all stars
Get ready to swing!
Join the Yardbird Suite All-Stars for a fabulous
tribute to the music of William “Count” Basie!
Riding on the tremendous success of
last year’s “Tribute to Duke Ellington”, the
Edmonton Jazz Society (EJS) is pleased to
present another exciting night of timeless
jazz.
CBC Radio will be recording this special show;
come out and take part in a live, dynamic
performance by some of the best musicians
on the Canadian jazz scene. Audience
response to CBC Radio’s broadcast of last
year’s Ellington tribute was fantastic, so CBC
Edmonton producer Dan Cherwoniak and
crew will once again be parked outside in the
CBC trailer, catching all the musical action for
later broadcast.
The Yardbird Suite is proud to showcase the
talents of our Edmonton-based All-Stars,
who make up a repertory small ensemble
of the highest calibre. With Tommy Banks
leading the way in the role of Basie, each All-
Star will play in a “musical chair” representing
a famous player from the Basie orchestras.
Hang on to your seat, this night is literally
going to swing with the best of them!
And thank you for your support! The EJS
is working hard to make this a continuing
project, because of the amazing musicians in
our city and because there is a vast repertoire
of small group recordings to draw from. Stay
tuned for future events featuring the music of
such luminaries as Dave Pell, Woody Herman,
“Shorty” Rogers, Manny Album and more.
George Blondheim Trio
When it comes to musical credentials, this
trio is second to none! Join George Blondheim
and friends for an intimate evening of
jazz stylings and musicianship that will be
sure to satisfy your jazzy soul.
Blondheim is not only one of Canada’s most
notable musicians, he is also one of our best
known and respected musical ambassadors.
He is recognized internationally as a composer,
producer, conductor and pianist; his
honours include two Gemini awards, a Genie
and three Leo Awards. As TV Guide puts it,
Blondheim’s resume “reads like a short novel,
having performed and written virtually
all styles of music in Canada, the USA, and
around the world.”
Though his musical career has taken him far
afield, Blondheim is just as comfortable coming
“home” to a small jazz venue like the Yardbird
Suite as he is in a concert hall or before
live TV cameras. Blondheim is an alumnus of
music and performing arts programs at the
University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan College
and the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts.
He also studied film scoring with Dr. Albert
Harris at the Dick Grove College of Music in
Los Angeles.
Blondheim has written music for many popular
movies (Bye Bye Blues, The Jewel of the
Nile, and more), several top TV shows (The
Cosby Show and Da Vinci’s Inquest, among
many others), and major sporting events, such
as the 1984 Summer Olympics (Los Angeles),
the 1988 Winter Olympics (Calgary) and the
Heritage Hockey Classic in Edmonton. He has
also collaborated with Canadian stars Tom
Cochrane, Spirit of the West, and k.d. lang on
their respective symphonic recordings, with
combined sales approaching triple platinum.
Blondheim appeared for many years on CTV
as talk show host Vicki Gabereau’s sidekick
and musical director.
Blondheim is a recipient of the “Canada 125
Commemorative Medal” for his contribution
to Canada and the world through music. He
was appointed to the board of the Cultural
Human Resources Council of Canada (CHRC)
and continues to donate time and resources
to a host of worthy causes.
Toronto-born bassist Kieran Overs has been
active on the Canadian music scene since
1970, first on guitar and electric bass and for
the past 32 years on acoustic bass. He is a
B.Mus. graduate of the Humber/BCOU Music
Program and holds a master’s degree from
McGill University. He also studied privately
with renowned Danish bassist Niels-Henning
Orsted Pedersen and arranger Rick Wilkins.
Overs is one of Canada’s most established
jazz artists. He has four recordings on the
Unity/Page label as leader/producer and
appears on more than 80 recordings as a
sideman. Overs was one of only eight jazz
artists selected to represent Canada on the
4-CD, 50-artist boxed set “HERE AND NOW” -
A Celebration of Canadian Music “, produced
by the Canada Council to commemorate the
fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations (released
world-wide in October 1995).
