To advance business in the Nelson Tasman region
Aspire 2012 | Business Awards 2012 | Annual Report | Employment Relations Service

From the CEO
This issue includes our Annual Report for
the 2011 year, highlighting some of the key
developments and on-going benefits for
members. For me, the highlight was the
diversity of the incredible businesses we
visited as part of the BNZ Partners Business
After Fives and Bowater Motor Group
Women’s Networking Functions. These were
a real source of inspiration. I particularly
want to thank our BNZ Business After Five
hosts where attendance was often around
100 business people (up on average 13%
from two years ago). These functions offer a
fantastic opportunity for business owners to
share ideas and expertise, to learn from each
other in an informal setting and to foster
and build their business connections.
The art of networking, knowing how to
‘work a room’ doesn’t come naturally, and
the “Top Tips for Networking” workshop
we piloted in 2011 has proved so successful
we are continuing with these workshops
this year. If you haven’t already booked
to attend one, I encourage you to do
so and make the most of the business
networking and promotional opportunities
membership brings.
A new member to member service being
launched this month is 30 minutes free
employment relations (ER) advice. This
exciting new development comes at the
request of members for affordable, quality
advice in this area. It covers ER advice – the
here and now – not the more long term
strategic HR field, although the need for
further work in this area may well stem
from an immediate ER issue. As a member,
we encourage you to make use of this
new service if and when the need arises in
your business. The depth of expertise local
members have is impressive and we thank
the members who are taking part in this
new member to member offer. See inside for
details – and let us know your feedback.
This year the business awards reaches the
25 year milestone – there is no doubt it will
be a big year at the awards so make sure
you book your seats early (Awards night is
2 November) and consider entering your
business this year – there is no better time!
Entries are open and details and entry forms
are available from our office and on www.
commerce.org.nz
As part of the 2012 Westpac Nelson Tasman
Chamber of Commerce Business Awards we
will be acknowledging the contribution of
businesses that were in business 25 years
ago and are still part of our regions rich
business fabric today. Let us know if your
business fits that category and tell us of
others that do as well.
Salmon: business growth of national
significance
All New Zealanders now get to
have a say on a proposal that
has the potential to earn the
country hundreds of millions of
dollars in export revenue.
Nelson-based New Zealand King Salmon
has applied to the Environmental Protection
Authority (EPA) to commission nine new
salmon farms over an extended period in
the Marlborough Sounds.
The company’s application has been
‘publicly notified’ by the Board of Inquiry
(BOI) established by the Environmental
Protection Authority which means
submissions are now open until May 2.
Anyone who wants to can offer their support,
either solely in a written submission or in
tandem with an appearance before the
board.
Reports prepared for the company and
submitted with its application show that if
fully approved, its additional production will
provide up to 120 new jobs in the region.
Its export earnings are forecast to nearly
quadruple from the current $60 million to
more than $230 million a year by 2015.
The company’s plans are capable of
delivering huge growth for Marlborough
and for New Zealand utilising a quality and
sustainable product that occupies only a
small amount of space it says.
NZ King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne
is urging New Zealanders to support
his company’s application to promote
sustainable jobs and preserve the
environment for future generations.
“There are huge benefits for New Zealand
and for Marlborough in our plans but we
cannot accomplish those without the
support of the community and the ‘silent
majority’. In total, the amount of additional
surface water space that will be farmed is a
tiny 12 hectares out of the total Sounds area
of 150,000 hectares.
“We are world’s biggest producer of King
salmon with 55 per cent of the global
market and currently we simply cannot meet
demand. Offshore our brand is well known
and preferred among many professional
chefs and in the hospitality industry so it has
a high profile.
“We are the largest single contributor of long
chain Omega-3s in the NZ diet and as such
we make a major contribution to healthy
child brain development, healthy joints,
reduced heart disease and better eyesight.
“Our business has a bright future sustainably
producing a healthy and delicious food
product for which New Zealand already has
a strong international reputation.
