Key Performance Targets 2007/8<br />

The following Key Performance<br />

Targets (KPTs) have been set for<br />

the Chief Executive of the Met<br />

Office <strong>and</strong> announced in<br />

Parliament for the financial year<br />

(FY) 2007/8. The targets are<br />

designed to drive continued<br />

improvements in the Agency’s<br />

performance <strong>and</strong> are as follows:<br />

KPT 1. Forecast Accuracy<br />

To achieve at least three out of the four following forecast accuracy measures. Any<br />

failed element will be required to meet the same level as the FY 06/07 outturn for<br />

the overall KPT to be met:<br />

a. Improve the forecasting skill, using the combined Numerical Weather Prediction<br />

(NWP) Index, to at least 122.4.<br />

b. More skilfully predict whether precipitation will occur, at selected locations, to<br />

achieve a skill score of at least 0.403.<br />

c. Predicting maximum temperature at selected locations to within 2 degrees<br />

accuracy 84.8% of the time.<br />

d. Predicting minimum temperature at selected locations to within 2 degrees<br />

accuracy 82.0% of the time.<br />

KPT 2. Business Profitability<br />

To achieve a Business Profitability target of £4.3 million.<br />

KPT 3. Return on Capital Employed<br />

In line with Treasury requirements to achieve a Return on Capital Employed (ROCE)<br />

of at least 3.5%.<br />

KPT 4. Support to wider Government goals<br />

To deliver the outputs of the Customer-Supplier Agreements (CSA) for Public<br />

Weather Services, Defence <strong>and</strong> Defra within the tolerances agreed with the<br />

customers <strong>and</strong> defined in the CSAs.
