the freezing open air
as part of The Big Walk Home appeal. The lounge
complete with sofas, carpet, chairs, sideboard,
fireplace, candles and a Xmas tree attracted local
people to come over and talk to 'companions'
from Emmaus to find out how the charity helps
homeless people get back on their feet by offering
them a place to live and work. After gathering
outside the lounge supporters set off in groups on
different walks around Cheltenham talking to
people about homelessness and handing out
leaflets. The Emmaus van was also parked close to
the lounge installation and people donated warm
clothes and items such as gloves, pants and
scarves.
The King’s Table welcomes into the church community those who are in particular need or
vulnerable, the homeless and people living in emergency accommodation.
The guests receive a two course hot meal and the chance to relax and enjoy friendship and
support. Currently they are regularly serving between 80 and 110 people every Monday and
Friday.
