What kind of economic 

future will our children have? 

Young people today are facing 

challenges far beyond those of 

previous generations. The realities 

of high unemployment, migrating 

jobs, and escalating debt will be a 

burden to young people at a time 

when they first begin to assert their 

economic independence. Once they 

overcome those challenges, they 

may experience a deterioration 

of federal entitlement programs, 

the elimination of defined benefit 

pension plans and a changing health 

care infrastructure. All of these 

issues add up to a very uncertain 

economic future for today’s young 

people. It is absolutely critical that 

we invest the time, and whatever 

resources necessary, to empower 

our children to own their economic 

success. This process must begin 

early and continue throughout 

each child’s formal education. In 

partnership with the business and 

education communities, Junior 

Achievement is already providing 

this essential guidance. 

The strength of JA lies in the quality 

and effectiveness of our sequential 

programs and the thousands of 

volunteers and donors who give 

their time, talent and resources 

to deliver them. It is this strength 

in numbers that enables us to 

positively impact the path our 

children take through our economic 

system. The result in 2011 was more 

than 24,500 young people who are 

better informed regarding issues 

related to work readiness, financial 

literacy and entrepreneurship. 

While we are pleased with the 

many young people who have had 

the opportunity to participate, we 

must focus our attention on those 

who did not. The challenges ALL 

our children will face are real and 

they need our immediate guidance. 

Through the continued support 

of those listed in this report, we 

maintain our steadfast commitment 

to insuring our children are 

prepared to face the changing world 

around them.

contributor, volunteer, school 

administrator, teacher and parent 

whose support has allowed us to 

remain strong during these difficult 

times. The economic issues affecting 

our children have never been 

greater; achieving our mission has

Junior Achievement strength comes from those who not only believe 

in the mission but also step up to support it. 

Not only did General Electric employees bring Junior 

Achievement to Northeastern New York 58 years ago, they 

continue to support the mission through local and national 

initiatives. When it comes to setting the bar for community 

support, the GE Family has led the way. 

Each year a variety of national corporations enter into 

strategic partnerships with JA Worldwide, the parent company 

of Junior Achievement of Northeastern New York. These 

partnerships are developed to benefit a large number of local 

Junior Achievement areas giving each funder the opportunity 

to benefit children throughout their operating footprint. The 

partnerships vary from company to company but the bottom 

line is that more young people are able to participate in Junior 

Achievement’s programs as a direct result. This year four 

national partnerships took place on the local level headlined 

by our 2011 signature sponsor General Electric. The other 

companies participating are AT&T, HSBC and Rent-A-Center. 

As the 2011 signature sponsor, GE reaffirmed its commitment 

to the mission of Junior Achievement and the 24,514 children 

we served last school year. Their support came from both 

the GE Foundation as well as many local divisions throughout 

Northeastern New York. All totaled, GE contributed more 

than $50,000 to help JA achieve its mission. GE support went 

beyond just writing a check – they committed themselves 

personally by teaching JA classes and hosting students at their 

facilities to help them better understand the world of work. 

Globally, the GE Foundation invested $1.5 million in the GE-JA 

Education Initiative. Locally, during the 2010-11 year, more 

than 80 volunteers provided JA programs in high-need schools 

to help 1,871 students. 94 inner city classes received the JA 

program as a direct result of the $25,000 GE Foundation grant 

received through the national partnership. 

While the GE alliance is by far the largest, it is not the only 

one benefiting the children of our community. 

The Volunteer Alliance between JA and HSBC goes back fifteen 

years and the overall relationship more than sixty years. This 

partnership provides the JA Area Offices with the opportunity 

to recruit HSBC employee volunteers to teach JA Programs— 

and then get reimbursed at a rate of $300.00 per class. Locally, 

25 volunteers gave their time to teach classes throughout 

Northeastern New York. This in turn resulted in $7,500 of 

program support. 

Rent-A-Center’s Financial Literacy Initiative was a three-year 

initiative. We received our final payment on this multiyear grant 

commitment during the 2010-11 school year. The program’s 

purpose was to provide K-12 students with JA personal financial 

literacy education programs. Rent-A-Center provided funding to 

JA organizations throughout the country. The funding was part of 

a nationwide initiative between Junior Achievement and Rent- 

A-Center, which involved an $800,000 grant dispersed over a 

four-year period. 

As a new supporter this year, we partnered with AT&T. The AT&T 

/ JA Worldwide Job Shadow Initiative allowed students to spend 

a day at AT&T to learn firsthand the educational background and 

skills needed to obtain and succeed in that work environment. 

Nationally, AT&T is committed to reaching over 100,000 students 

in grades 9-12 over the next four years. Locally, 24 students 

participated in Job Shadow Day which AT&T reimbursed at a rate 

of $46.00 per child. Another 14 students participated in AT&T 

Day on the Hill in Albany. Those participating learned about the 

job of being a legislator, media, security and other careers at the 

State Capitol. 