“A positive submission is a rare opportunity
for local people to add huge value to our
region and show the world we can have
premium branded Marlborough salmon
while preserving our environment for future
generations.”
Mr Rosewarne says if the company is able to
grow its business it will be well on the way to
creating a cluster of supporting businesses.
“The economic benefits go very deep. All
sorts of local and national businesses will
benefit from work associated with the
construction and our ongoing operations
– engineering, education, taxis, marine
industry, net makers, transport and hotels
and hospitality industry operators.”
He says the company also hopes to be able
to increase production to the point that
the industry can support a feed mill in New
Zealand with “huge downstream benefits”.
Anyone can make a submission to the
Board of Inquiry in writing and on the EPA’s
prescribed form. Submission forms are
available from www.epa.govt.nz, can be
downloaded from www.kingsalmon.co.nz
or can be requested by freephone on 0800
722 667.
Submitters need not provide all the
information to support their position until
the evidence exchange part of the process,
expected to be in late July. Hearings are
expected to start in mid-August.
Computing in the clouds
At WHK, more and more
of our clients are starting
to implement cloud based
technologies. But what does
the term ‘cloud computing’
actually mean in simple terms
and what are some of the
benefits and implications of
this technology?
Not as ambiguous as it sounds cloud
computing simply refers to an internetbased
computing service where users are
provided with access to servers, software,
applications, storage and networking via
the internet. That means the client does not
have a local server, a back up server, or any
of the software applications.
While this may sound a bit geeky, you
are probably already using cloud based
applications in some way: gmail, skype
and internet banking are all cloud
based applications.
Software providers, like Xero, are making the
most of cloud computing by providing user
friendly accounting solutions for clients. This
technology can simplify accounting work,
making the process simpler for both the
client and the accountant!
Here are some of the benefits of moving
your computing needs to a cloud:
• Cost effectiveness: cloud technology
can, in some cases, deliver considerable
savings on software, hardware, power
and support expenses.
• Easy to use: cloud technology is
generally user friendly and usually
just requires a computer, browser and
internet connection, resulting in very few
maintenance requirements.
• Accessibility: one of the major benefits
of cloud technology is that it can be
accessed anytime and anywhere, making
work a lot easier for employees who work
remotely.
• Security: many people have security
concerns when it comes to cloud
technology; however, with proper
physical security, anti-virus software,
and firewall protection your data is just
as safe as it would be using traditional
technology.
• Disaster recovery: using cloud
technology to backup data in an
alternative location allows crucial
information to be recovered quickly and
business operations to return to normal
as soon as possible.
• Sustainability: cloud technologies can
be better for the environment due to
reduced paper and energy requirements.
As with anything that’s new and a bit
techie it is normal for businesses to
have some concerns when thinking
about implementing this technology.
Unsurprisingly security, availability and
performance are the top concerns cited
by everyday business owners when
contemplating making the move to
cloud computing.
These are valid concerns as security
breaches, problems with accessing data and
reduced performance have been widely
reported in the media. However, experts
have described these issues as being ‘like
airplane disasters’ in that they happen
very infrequently: there are trillions of
transactions a day but you only hear about
the very few that go wrong!
For an easy move to the cloud and to make
the most of what this new technology has to
offer, ensure that you get sufficient support
and advice from trained IT professionals.
If you would like input from WHK on how
to move your accounting requirements to a
cloud based service like Xero, please contact:
NMIT students help strengthen China
friendship
Nelson Marlborough Institute of
Technology is strengthening its
relationship with China thanks
to a little help from its students.
NMIT has selected two Bachelor of
Information Technology (IT) and three
Bachelor of Commerce students for a
three-week trip to China this month where
they will assist NMIT tutors in the delivery
of management and software development
courses at one of its sister universities -
Zhejiang Water College in Hangzhou City.