A profile of Overs’ career can be found in
Mark Miller’s book “The Miller Companion to
Jazz in Canada”. Of late, Overs has been touring
internationally with singers Sophie Milman
and Emilie-Claire Barlow. He is on the
adjunct faculty at both Humber College in
Toronto and Mohawk College in Hamilton.
Bob McLaren has played and recorded with
many Canadian jazz greats, such as Doug Riley,
Kirk MacDonald, Pat LaBarbara and Lorne
Lofsky, to name only a few. In addition, Bob
has played with numerous international jazz
stars, including Sam Noto, Eddie Daniels, Zoot
Sims, George Coleman, Tom Harrell and Randy
Brecker. In a long-running career as one of
Canada’s best jazz drummers, Bob has played
Harry Allen
with Tommy Banks
Get ready for a special evening with a jazz
master, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen!
Respected jazz journalist, Gene Lees,
writes,”Stan Getz was once asked his idea
of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His
answer was, ‘My technique, Al Cohn’s ideas,
and Zoot’s time.’ The fulfillment of that ideal
may well be embodied in thirty-year-old
Harry Allen.”
Well, he’s not thirty any more, but Allen’s
musical talent is standing the test of time
as he moves further into his 40s. Allen
has performed at jazz festivals and clubs
worldwide, frequently touring the United
States, Europe and Asia.
The Harry Allen - Joe Cohn Quartet won the
New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding
Jazz Combo Performance of 2006. The combo
was also nominated for Best Jazz Combo in
2006 by the Jazz Journalists Association.
Allen is a Swing Bros. recording artist, with
over thirty recordings to his name. Three of his
CDs have won Gold Disc Awards from Japan’s
Swing Journal Magazine. His CD “Tenors
Anyone?” won both the Gold Disc Award and
the New Star Award. Allen’s 1998 recording
“Eu Nao Quero Dancar” (I Won’t Dance) earned
second place as album of the year in a reader’s
poll conducted Swing Journal Magazine.
6 March/April 2009
Allen has performed with Rosemary Clooney,
Lester Quitzau
Trio
Are you ready to rock? (plus, whatever else
may happen!) In this night’s trio setting, fans
will get a first hand chance to listen to the
latest musical treasure being offered up by
one of Canada’s most inspiring musicians
– the intense, bluesy and innovative Lester
Quitzau.
This show will feature songs from Lester’s
latest recording, “The Same Light”. Appearing
on stage with Lester will be two “local
legends” with a solid national presence on
Canada’s jazz and music scenes, the alwaysmusical
and rhythmic Mike Lent on bass
and “master improviser” on drums, Sandro
Dominelli.
“The Same Light” includes sensitive, finelycrafted
songs showcasing Lester’s writing
skills, along with some soul-drenched blues
tunes sure to satisfy his longest-standing
fans. The CD captures and continues some of
the newer directions Lester began exploring
in 2008; as witnessed by fans who attended
his March 2008 show at the Yardbird. (Listen
to this show at www.cbc.ca/radio2/cod/
concerts/20080315quitz)
Technically, Lester’s newest tunes are
improvised instrumentals performed by
a trio, but to hear them is to experience
much more than that; overall, the songs
transcend limitations like “ jazz” or “folk” or
“roots” and express his vision of what he calls
“our planet’s fragile yet powerful essence”.
The CD ends with Pete Seeger’s “To My Old
Brown Earth”, performed as an unmistakably
heartfelt summing-up of all that Lester
stands for today.
Lester’s virtuosity as a guitarist and vocalist
have won him critical acclaim and the
admiration of his musical peers over the
course of a twenty-year career. As his many
fans will attest, Quitzau continues to lead
himself and others on an eclectic and
constantly evolving musical journey.
The LaBarbera
Brothers
The Edmonton Jazz Society is proud to
present brothers Pat and Joe LaBarbera for
two special nights of top-notch jazz! Both
nights will include riveting, high energy jazz,
featuring the “heavyweight” talents of Pat on
saxophone and the internationally-respected
Joe on drums.
Pat and Joe will be joined by the marvelous
Chris Andrew on piano and first-call bassist
Mike Lent.