As JA Worldwide develops more and more national strategic 

partners to embrace the Junior Achievement mission in a 

significant way, JA of Northeastern New York becomes a stronger 

organization that is able to continue to vigorously pursue our 

mission during these difficult economic times. Currently we are 

busy trying to identify more local partners that will also step up 

so that we can positively influence the lives of more children. It is 

critical that we do this - no less then the future of our country is 

at stake.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 

PROGRAMS 

FORMING THE FOUNDATION 

OF THEIR FUTURE 

A series of six engaging themes help kindergarten 

through fifth–grade students applying basic economic 

concepts to their life experiences. Each theme builds on 

the previous, stressing the relationship between school 

and future success. Students begin to see their place in 

the world as individuals, workers and consumers. 

While making sense of dollars and cents, the 

Junior Achievement’s Elementary School Programs 

produce an appreciation for lifelong fiscal learning, 

global responsibility and personal growth. 

Students learn that people must assume roles as 

individuals, consumers, and workers in an expanding 

environment that extends from self to global relations. 

Each program theme includes activities that help 

students develop appropriate decision-making and 

workforce-readiness skills. 

KINDERGARTEN 

OURSELVES explains personal economics through a 

collection of stories read aloud by a volunteer. 

FIRST GRADE 

OUR FAMILIES emphasizes the roles families play in the 

local economy. 

SECOND GRADE 

OUR COMMUNITY explores the interdependent roles 

of workers in a community and how communities work. 

THIRD GRADE 

OUR CITY studies careers, the skills people need, and 

how businesses contribute to the city. 

FOURTH GRADE 

OUR REGION introduces the relationship between 

natural, human and capital resources found in different 

regions and explores regional businesses. 

FIFTH GRADE 

OUR NATION examines how businesses operate in 

the United States and explores various economic issues 

impacting these businesses. 

Students learn that people must 

assume roles as individuals, consumers and 

workers in an expanding environment that

MORE THAN MONEY 

is most suitable for grades three

CONSTRUCTING THE FRAME- 

WORK OF SUCCESS 

Junior Achievement’s middle grades programs offer four programs for 

middle school students. At this age, children are struggling to establish 

their own identities and life goals. These programs allow children to learn 

fundamental economic concepts and information about the world of 

work through fun activities that create enthusiasm for learning. 

Investing in our future, Junior Achievement’s Middle School Programs instill 

students with the skills needed to value global business practices and 

succeed in today’s economy. 

Through each program, the volunteer is able to select from a variety 

of activity plans to complement the regular classroom curriculum and 

effectively communicate the relationship between staying in school and 

the students’ future.

GLOBAL MARKETPLACE 

This program is designed to 

provide practical information 

about the key aspects of the global 

economy, what makes world 

trade work, and how trade affects 

students’ daily lives. Students learn 

about imports and exports. They 

work in groups to identify and 

understand business practices used 

in other countries.

ECONOMICS FOR SUCCESS 

Through six volunteer-led activities 

this program explores personal 

finance and students’ education 

and career options based on 

their skills, interests, and values. 

They come to understand the 

concept of self knowledge and the 

structure of the world of work as 

they consider education, career, 

and other life choices.

AMERICA WORKS 

This program provides students 

with examples of how business 

and entrepreneurship affected 

the economic development of 

the United States during the 19th 

century. They look at immigration, 

agriculture, the California gold rush 

and the telegraph. They also learn 

how industrialization increases 

productivity.

IT’S MY BUSINESS 

Designed to be presented after 

school, this program emphasizes 

entrepreneurship while providing 

a strong focus on social studies, 

reading, and writing skills. Students 

are encouraged to use critical 

thinking to learn entrepreneurial 

skills that support positive attitudes 

as they explore and enhance their 

career aspirations.

JOB SHADOW 

Every year, beginning in February, 

middle grades and high school 

students across America 

“shadow” workplace mentors, 

observing a normal day on the 

job. Students get an up-close 

look at how the skills learned in 

school relate to the workplace, 

creating the link between 

academics and careers. For 

employers, job shadowing offers 

both an introduction to the 

workforce of tomorrow and the 

opportunity to help students 

explore career options, while 

sharing what it takes to achieve 

goals. JA Job Shadow is the joint 

effort of a national coalition 

comprised of America’s Promise, 

Junior Achievement, and the US 

Department of Labor.

BETTER TOMORROW 

HIGH SCHOOL 

PROGRAMS 

Equating education with lifelong gains, Junior Achievement’s 

High School Programs invest in every student, providing them the 

economic skills and assets required to achieve their 

personal goals. 

JA’s high school programs bring volunteers from the community 

face to face with students for the simplest of human interaction– 

sharing. Classroom volunteers make economic concepts relevant, 

fuel the entrepreneurial spirit, and challenge students to excel. 