NMIT Management lecturer John Inglis
says it is the third year students have
accompanied tutors on the annual trip and
the first time IT students have been included.
“It is a chance to showcase NMIT’s brightest
talent in the emerging Chinese market
while rewarding top students with a unique
learning opportunity,” John says. “The trip
opens their eyes to a new culture, gives
them confidence in coping with different
situations and shows them the opportunities
that exist. It’s a brilliant experience –
especially for our business and IT students
who will work in a globalized economy.”
Bachelor of Commerce student Melissa
Withers is among those selected for the trip.
The 24-year-old has never visited China but
has been reading up about the country.
“It’s going to be a really interesting and
fun experience. China is such a rapidly
expanding country with a fascinating culture
- there’s so much to learn.”
She is looking forward to experiencing a
new culture and sharing her knowledge and
expertise with her Chinese counterparts.
Left to Right: Melissa Withers, Tessa Hancock, Cameron Noble, John Inglis, NMIT Business Tutor, Mary Proctor, Business Services
Programme Area Leader, Yulelani Murray and Tim Macintosh.
The trip is paid for by NMIT at a cost of
around $3000 per student, including travel
and accommodation expenses. As well as
assisting with the management course the
students will visit Shanghai and explore
Hangzhou City, which has a population
of about 8 million and is built around an
expansive man-made lake.
IT student Tim Macintosh is also off to China
for the first time. In his final year of a three
year Bachelor in Information Technology
degree, majoring in web and software
development, he hopes the experience will
improve his chances of securing a job at the
end of the year.
“Employers will hopefully see it shows
you’re prepared to go out of your
comfort zone and see things from
another perspective.”
Zhejiang Water College is one of three
Chinese universities that NMIT has
established a successful international
partnership with. NMIT delivers programmes
at the universities and the Chinese students
also come to New Zealand to study at NMIT’s
Nelson and Marlborough campuses.
“By developing strong relationships
with these universities NMIT is helping
bring Chinese students to the Nelson
Marlborough region,” John says. “As
the global education market is highly
competitive, these types of initiatives can
give us an edge.”
For Tim, one of the highlights of going
to China will be having the opportunity
to share everything he has learned so far
through NMIT.
“I hope to bring my knowledge, enthusiasm
and a bit of fun to the lessons in China. I’ve
really enjoyed my time at NMIT and feel
extremely privileged to be able to give
something back through this experience.”
Annual Report: 2011 in Review
2011 has seen the Chamber position itself more
closely at the centre of business activity in the
region. As a result, membership has remained
strong (at around 500 businesses), the levels
of attendance at functions and events has
remained high, and we introduced a new series
of workshops and information sharing sessions
for business owners.
The attached graphs illustrate the strength of the Chamber – with
a stable membership (44% of our members have been with the
Chamber for over 5 years) representative of the businesses in our
region (83% of members are true “SME” businesses, with less than 11
full time staff). Levels of engagement by members continues to climb,
with the attached graph showing average attendance levels at the
BNZ Partners Business After Five reach 87 business people!
There was plenty of fun last year, including over 700 businesses
participating in the Long Lunch down the centre of Trafalgar
Street. And there has been plenty of hard work on key issues
facing the region. The refocusing of our advocacy work through an
Infrastructure Group (chaired by Gary Stocker, Knapps Lawyers) and
the on-going work of the Regional Issues Group (chaired by Mike
McMellon, Pitt & Moore) has seen significant challenging of local
government priorities and a clearer voice for business.
A key issue has been the Local Government Commission’s
examination of the call for a combined Nelson Tasman District. The
benefits of amalgamation from a business point of view are clear –
certainty and consistency of decision making based on one regional
plan will lead to cost savings for business owners, better take up
of regional opportunities and minimisation of duplication of effort.
Whatever the final governance arrangements, the Chamber will
continue to advocate strongly for business and work to achieve a
more business friendly environment.
