Dear Forum Attendee:
Welcome to the 2015 IBI Annual Forum. We are pleased to host the Forum again this year at the Fairmont Hotel, one of
San Francisco’s grandest. Enjoy our beautiful city. We have a variety of exciting new sessions, resources and events for our
attendees, so I’d like to highlight a few items not to be missed.
We’ve expanded the capability of our mobile Forum app this year, so be sure to download it. The app not only has all the meeting
materials integrated into it, but the capability to connect you with all other attendees. After downloading the app by visiting
app.core-apps.com/ibiforum15 or searching “IBI Forum” on your smartphone app store, you can personalize your session schedule,
download presentation materials, and exchange contact information without having to walk around squinting at name tags.
This year’s Forum will focus on a critical issue for employers and their supplier partners: given the rapidly changing healthcare
environment, how can employers create and maintain a healthy, high-performing, at-work and productive workforce? We are
especially fortunate to have such a wide variety of speakers joining us this year to address these critical issues. We’ve emphasized
practical solutions that can be taken back to your offices and implemented, while also exploring innovative strategies that are
pushing the envelope and helping the field evolve.
In 2015, IBI is expanding ways to reach and engage with our members and we want the Forum to serve as a launching pad for our
additional member initiatives. In addition to the Forum, members can look forward to seeing regional conferences, webinars with
leading professionals, diverse case studies, industry-focused benchmarking groups, and research driven by member needs.
We hope you enjoy the Forum and San Francisco to the fullest. I know it will create opportunities for you to learn, share,
and grow in our common goal to improve the lives of our workforces and our businesses.
Today, there is more uncertainty than ever about how employers will manage workforce
health and productivity. IBI’s Board of Directors met last summer to discuss the volatility
of the health and productivity landscape and the diversity of employers’ options. This
preconference workshop will focus on three aspects of the Board’s discussion: (1) forces
influencing how employers manage workforce health and productivity, (2) implications
for how employers with a more “traditional” approach to healthcare will proceed and (3)
implications for how employers with a more “consumer-centric” approach will proceed.
Former IBI Board Chairman Chris McSwain will moderate the panel; panel members will
include Kathy McAlpine from Kraft; Gary Earl from Anthem-Wellpoint; Tammy Green from
Providence Health Systems and Brad Johnson from Sedgwick CMS. The audience is invited
to participate fully in the conversation.
As employers consider the array of strategies and tactics used to control healthcare costs,
private exchanges are emerging as a focal point. The role of private exchange offerings in
workforce health and productivity management has not been explicitly determined, and is a
subject of some debate. This session will share expert perspectives regarding the role that
private exchanges may play in supporting workforce health management efforts. Each of the
panelists has a unique perspective, and together will provide an insightful look at the role of
private exchanges. By directly addressing the critical employer decision-making process, this
presentation will summarize available research and describe how workforce health, wellbeing,
and performance can be further enhanced in the setting of private exchanges.
occur. These novel technological advancements include telemedicine, real time visual
connectivity, Google glass, wearable monitoring devices, internet connected bio sensors,
three dimensional printers, and robotic devices. Panelists will speak to how technology
can expand healthcare coverage and service to more Americans in addition to how these
alternative delivery models offer opportunities for providers to connect with their patients
in a different way. This session brings together experts to discuss trends in innovation and
the measurements used to evaluate the impact of new technologies on cost, quality, and
• Karen Trumbell English, Partner, Spring Consulting Group
• Gene Lanzoni, Assistant Vice President, Market Intelligence, Guardian
• Jane Ryan, Return to Work Section Head, Mayo Foundation
With the implementation of Affordable Care Act reforms and the release of ADAAA final
regulations adopted by the EEOC in the past two years, the absence management field
has changed greatly. This session will present findings from the 2015 Guardian Absence
Management Activity Index℠ and Study, a Spring Consulting Group commissioned survey,
as well as an accompanying metric developed in 2012 to monitor changes in employer
engagement and absence management-related activities. By providing insight into the current
absence management landscape, this presentation will explain the series of steps employers
of all sizes can take to get started on their absence management journey and build an
effective, long-standing program over time.
