Obstacles? they get in the way, often in
life and for you to overcome. Each one's
a challenge, but we persevere and get
them done. Each time we gain
knowledge and build strength, on how to
tackle the same again, or similar. In
February 2012, I completed my first
offroad running event, and since then
I've been bitten with the bug of getting
cold, wet and muddy, and it really makes
me appreciate life! During the working
week, I'm sat behind a desk, working on
a computer like most of us, so decided I
needed something to get me out and
about and active, a new challenge!
Well, this October was my challenge,
and I'd chosen the Spartan Beast! Over
13 miles of trail running, with obstacles
that included? scaling over walls,
climbing up wet and muddy ropes,
carrying heavy objects, traversing
bodies of water, crawling under barbed
wire and jumping through flames! To
yourself, this might not sound like much
fun for an October weekend, but for
many like minded as myself, this was
one of the event's I'd been waiting for all
year.
Starting at 1:30 in the afternoon, the rain
held off for the day and I set off on the
course. After a short run, through some
mud up to the knees
and a river crossing, there was the first
of 26 obstacles, a 30ft high cargo net
over a pyramid frame, then continuing on
to run for another few miles to the next.
After about an hour and you’re settled
into the course, you get to carry a 30kg
Atlas Stones for about 50
wet, muddy rope to ring a
top and then crawl on han
through thick, muddy wate
Just after this was about h
that's when a lot of people
started getting cramp! From
running slowed down sligh
worry of cramping up in th
again, but with each of the
passing by, each mile bec
accomplishment and that t
sight! Some of the last few
obstacles included a wood
small blocks of wood attac
across, carrying a car tyre
mile, flipping a tractor tyre
way and 3 times back and
a heavy sandbag down a h
one point there was a sma
Raymond Blanc
The Re-Launch o
f Le Petit Blanc
www.uniquemediagroup.co.uk
The French chef Raymond Blanc was born in the
eastern region of France between Burgundy and
the Jura mountains. Today he is one of the most
respected chefs in Britain, he taught himself
entirely and also taught chefs such as Heston
Blumenthal, Michael Caines and Marco Pierre
White.
Raymond opened the first of Le Petit Blanc in
1996, two years later he opened Cheltenham.
This is Cheltenham’s busiest restaurant with
loyal locals and new faces enjoying recipes.
This was the first of the Brasserie Blanc’s to be
refurbished as it is the most popular of the twenty
restaurants. It has now transformed into a
spacious and cosy environment to enjoy time
with friends whether it is for food or drinks. I
caught up with Raymond and the manager of
Cheltenham, Emma to discuss the changes and
what is to come.
This is the first time that Raymond has seen the
restaurant since its refurbishment, and as we sit
at our table, he is looking behind, thinking hard
about something. He doesn’t like something, you
can tell by the look on his face. He turns to me
and says something is wrong here, it’s not right.
He is right, the beautiful arches that have been
added to the wall could do with the gaps filling.
So in reply I suggest more arches or big pieces of
art work as the little pictures are lost. With full
excitement he beams at me and says exactly!!!
So what were they trying to achieve with this new
refurbishment? ‘We wanted it more relaxed, not
so formal’ Raymond tells me, ‘we have got rid of
the table cloths and the ties our waiters wear’ It’s
a cooler colour compared to the French rouge
that once covered the walls. The centre seating
that used to preside over the main dining area
has gone and now more tables fill the restaurant.
Around the bar area are long benches and comfy
chairs with a rustic charm perfect for the
Cotswolds. Emma explains to me ‘It was
masculine, it needed a refresh. We wanted our
loyal customers to return but to also welcome a
newer younger audience.’
It is a lot brighter in the restaurant with lighting to
set the mood for a relaxed
atmosphere. They also have a wonderful new
feature at Petit Blanc. For those cheese and wine
lovers this is right up your street. A new Fromage
Bar, a place where you can go have a glass of red
and some cheese to match the palate.