The late Sir Paul Callaghan, the keynote speaker at Aspire 2011,
inspired conference attendees to ensure our region is a place where
talented people choose to live. That challenge has underpinned
much of the Chamber’s advocacy role this year as we have focused
on ensuring Council use of rate payer funds is focused on creating an
environment conducive to business investment and prosperity.
The redesign of our website in 2011, commerce.org.nz makes it easier
for members and the wider business community to access the latest
business information, identify where to go for advice and find out
the services offered by our members. The business directory has
emerged as the most visited page and the upgrade listing available
makes those members stand out.
Another significant development in 2011 was the partnership with
the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and the Nelson Regional
Economic Development Agency, to become the Regional Business
Partner for the Top of the South. Our role is to work with business
owners to improve their business capability and achieve their
growth plans. Over 100 businesses took advantage of the free
business assessment and the “Where to” Workshops and we issued
38 vouchers for business capability training. Our sincere thanks to
the experienced business people who have shared their expertise
at these workshops – Mike McMellon, Rob Lane and Nick Mason
from Pitt & Moore, Chris Butler from CB Marketing, Ian Williams,
Testimonials
Alan Hinton and David Hill. Thanks also to the support from Paul
Rosanowski of WHK with our “mobile business assessment” service.
The 24th Business Awards were once again a showcase of business
excellence in the region – with Jennian Homes taking out the
Westpac Supreme Award in the face of very strong competition from
all categories. Thank you to Westpac, principal sponsor and to all the
Business Awards sponsors and to the judges, Rob Howie (Westpac),
Alan Hinton, Gary Stocker (Knapps Lawyers), and John Inglis – who
after many many years of judging the awards has taken a leave
of absence!
2011 has been another challenging year and the Board and CEO
thank the staff for their on-going enthusiasm and energy. The
Chamber is especially grateful for the support of all our sponsors.
Particular tribute is paid to our cornerstone sponsors – Air Nelson,
Bowater Motor Group, Gen I, The Nelson Mail, Port Nelson and WHK.
Your steadfast support for the Chamber has enabled us to deliver real
benefits for our members and for the wider business community.
2012 is shaping up to be a year full of promise and the Chamber looks
forward to working with you to achieve your business goals.
“I have been working with the Chamber in Nelson since
the beginning of my business Oxygen Skincare, which has
now been operating for three years. I have always found
the staff a great friendly group whom are always willing to
help whenever they can, its great to have a resource like the
Chamber to gain help, knowledge and assistance within the
business arena, and at the Chamber no request is ever too
big or to small, a great team all with a good knowledge of the
business environment.”
– Alana Riley, Oxygen Skincare Ltd
“Becoming a member of the Nelson Tasman Chamber of
Commerce has been invaluable for my business. Attending
Chamber events has raised the profile of Jennian Homes
within the business community and created new
opportunities for growth and enterprise.“
“My staff and I have benefited from the networking
opportunities and motivational speeches by business leaders
offered at Chamber events.”
“Winning three awards at last year’s Chamber Business
Awards has really set us apart from our competitors, and
we continue to benefit from positive referrals within the
business community.
I encourage every business to participate in the annual
awards. The process offers a valuable insight into your
business and areas for improvement. My business continues
to reap the benefits year on year.”
“Being a member of the chamber - it was a no brainer really.
Like minded business people associating and doing business
with each other. Gaining the respect and trust that can only
be done face to face which leads to opportunities. You then
get the chance to prove yourself. All these little steps become
easy being a member of the Nelson Tasman Chamber of
Commerce with fantastic support from the chamber team.”
Emma Manhart
Behind the Designs
Emma Manhart is Nelson’s own colourful
fashion designer and her unique boutique on
Hardy St is now a cornerstone of the Nelson
fashion scene.
Women who wear Emma Manhart are drawn
to her rich use of colour and print, her well
tailored cut and the sense of fun and surprise
inherent in her garments. “For me the
excitement is in encouraging a woman to
try something she might not automatically
wear. My clothes help women to celebrate the
exuberant part of themselves that they may
have forgotten”
Menswear is next in Emma’s plan.
