Wintec Register of Research and Scholarly Activity 2004

Introduction
As Wintec’s newly appointed Research Director, I am pleased to
introduce the 2004 Research Register. In doing so, I would like to
acknowledge the contributions to research at Wintec provided by
Stephen Cox, Wintec’s first Research Manager, who resigned in
January 2005.
The following goal, as specified in Wintec’s Business Plan for 2005,
shows the institution’s commitment to research, especially applied
research:
“Enhance the research culture within Wintec and in collaboration
with other organizations so as to increase the number and quality of
research outputs that support the teaching/research nexus, generate
new knowledge, creative work, innovative products and processes
and provide additional funding sources for Wintec.”
Given that research is a relatively new expectation for staff in Wintec
and other institutes of technology/polytechnics, I believe that we
can feel justifiably proud of our accomplishments. There are many
staff members who have achieved high standards in their particular
fields and are receiving national and, in some cases, international
recognition for their research. There are also many staff about to
embark career paths that will include research as a significant part of
their activities.
I am very hopeful that Wintec will continue to increase both the quantity and quality of its research outputs in the future,
particularly given its decision to remain in the Performance-Based Research Fund. I am confident that research will become
even more an integral part of Wintec’s culture as we go about implementing the recommendations of the recently completed
review of research.