But these aren’t the only changes made to the
Brasserie, as Emma explains we are now open
for breakfast from 8.30, so you can join us for
breakfast, a coffee, lunch, a glass of wine and
dinner. We have kept our set menu of 2 course for
£14 with wine. Raymond interjects ‘We are
bringing back historical recipes that are
favourites, but we have put a new spin on these
old dishes’ Along with Clive his executive Head
Chef, they have together over the last 30 years.
So what does Raymond love so much about
Cheltenham? ‘The Architecture’ he says ‘The
loyalty of our customers and the racing, there is
so much going on here. But it would not be what it
is today without the manager Emma. She has
been with me since day one and she understands
Cheltenham’s needs. We provide affordable,
fresh in-house food that is free range and local.
He entrusts Emma to create his vision for a place
for every day dining, describing Brassie Blanc as
the fabric of the Community.
As this is the re-launch of the restaurant, it is the
perfect time to introduce the new Autumn Menu.
As Raymond knocks back a few oysters, he tells
me I must try the Morteau Sausages. These are
amazing!
It was a pleasure to meet Raymond and Emma,
their vision was well received. The gorgeous new
look to this well-known Cheltenham place will
not disappoint. Whether you are meeting the girls
for a drink and maybe now a slice of cheese, or
having lunch and dinner, this new relaxed
atmosphere is warm and modern.
listed Terry Gornell scored twice to eventually beat Northampton.
Gornell opened the scoring from the floor after his initial effort was blocked, but
Joel Byrom equalised after the break with a neat finish.
Gornell headed in from a Matt Richards free-kick and substitute John Marquis
made it 3-1 against his old club.
David Moyo set up a tense finish by heading in but the Robins held on.
Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
Yates on Cheltenham v Northampton
"It was a massive win, we needed three points. We needed the players to show a
bit of spirit and character and we got that.
"They'll be up there at the end of the season, fighting for those play-off spots and
we've beaten them.
"Every time Eusebio got the ball he was threat for us, and we created some really
great chances in the first half”
Stop The Press......Cheltenham Town has also added another hard earned win
against Cambridge United taking The Robins back up into 9th place and in touching
distance of the Play Off places. On Saturday 25th October Cheltenham Town take on
Plymouth who are in 6th place so October could really see The Robins get back on
track.
The Dock Brief - Review
The Dock Brief is a play written by John Mortimer, which is Produced and
Directed by Michael Hasted. Alan "Tweedy" Digweed who is best known as
a contemporary clown with Giffords Circus plays Fowle the defendant, he
shares the Everyman stage with Mark Hyde who plays Morganhall the
knarled aging barrister looking for a lucky break.
So the stage is set in the intimate Everyman Studio in Cheltenham with the
whole play taking place in a prison cell. Fowle is accused of murdering his
wife and Morganhall the barrister after years of waiting for his first Dock
Brief is to defend him. What is really engaging is that there are only the two
actors on the stage which is rare in itself and both Tweedy and Mark Hyde
really work the audience.
www.uniquemediagroup.co.uk
32
The background story is that Fowle
had been accused of murdering his
wife as she had belittled and made fun
of his appearance and dour
demeanour over many years and one
day he snapped and murdered her.
Considering that this is Alan
Digweed's first straight role he is
brilliant, very understated and
polished. Yes at times there is the
clowning, gurning and silliness of
Tweedy the clown but he manages to
reign himself back to character.
Mark Smith Head of Chambers
@CotswoldBarristers on Imperial
Square provided the Legal and
Procedural Advice for The Dock Brief
and you could tell that the actors
where advised brilliantly. Carla Morris-
Papps the CEO at Cotswold Barristers
also sponsored the play and
Jonathon Rooke @Straightpr
provided the first class PR for the
evening.