Inspirations:
• Andre Courreges, the futuristic French
designer (also an engineer)
• Christian Lacroix for his riotous use of colour
• Vivienne Westwood for her reinvented
tailoring
The Business ethos:
Emma Manhart designs and manufactures
in Nelson and sources locally made materials
wherever possible including NZ wool, and
works to minimise her carbon footprint. “For
me the pleasure is in having my business
where I choose to live. I believe that fantastic
fashion can be made anywhere in the world
because inspiration can and should come from
everywhere in the world”
‘’If I can do anything for fashion it is to design
garments that capture the imagination
of women and men waiting to express
themselves.’’ Emma Manhart
Event Audio
Event Audio is a Nelson owned and operated
company providing specialist audio services
and equipment to the Top of the South
region. This includes corporate presentations
and private functions, right through to large
concerts and festivals.
The company was set up to fill the growing
demand for professional sound systems and to
offer quality “plug and play” portable systems.
We realised traditional PA systems were overly
complicated and advances in technology mean
that modern systems now incorporate many
audio processes into a single unit. Not only is
this timesaving, but it allows clients to operate
basic equipment themselves and still obtain
professional results.
Event Audio cover all aspects of audio
presentations and can recommend a solution
with the right equipment and experienced
technicians. This includes modern LED stage
lighting facilities too. We also provide audio
installation packages for small through to
large venues.
Defamation in the Electronic Age
Given the recent high profile
defamation claim by Chris
Cairns against a Mr Lalit
Modi arising from a single
“tweet” sent by Mr Modi, it
is worthwhile reviewing the
risks of defamation in the
electronic age. Some people
have the misconception that
the rules of defamation don’t
apply to the Internet. Another
common misconception is that
defamation is only relevant to
the rich and famous and need
not concern ordinary folk.
By way of general background a defamatory
statement is one which falsely discredits
a person and exposes them to ridicule. A
business can also be defamed. One of the
most common grounds of defamation
actions arise from imputations that a person
is incompetent or unfit for a job or role. Even
claims that a person is lazy or shirks their
duty have been found to be defamatory.
One requirement for defamation is that the
words are published. Some people think
that this only refers to newspapers or the
like and that statements disseminated
over the Internet are somehow different
because of the open culture of the Internet
which protects more robust discussion
and comments than traditional media. The
Courts have been very clear in rejecting this.
The rules of defamation apply every bit as
much to comments posted online as on the
printed page.
In fact Internet based defamation can be
a lot more dangerous than conventional
sources given the almost infinite ability to
republish and disseminate comments (as
Mr Modi seems to have found out given
the impact of his single tweet). Defamation
on the net occurs at the time and in the
place where the defamatory material is
downloaded. Accordingly you can find
yourself sued in any number of countries
based on what you consider to be your New
Zealand web page or forum. All of these
issues apply equally to comments posted on
Facebook and other social media.
The other popular misconception is that
defamation is some sort of rich man’s game
that only applies to well known actors,
politicians, or sports people. It is true that
many actions do involve these players and
that they seem to meander through the
Courts for many years until everyone has
forgotten about the original insult and
everything is settled behind closed doors.
However defamation can apply to everyone,
and (as the comments above referring to
incompetence or the like show) can apply
to what might appear to be relatively
innocuous comments.
There can also be a real sting in the form
of damages for actions between ordinary
people. For example one New Zealand
decision involved an argument between
two taxi drivers where one taxi driver said,
in the hearing of other drivers on the rank,
that an innocent taxi driver had paedophile
convictions. Even although it was only
published to a very limited number of
people (those taxi drivers who overheard it)
the defamer had to pay his innocent victim
$40,000 in damages.