JA ECONOMICS 

This is a semester-length economics course taught 

by a certified teacher. Volunteers from the business 

community help the students relate economic 

concepts and business principles to real-life 

situations in the workplace. 

JA ENTREPRENEURIAL 

A new program that focuses on challenging 

students, through interactive classroom activities, 

to start their own entrepreneurial venture while 

still in high school. It provides useful, practical 

content to assist students with the transition 

to becoming productive, contributing members 

of society. 

JA COMPANY PROGRAM 

This is Junior Achievement’s original program. This 

program allows students in grades 9-12 to set up 

and operate a company of their own. Company 

members sell stock, elect officers, produce and 

market products and liquidate all in 12 weeks. It 

can operate during the school day, after school or 

in the evening. 

JA EXPLORING ECONOMICS 

This new program takes a complex subject 

and makes it accessible and fun for high school 

students through seven hands-on activities. The 

volunteer led sessions teach concepts such as 

supply and demand and inflation, and also teach 

students about the effect which governments and 

the individual have on the global economy and on 

the price of a loaf of bread. 

JA SUCCESS SKILLS 

This program focuses on developing students’ 

interpersonal effectiveness. Through an assessment, 

students identify the strengths and unique 

potentials of their interpersonal skills. 

They participate in mock interviews and work 

on a skills portfolio that can be used when 

applying for a job. It is presented by a volunteer 

over a 7-week period. 

JA TITAN 

Through a web-based simulation, students learn 

how to make pricing, production, marketing, 

capital investment and research and development 

decisions for their Holo-Generator companies. 

This program is designed to show the success or 

failure of a company based on how well key issues 

are managed. 

JA CAREERS WITH A PURPOSE 

This program introduces students to the 

importance of seeking careers that help them 

realize their life potential and noble purpose. It 

demonstrates the importance of positive values, 

life maxims, and ethical decision-making within 

the context of career and life decisions. 

JA PERSONAL FINANCE 

This program introduces students to the 

importance of making wise financial decisions. It 

demonstrates the importance of planning, goal 

setting, and thoughtful decision-making within 

context of personal financial decisions.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT 

Junior Achievement programs are presented by volunteers, 

dedicated men and women who bring their unique insight 

and inspiration to students throughout Northeastern 

New York. They transform the abstract into the practical, 

breathing life experience into textbooks and economic 

theories. 

They answer questions about the importance of 

education in the marketplace with information based 

upon their own successes and failures. They are personal 

role models, particularly for students who are from 

cultures and communities similar to their own. 

Junior Achievement business consultants are not 

required to have a specialized background beyond 

a willingness to give their time and energy. Equipped 

with Junior Achievement-prepared materials, they 

quickly lose any fear of being at the front of the class 

and become energized and inspired by their students’ 

youthful enthusiasm. All agree on one undeniable 

benefit: their partnership with Junior Achievement will 

create a stronger, smarter pool of future employees 

who will enhance America’s ability to compete in the 

global market. 

Junior Achievement can offer a rewarding volunteer 

opportunity in which you can gain as much as you give! 

At the elementary level, one can commit to five weekly, 

30-45 minute lessons. At the middle or high school level, 

it is 6-7 weekly lessons.

BUSINESS HALL OF FAME 

2011 

INDUCTEES 

A crowd of more than 500 friends, family and community 

supporters were on hand at the Albany Marriott to pay 

tribute to the Business Hall of Fame’s three newest members. 

The annual dinner and induction ceremony, presented by 

Junior Achievement and the Center for Economic Growth, 

was sponsored by: CG Power Solutions, General Electric, 

KeyBank, Massry Realty Partners, and the Times Union. 

The Hall of Fame crowd welcomed F. Michael Tucker, 

President & CEO for CEG who served as Master of 

Ceremonies for the evenings’ activities. 

Those in attendance witnessed three area visionaries 

and community leaders receive public recognition for 

their inspiring business leadership and their exemplary 

civic achievements. Entering the Business Hall of Fame on 

May 4, 2011 was: Daniel J. Hogarty, Jr., former Chairman, 

President & CEO Troy Savings Bank, Alain E. Kaloyeros, 

Ph.D., Professor, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive 

Officer, College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering 

University at Albany – SUNY and posthumously Donald 

R. Led Duke (1946-2010) Chairman, BBL Construction 

Services. The induction of these three individuals brings 

the total number of Hall of Fame entrants to forty-seven. 

Induction into the Tech Valley Business Hall of Fame is a 

preeminent business award for our region. As such, the

operating area of Junior Achievement

Since the event was founded by Junior Achievement of 

Northeastern New York, Inc., whose prime audience 

is youth, the honorees must also be outstanding role 

models for the students who learn about the values of 

free enterprise in Junior Achievement’s in-school and 

after-school programs, and youth in general who will be 

motivated, inspired and encouraged by the example set by 

these “Champions of Free Enterprise.”
