Maithree has been 

rendering its service 

since 1994 and right 

now is reaching out to 

over 440 such persons 

through 18 centres – 9 

special schools and 9 

post school units located 

in and around Chennai. 

Maithree provides an array 

of services encompassing 

Summer at its peak, kidney stone disease also in their peak. 

Throughout the world the 

incidences of kidney stone 

disease also increasing, 

mainly due climate and 

the dietary changes of the 

individuals.one of the main 

reason for kidney stones 

are not drinking enough 

water and eating more junk 

foods, majority of the time 

we may not be able to find 

the aetiology of the stone 

disease, less frequently 

we may find the calcium, 

Uric acid, and oxalate 

levels in our body will have 

an abnormal levels which 

may predisposes for stone 

disease. 

Symptoms and signs 

The patients with stone in 

the urinary tract present 

with severe pain in the 

flanks and they will be 

colicky in nature. The 

symptoms are due to 

the size or the site of 

the stone in the urinary 

tract. The sizes may vary 

from 2-3mm to 5-6cm 

and sometime the whole 

kidney may be replaced by 

the stones called stag horn 

calculus. The stones in the 

kidney can cause urinary 

tract infection,blood in the 

urine ,if it is not detected 

or treated may end up in 

kidney failure. How to detect 

the entire life span of the 

child/person with special 

needs. 

Maithree celebrated its 

21st Annual day on Friday 

the 6th of March, 2015 

from 4:00 p.m onwards 

at Kamarajar Arangam, 

Teynampet. 

“Varnajalam” being the 

theme of the Annual Day, 

a colourful presentation of

be detected. Sometimes 

the X-ray may not show 

the stones like Uric acid, 

cysteine.We may need CT 

scan to detect the stones. 

With good CT scan almost 

we can detect 99% of 

stones in the urinary tract. 

The advantage of CT 

scan is that it can give the 

exact location, size and 

density (Hounsfield unit) 

of the stone which is the 

main factors to decide the 

treatment options. 

How to treat? 

Once diagnosed as stones 

in the urinary tract, it has 

to be treated otherwise 

end up in renal damage by 

blocking the urinary tract 

or the source of recurrent 

urinary tract infection. 

As mentioned earlier the 

treatment options depends 

on the factors like site, 

size, density ,presence of 

obstruction and infection. 

In majority of times smaller 

stones of 4-6 mm will pass 

out from the urinary tract 

by nature with simple 

conservative treatments 

with medication(70-80%) 

Even the smaller stones 

will not come out and 

produce severe pain and 

infection needs surgical 

treatment. 

Treatment options are 

1 observation 

2 Extracorporeal 

lithotripsy(ESWL) 

3 Intracorporeal lithotripsy 

(Rigid and Flexible 

Ureteroscopy with 

pneumatic or LASER 

energy) 

4 Percutaneous lithotripsy 

(PCNL) 

5 Laparoscopic stone 

removal 

6 Open surgery 

Traditionally open surgery 

(pyelolithotomy or 

ureterolithotomy)has been 

considered a treatment 

for kidney stones (>3cm) 

,with the advancement in 

technology in endoscopy 

and the lithotripsy technics 

the open surgery has 

been obsolete from the 

treatment options and 

almost all stones and 

any sizes can be treated 

endoscopically .since 

the stone disease are 

recurrent disease we 

cannot do open surgery 

every time,it has to 

be treated endoscopy 

methods without damage 

to the kidneys 

How to prevent? 

Stones in the kidneys are 

likely to recur and it needs 

regular attention otherwise 

end up in permanent 

kidney damage. If the 

person is producing 

stones again and again 

needs metabolic work up 

to analyse the blood for 

calcium, phosphorous, 

Uric acid and oxalates, 

citrates level in our body 

and if any abnormality 

detected can be corrected 

with medications. 

Another important factor 

in stone formation is not 

drinking enough water 

and taking too much junk 

food. By taking adequate 

water (3-4 litre) per day 

and avoiding or reducing 

certain foods contain more 

calcium and oxalates , 

regular visit to the urologist 

the recurrence of the 

stones in the kidney can 

be prevented there by 

reducing the damage to 

the kidney and prevent 

kidney failures.

Removable Partial Denture 

A denture is a removable 

replacement for missing 

teeth and surrounding 

tissues. Two types of 

dentures are available 

complete and partial 

dentures. Complete 

dentures are used when 

all the teeth are missing, 

while partial dentures are 

used when some natural 

teeth remain. 

A removable partial 

denture usually consists 

of replacement teeth 

attached to a pink or 

gum-colored plastic 

base, which is sometimes 

connected by metal 

framework that holds the 

denture in place in the 

mouth. Not only does 

a partial denture fill in 

the spaces created by 

missing teeth, it prevents 

other teeth from changing 

position. 

New dentures may feel

a little odd or loose for 

a few weeks until the 

muscles of the cheeks 

and tongue learn to keep 

them in place and you get 

comfortable inserting and 

removing them. Also, it 

is not unusual for minor 

irritation or soreness to 

occur and for saliva flow 

to increase when you first 

start wearing dentures, 

but these problems will 

diminish as the mouth 

adjusts. 

Eating with new 

dentures will take a little 

practice and may be 

uncomfortable for some 

wearers for a few weeks. 

To get used to the new 

denture, start with soft 

foods cut into small 

pieces. Chew slowly 

using both sides of your 

mouth. As you get used to 

new dentures, add other 

foods until you return to a 

normal diet. Be cautious 

with hot or hard foods and 

sharp-edged bones or 

shells. And, avoid foods 

that are extremely sticky 

or hard. You should also 

avoid chewing gum while 

you wear the denture. 

Also, don't use toothpicks 

while wearing dentures.
