EARL-ISMS By Francine Hament Earl Annecston spent 40 years as a highly valued volunteer at the Jewish Home. He did just about everything in terms of enriching the lives of so many residents. I particularly remember Betty Kroll, who loved all the jokes and special food with which Earl would delight her. She called him “that nice man with so many interesting stories.” In fact, I was also her volunteer companion, and we managed to arrange her “escape” (as she called it) from her room to the garden café. Betty felt as though she hadn’t been able to see more than her four walls, but Earl arranged to get her to the café, where she marveled at seeing a tree after so many years! It is a tribute to Earl, with all his caring ways, that he brought so much joy to so many. Roses always arrived with Earl, who never missed a week handing them out to one and all. Besides all this goodness, given with such love, Earl became a bar mitzvah in the Jewish Home’s synagogue, the place where he also carried the Torah on any given Saturday. Earl was noted for his humor, his “Earlisms” as we called them, and his loving heart, that sadly gave out early in June. Visiting him in the hospital, I saw a man barely managing to deal with all his medical issues. As I gently planted a kiss on his cheek, I said, “Do you know who this is?” His humor still came through in his weak response: “Well, I hope it wasn’t from my son.” Earl-isms to the end … A memorial service for Earl was held on August 10 at Menorah Village, also known as Peninsula Del Rey, in Daly City, where he lived the last few years and was so highly regarded. Earl will be in my heart and memory forever. One of the last photos Fran Hament has of Earl Annecston, taken at the Home’s seder. WE MADE IT TO THE MUSEUM By Rudy Hooremans A few months ago, some of the residents of our Home took a trip to the Legion of Honor fine arts museum in Lincoln Park. As usual, a big bus transported us. The goal was to see an exhibition by a group of Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, depicting scenes of bodies of water. There were paintings by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Caillebotte, and several other famous artists – all with the common theme and hence the title of the exhibition, Impressionists on the Water. Many of the paintings showed rowboats and/or sailboats. Lucky for us and the volunteers who pushed us around, the entire exhibition was located on one floor. We are very grateful to Jewish Community Federation’s Senior Excursion Fund for giving us this opportunity. AT HOME 6 SEPTEMBER 2013

Kennedy International airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General Eric Holder said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction. “Al-Gebra is a problem for us,” the attorney general said. “They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. “They use secret code names like ‘X’ and ‘Y’ and refer to themselves as ‘unknowns,’ but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.” As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, “There are three sides to every triangle.” When asked to comment on the arrest, President Obama said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.” White House aides told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the president.
