Open/Gathering Spaces<br />
• Designate some parts <strong>of</strong> campus as permanent<br />
open space.<br />
• Develop various types <strong>of</strong> gathering spaces. Make<br />
each space noticeably secure.<br />
• Name gathering spaces for easy identification and<br />
wayfinding, for example, Campus Quad.<br />
Campus Site Furniture/Materials<br />
• Incorporate site furniture in gathering spaces, i.e.<br />
benches, trash receptacles.<br />
• Avoid placing site furniture under trees where<br />
birds flock.<br />
• Configure amenities to pedestrian scale.<br />
• Unify the design <strong>of</strong> planter pots, trash receptacles<br />
and exterior ash urns<br />
• Use powder-coated metal for durability and aesthetics<br />
<strong>of</strong> site furniture.<br />
Landscaping<br />
• Blend with and enhance current campus planting<br />
when adding new plants.<br />
• Purchase plant materials that are disease-resistant,<br />
suited for the Beaumont climate, and require little<br />
special attention and low water usage.<br />
• Change fading or “seasonal” plant materials with<br />
the seasons.<br />
Sustainability<br />
• Construct all new buildings and major renovation<br />
projects to meet LEED Silver certification.<br />
• Locate and design dumpster enclosures to hide the<br />
dumpster from public view while providing easy<br />
access for trucks.<br />
• Incorporate campus sustainability standards. (See<br />
Campus Sustainability section.)<br />
• Create architectural design guidelines to ensure<br />
consistency <strong>of</strong> existing buildings and new construction.<br />
Land Acquisition<br />
• Develop a land acquisition program to examine<br />
alternative options for future campus growth<br />
and expansion. The future growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>LIT</strong> will be<br />
dependent upon how and where the institute can<br />
expand.<br />
Facilities<br />

• Renovate the Beeson Building to house all Administration<br />
functions and <strong>of</strong>fices after the new<br />
Student Services Building is complete in Phase III.<br />
• Expand the Multi-Purpose Center to accommodate<br />
new Allied Health programs.<br />
• Develop a report to address <strong>LIT</strong>’s Silsbee Center<br />
extension and proposed joint-use Regional Public<br />
Service and Safety Facility.<br />
Transportation<br />
• Coordinate with the Texas Department <strong>of</strong> Transportation<br />
(TxDOT) and the City <strong>of</strong> Beaumont on the<br />
potential conversion <strong>of</strong> University Boulevard north<br />
<strong>of</strong> East Lavaca Street, from a two-lane to a fourlane<br />
thoroughfare.<br />