So in summing up The Dock Brief was a really engaging play and the
hour rattled by and we believe this is the beginning of several straight
roles for Alan "Tweedy" Digweed and we look forward to seeing Mark
Hyde again at the Everyman. A Unique Legal Experience :)
About Hollie Gazzard Trust
The Hollie Gazzard Trust was set up following the death of Hollie while at work at
Fringe Benefits & La Bella Beauty Salon, Gloucester. Hollie’s family wanted
something positive to come out of the tragic loss of Hollie. Hollie’s passion was
hairdressing and her family wanted to give others the opportunity that Hollie was
fortunate to have and fulfill a career in hairdressing. Application was made to the
charity commission and on 25 April 2014, the Hollie Gazzard Trust, a Charitable
Incorporated Organization (CIO) was created. While the family are devastated and
can’t change what has happened to Hollie, they hope the funds raised will help
others.
The Trust relies solely on donations from the generosity of individuals and
Companies. HGT will holds a number of official fundraising activities throughout the
year. If you are interested in running your own fund raising activity, please get in touch
with Sian Prysziak, our fundraising manager. Sian can be contacted on: e-mail:
fundraising@holliegazzard.org
The Hollie Gazzard Trust also helps provide funding to Increase The Peace and
GDASS (Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Service. Please get involved :)
News
New Trustees
We are delighted to confirm that two new Trustees, Jo Minns and Sally Morrissey
have been appointed. Jo has been instrumental in agreeing the Partnership with
Gloucestershire College having been Head of School Hairdressing, Beauty and
Holistic Therapies. Her experience in the hairdressing and educational field will be
invaluable and we hope that Jo will continue to develop this aspect of the Trust’s aim.
Sally Morrissey is the current manager of Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support
Service and has provided valuable knowledge and guidance to the Trust on all things
associated with Domestic Abuse. As an important aim of the Trust we hope that
Sally will use her knowledge and experience to guide the Trust to enable it to be as
effective as possible and fulfil its ambitions.
We hope that both Jo and Sally will enjoy their involvement with the Trust and
provide valuable guidance and support in their respective fields of expertise. We very
much look forward to working with both of them.

Remembering Good Times,
Accepting Tough Times too:
Memory Stones
A simple bag of three stones may be a useful way to have a
really meaningful conversation with your children and help them
to find a way of coping with all sorts of memories. Sometimes
it can be hard to find a balance between the difficult memories
which are often associated with a death by murder or manslaughter
and happier, more positive memories. The three
different stones can be used to convey a message in a special
and safe way.
The smooth pebble feels ordinary and fairly comfortable to hold in your hand. It is there to represent ordinary,
everyday memories of the person who died.
He always rang the doorbell when he came home from work even though he had a key.
She always sang along with the adverts when they came on the TV.
The rough rock feels sharp and painful to hold. It is there to represent the memories of difficult and hard
times and also memories of the way that the person died.
I remember some of the rows we had; we said some hurtful things to each other.
When I close my eyes I can still see the picture in my head of how she must have looked.
The gemstone looks and feels precious, shiny and polished. It is there to bring back memories of the
really special times spent with the person who died.
I’ll never forget that day on the beach when he tried to catch the frisbee in his mouth and got a face full
of sand. He couldn’t stop laughing.
I remember making a birthday cake in the shape of a car with her; it didn’t really look like a car but we
thought it was brilliant.
The first two stones can usually be found in a garden or park. Gemstones can be found at craft or gift
shops. Encourage your children to hold each stone in turn and give examples of memories and events
that they could attach to the different stones. You can also share your own.
The secret is to try to find a way to hold the three stones in your hand – the rough alongside the precious
and the ordinary – and to hold these three types of memories together in a way that they all find their
place. The rough becomes no more important than the other two and in time can be described in ways
that hurt less.
Using this simple bag of stones can help break the conspiracy of silence that sometimes creeps in when
tough stuff happens in families. When having a difficult day, the stones can also be a useful way to start
a conversation, for example:
Does the rough rock feel particularly sharp today?