Workshop B: Using Consumer Activation to Better Understand Consumer Behavior
and Outcomes
• Craig Kurtzweil, Senior Vice President, Analytic Innovations, UnitedHealth Group
Recognizing the impact consumer behavior has on health care and related costs, Unum and
UnitedHealth Group took aim at consumer health activation with their Consumer Activation
Index (CAI), a tool used for measuring decision making and short-term disability exposure.
In a study of 17 customers with 270k members, the CAI was used to determine if individuals
make an optimal clinical, financial or service choice when faced with a health care decision.
The CAI navigates individuals through 51 decision points to complete its assessment. By
better understanding consumer behavior, members can then seek to modify behavior to
achieve better health. The discussion will highlight how CAI works and its results in relation
to short term disability and productivity.
Workshop C: Breaking Through: Communicating for Engagement and Behavior Change
• Janice Burnham, CEO, ROC Group
• Jack Nightingale, Vice President, Healthcare Practice, Benfield – Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
• Firky Isaac, M.D., Vice President of Global Health Services, Johnson & Johnson
Obesity is a top health and productivity concern as well as a complex and challenging
condition that most employers have found difficult to address effectively. Employers that
want to move their employee populations to healthier weights are looking for proven weight
management strategies that go beyond the standard approaches to employee engagement
and support. This session will present key findings of an employee engagement research
study focused on obesity management, along with a case study of a leading employer—
Johnson & Johnson—that has been a pioneer in implementing new integrated, value-based
solutions, measuring their results, and deploying them across their organization.
Workshop E: Fit for Work in a Physically Demanding Environment: A Comprehensive
Approach to Wellness at Goldcorp’s Wharf Mine
• Colleen Broersma, President, 3:1 Corporate HPM Solutions
• Larry Bakke, Administrative Manager, Wharf Mine
In the fall of 2011, Wharf Mine partnered with 3:1 Corporate HPM Solutions to launch a new
wellness program for its employees. The project aimed for a comprehensive approach to
wellness by integrating traditional occupational safety, prevention, and health protection
efforts with health promotion. Key components of the program included individual health
assessments, health and safety education, nutrition, core strengthening, stress and sleep
management, wearable devices for tracking progress, and follow-up sessions. Speakers
will discuss how these components led to measurable successes in heightened employee
efficiency, reductions in serious health conditions, improved health risk status, and reduced
worker’s compensation costs related to slips, trips, falls and overexertion.
explore a telemedicine care option. Telemedicine offers hard-to-reach patients an alternate
channel of care from any location without the delay of scheduling or taking time off from
work. Speakers will discuss the value based plan design of Penske’s telemedicine program as
well as its results due to productivity savings and employee satisfaction. This presentation
will address innovative remote approaches to health care as well as the key elements of an
effective deployment strategy that achieves maximal adoption and impact.
Workshop B: FMLA & ADA: Avoiding Pitfalls and Reducing Absences
• Matt Morris, VP, AbsenceResources, ComPsych
• Bert Cleary, Senior HR Manager, Compensation & Benefits, Welch’s
Increasing overlap between FMLA and ADA has presented employers with the question
of how to address new regulations while maintaining compliance and managing absence.
ComPsych will present a case study illustrating how employers can reduce absences by as
much as 30 percent by focusing on important changes in FMLA law, interpreting what the
EEOC’s “rigorous enforcement” of ADA laws means to employers, proactively identifying
FMLA absences and other applicable leaves that may require ADA analysis, integrating
FMLA and ADA processes to improve efficiency and reduce risk, and instituting new
corporate policies and procedures that will help reduce overall absence.
Workshop A: “Fixing Stress”: Informing Health, Productivity & Wellness
• Robert Simon Siegel, CEO, Global Optimal Health Group
• John White, M.D., Chief Medical Advisor, Diagnos-Techs
• Eric Hatzenbuehler, Health & Productivity Consultant
• Tamela Thomas, Wellness Manager, Washington Athletic Club in Seattle
In this session, speakers will present the essential components of practical solutions to
the universal challenge of stress. In delivering a combination of new standards, precise
diagnostic measures, and prevention essentials, speakers will provide attendees insight
on the potential value of stress management as a means to bettering a workforce’s
health and productivity. This session will also focus on the strategic implementation of
innovative stress and wellness management into the workplace. By defining “stress”
as a physiologically foundation of wellness, this session will help attendees use illness
prevention, healthcare costs, productivity, absenteeism, presenteeism to inform exciting
new “health-producing” skills.