Accordingly if you are ever tempted to post
negative comments about anyone, or any
business, on the Internet think long and
hard about it. If you still want to do it, make
sure that your facts are correct. If you are
expressing an opinion, make sure you set
out the facts that that opinion is based on,
and that it is a reasonable expression of an
opinion. Preferably take legal advice first.
The Importance of Saving
Sue Buparai (Partner)
Nelson Marlborough &
West Coast
The fundamentals of banking
are to gather in money from
Savers, and loan it out sensibly
to Borrowers.
Banks / financial institutions pay interest to
their Savers, and collect interest from their
Borrowers - with the basic premise being
that the differential between these 2 interest
rates covers the running costs for the bank
and returns a profit to the shareholders (just
like any business!).
Unfortunately, due to a historic lack of
savings culture in New Zealand there is a
savings imbalance in New Zealand. So BNZ
(like other banks in New Zealand) relies on
finding nearly 40% of the money it lends to
homeowners and businesses from overseas
savers to help keep New Zealand working.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (and
the banks themselves) have recognised
this reliance, which was bought to the fore
during the Global Financial Crisis. Overseas
savers that were willing to lend to New
Zealand banks demanded a premium for
doing so, which meant that there was a
knock on impact of higher interest rates
to New Zealanders with loans during this
period.
On the positive side Savers in New Zealand
were rewarded more handsomely with
attractive interest rates on Bank Term
Deposits as banks encouraged New
Zealanders to save more.
Although the tide is turning with businesses
and households deleveraging (paying off
debt) i.e. household debt has reduced from
154% of GDP to 144% of GDP over the last
3 years, there is still a need for an increase
in savings.
Why save?
Savings need to be an important part of
everyday life because they allow businesses
and households to accrue for unforeseen
or emergency expenses, budget for large
cash outflows (i.e. tax payments, family
holidays, weddings), build the equity in your
personal balance sheet or business, help
contribute towards funding future projects
(business expansion/home improvements),
and provide a buffer or cushion to help you
through the hard times.
Ultimately savings are on-lent by banks to
New Zealanders for new business ventures,
expansions and hence contribute towards
the growth of the New Zealand economy.
It’s not just if we’re saving; it’s
where we are saving…
Another useful lesson that savers have
learned from the spate of finance company
collapses in New Zealand is not just to
save per se, but to research more carefully
where they choose to save their money.
Credit Ratings are one signal of the
financial capability or creditworthiness of
a bank / financial institution. These ratings
demonstrate the capability of a bank /
financial institution to meet its financial
obligations as they fall due, for example;
when savers want to withdraw their
money the bank / financial institution has
sufficient loan repayments coming in from
its borrowers and available liquid assets
to ensure this can happen. The strength
of a financial institution can be used to
give an approximate likelihood of default,
and RBNZ’s ‘Know Your Credit Ratings’
paper illustrates this succinctly. An AA
rated institution (i.e. comparable to BNZ’s
AA- rating) has a probability of a 1 in 300
chance of defaulting over a 5 year timeframe.
Comparing this to a BBB rated institution
increases the probability of default to a 1 in
30 chance over the same 5 year time period.
So, as a saver, you’d be wise to think carefully
about the risk involved in where you actually
choose to keep your savings.
How BNZ can help
BNZ continues to drive a savings culture
in New Zealand by offering fee free
savings accounts for businesses, PIE
savings accounts and term deposits that
are subject to lower tax rates (subject to
income levels). Our Total Money offset
account bank account has helped New
Zealanders save $101m in interest charges
over the last 5 years. Our website has a
dedicated ‘Be Money Smart’ section and
our Banking Advisors are available in-store
to help with personal and small business
customers savings goals. In addition to this
my role in the BNZ Partners team is to foster
relationships and provide very competitive
deposit rates for larger cash investors.
So, to discuss putting a savings plan into
place, review your savings, or look at options
for putting your hard earned cash to work
for you in our competitive term deposits –
call into your nearest BNZ and we’ll discuss
how we can help you be better off.