Check out the full biographies for both Pat
and Joe at their respective pages on myspace.
com. Here are a few excerpts:
“Pat LaBarbera is considered one of the
finest saxophone soloists working within the
framework of John Coltrane’s principles. The
connection was most obvious when he worked
with Elvin Jones groups which began in 1975.
He studied with his father Joseph LaBarbera,
John LaPorta and Joe Henderson. LaBarbera
became best known for his solo work with the
bands of Buddy Rich (1967-1974), Louis Bellson,
Woody Herman and his own groups. He moved
to Toronto in 1974 and is a member of the
faculty at Humber College. A true intellectual
of improvisation, he has been among the key
members of the Toronto jazz scene for more
than 30 years. LaBarbera has played a major
role in the development of a generation of
Canadian saxophonists.”
“Joe LaBarbera is regarded by his peers
as a musical drummer and a supportive
accompanist. Jazz great Bill Evans summed it
up best when he said that ‘Joe is very dedicated
to playing quality music, and he’s willing to
make the concessions of dues toward that end.
He’s a top soloist and he does the right thing at
the right time.’
all original compositions in an acoustic jazz
quintet format. The music for this CD was
Nordic Sketches
The lands of the midnight sun and long winter
nights have long-inspired a rich musical output.
From the classical composers Edvard Grieg and
Jean Sibelius, to jazz musicians such as Jan Garbarek,
Esbjorn Svensson and Bobo Stenson, the
Nordic landscape has inspired a sonic backdrop
of depth and intensity to match.
Drawing upon themes from Scandinavian folk
music, the works of the great Nordic composers,
original compositions and improvisation, pianist
Tom King and bassist Jeff Johnson explore
the world of Nordic music in an evening of musical
sketches.
Pianist Tom King is fast becoming one of the
most sought-after and exciting figures on the
Alberta jazz scene. Bringing with him an accomplished
history in both the jazz and classical
realms, Tom’s playing merges fluid, virtuosic
technique with unbridled energy and introspective
poignancy.
was ranked as one of the top 20 jazz albums in
Canada in 2007 and was consistently in the top
10 for radio play in Canada and overseas.
Jeff has performed across North America and
played with great musicians such as P.J. Perry,
Brad Turner and Jack Semple, as well as sharing
the stage with jazz legends George Lewis
and the late Steve Lacy. Jeff holds a music degree
Andrew Trio
The Hutchinson Andrew Trio is a unique voice
on the Canadian jazz landscape. Over the
past five years this acoustic, piano-based trio
has become a regular fixture on the Western
Canadian jazz scene. They have performed
to enthusiastic crowds at jazz festivals in
Edmonton, Calgary, Canmore and Medicine
Hat. The trio plays regularly throughout the
year, with frequent engagements at popular
jazz clubs in both Edmonton and Calgary.
Although the trio’s music can be categorized
as contemporary acoustic jazz, it goes beyond,
mixing elements such as contemporary swing,
Latin, and acoustic groove to help form their
own distinct sound. Kodi and Chris list artists
such as Brad Mehldau, David Kikoski, Robert
Glasper and Kenny Werner as some of their
influences.
On their sophomore album “Music Box”
(Chronograph Records), Chris and Kodi are
joined by Canadian jazz legend, Ralph Bowen,
on tenor saxophone. “Music Box” was released
in January 2008 and climbed high on radio jazz
charts across Canada.
In 2007, the trio competed for the Galaxie Rising
Star Award and GM Grand Prix Award on the
mainstage at the 2007 Montreal International
Jazz Festival.
The Trio’s debut album, “Lost But Not Forgotten”,
earned a 2006 Western Canadian Music Award
nomination in the Outstanding Jazz Recording
category. The album also received significant
airplay across Canada, staying in CKUA Radio’s
top 10 for over a month and in the number
three spot on Calgary’s CJSW radio for over
three months. In addition, CBC Radio put the
album into regular rotation.
CBC recorded the Trio live at the 2006 Canmore
International Jazz Festival. The Trio’s composition
“3 Corners of Emotion” was featured in the
Decidedly Jazz Danceworks production, “Bulla!”,
which toured Canada over the summer of
2005.