Workshop B: Partnership and Prevention: Utilizing Different Health Networks to Prevent
Disease and Promote Performance
• John Sinnot, M.D. Chairman, Internal Medicine, USFHealth
• Antonio Iglesias, Pharm.D., Regional Medical Director, Pfizer, Inc.
Approximately 50,000 adults die each year in the US from vaccine-preventable diseases
such as influenza and pneumonia. To confront this problem, Pfizer collaborated with the
University of South Florida (USFHealth) and Tampa General Hospital to review the use of
vaccines as a method of improving workforce health. The first step in this collaboration
was to model the direct and indirect benefit costs associated with Community Acquired
Pneumonia (CAP). This session will reveal the economic burden of CAP and the advantages
of partnerships to deter CAP incidents. Presenters will discuss the health system’s
direct and indirect benefit costs associated with CAP and annual cost estimates for the
organization’s health, sick leave/absence, short-term disability (STD), and group life
insurance benefit programs. Speakers will then explore how the expansion of employee
coverage for vaccines in partnership with pharmacy networks worked to improve the overall
health and productivity of affected workforces.
Workshop C: Health and Productivity Management Guided by a Workforce’s
Professional, Social, and Emotional Wellbeing
• Jim Purvis, VP, Well-Being Improvement Design, Healthways
• Elizabeth Glenn-Bottari, Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Integrative Health,
St. Joseph Health
Healthways partnered with St. Joseph’s Health to better understand and improve employee
well-being. Speakers will discuss a program to address high claims costs and instances
of absenteeism and presenteeism. Healthways leveraged St. Joseph Health’s Choose
Well brand and developed custom campaigns for each ministry to maximize employee
engagement and participation in the Healthways Well-Being Assessment. This survey
measured more than just the physical health of employees, it also identified the impact that
work environment and social, emotional and community well-being had on their overall
well-being as well. Through robust data analytics, Healthways identified key priorities for
improvement and this session will discuss the program’s approach, implementation, and
ADAAA Landscape
• David Lea, Regional Practice Leader, Reliance Standard Life Insurance
• Lesley Gee, Senior Manager, Global Benefits, YAHOO Inc.
• Laurie Brednich, Director, Employee Benefits, GoDaddy, Inc.
With the advent of the ADAAA in 2008, the Americans with Disabilities Act brought
change to disability and leave management. This session will focus on helping employers
navigate the landscape of the new ADAAA regulations and EEOC enforced employer
compliance, whether through self-administered or outsourced ADA programs. Speakers
will discuss available data and the results of a fully outsourced ADA administration program
12 months post-implementation. They will focus on how this program aimed to ensure
compliance, improve productivity, and reduce overall exposure.
Workshop E: Tying Educational Outcomes to Good Health
• Jon Harris-Shapiro, President, Continuance Health Solutions
• David Hines, Director, Employee Benefits, Metro Nashville Public Schools
• Patt McCarver, Director, Vanderbilt Health at MNPS, Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt and Continuance Health Solutions (CHS) partnered with Metro Nashville Public
Schools (MNPS) to create onsite patient-centered medical homes and engagement plans for
their teachers. Six years post-implementation, 40% of teachers consider the worksite clinics
their medical home. Speakers from MNPS, CHS, and Vanderbilt will discuss the program’s
integration of medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, and worker’s compensation services, as well
as their plans to expand the scope of care to include health coaching and behavioral health.
Presenting three years of results, speakers will discuss how they’re using data on student
academic achievement to proactively manage the health of their teacher population.
Health Claims in Call Centers
• Deborah LaBonar, Ph.D., Leader, Absence Analytics, Aon Hewitt
• Blessy John, Project Manager, Global Benefits Team, Discover Financial Services
This presentation will share how a 14,000 life financial services company with a primarily
call center population achieved reductions in both incidence and duration of mental disorder
disability claims. By applying an integrated, strategic approach to reducing mental health
claims, the organization reduced the total number of annual days lost by 34%. Presenters
will discuss how interventions made by on-site EAP counselors and behavioral health
specialists helped employees find professional mental health services and achieve a timely
and healthy return to work.
as a group for final plenary sessions after these workshops.
Workshop A: Delivering Value Based Solutions through Quality Partnership and
Transparency
• Joseph Cacchione, M.D. Chairman, Heart & Vascular Institute Strategy and Operations,
Cleveland Clinic
• Al Rapp, VP, Benefits, UPS
• Geoff Kilgore, SVP, Account Management, Change Healthcare
Cleveland Clinic and employer panelists will discuss their goal of creating a new definition of
value that includes quality outcomes, episodic pricing, reduced disability claims, faster return
to work times, improved patient-reported outcomes (measured up to one year post op), and
built-in engagement programs to drive utilization to high-performing networks. Speakers will
share the results of this program and its effect on presenteeism and productivity, as well as
absence, sick leave, short-term disability, and medical and pharmacy costs.
Workshop B: Playing the Triple Role of an Employer, Provider, and Educator:
A Self-Insured Benefit Plan
• Ron Loeppke, M.D., Vice Chairman, U.S. Preventive Medicine
• T. Warner Hudson, M.D., Medical Director, UCLA Health System and Campus
In this session, speakers will review UCLA’s major health initiative as an employer, provider,
educator, and participant in a self-insured benefit plan. UCLA Health was presented with
a unique opportunity to transform healthcare through the delivery of the Triple Aim—a
means of accepting leadership as an employer and healthcare provider to enhance the health
and performance of its workforce. In launching several innovative initiatives, UCLA Health
demonstrated material results: reducing healthcare service utilization through the Primary
Care Innovation Model (PCIM), increasing employee engagement through a Value-based
Care, Person Journey Model for employees in the UCLA health plan (in partnership with U.S.
Preventive Medicine), and decreasing workers’ comp costs through its WorkStrong program.
Speakers will discuss the health system redesign as well as integration, capacity growth, preprimary
care, telemedicine, and home services.
Workshop C: Investing in Human Capital for Wellbeing and Productivity
• Jeremy Watson, Wellness Product Owner, Humana
• Matthew Bowdy, Outcome Strategist, Humana
• Waleed Bahouth, Director, Associate Health and Well-being, Humana
• Carlos Mora, Ph.D., Research Scientist, Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship,
University of Michigan, Ross School of Business
Humana, in cooperation with the University of Michigan and the Integrated Benefits Institute
(IBI), has developed a framework that explores the relationships between well-being,
productivity loss and medical costs. This session will share Humana’s work in understanding
how organizations can develop a robust long-term human capital strategy by combining
multiple elements of traditional health benefits, worker costs, employee engagement, and
behavioral economics. Speakers will discuss how Humana aimed to help employers better
understand their populations through segmentation and will also address how employers
targeted individual employees and group needs simultaneously.
Workshop D: Low Back Pain: A Major Employer Uses Guidelines to Manage Quality,
Costs and Outcomes
• Harris Allen, Ph.D., Founder & Principal, Harris Allen Group
• Wayne Burton, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, American Express
Workshop D: Low Back Pain: A Major Employer Uses Guidelines to Manage Quality,
Costs and Outcomes (continued)
Up to 84% of the general population has been found to report low back pain (LBP) at some
point during their lifetime. This session will focus on a recent study by a major self-insured
employer to cultivate evidence on issues key to a successful program focusing on illness/
injury prevention, reduction of workers’ compensation claims, and disability and healthcare
cost savings. This study longitudinally tracked episodes of three types of ICD-9 diagnosis
code-identified back problems from 2001-2009 and found that care consistent with 10 of
11 guidelines was associated with lower total costs. Speakers will review how approaches
marked by more intensive resource use and lower guideline consistency were linked to poorer
LBP quality care, worse patient/employee outcomes, and greater direct and indirect costs.
Implications for employer involvement in guideline cost effectiveness will be discussed.
Workshop E: Redesigning to Better Manage Absence and Disability
• Tyler Amell, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer, StaffRelay
• Dave Keen, Executive Director, FH Workplace Health & Provincial WH Call Centre,
Fraser Health
Fraser Health, a Canadian organization with 24,000 employees, worked with StaffRelay to create
a program to better approach and manage absence and disability. Through an extensive redesign
process, a comprehensive electronic employee health record, an Enhanced Disability Management
Program (EDMP), and an automated attendance reporting solution, Fraser Health has produced a
return on investment of $28 million in decreased LTD and other disability costs. This session will
detail positive impacts on absence, sick leave, STD and WC, as well as higher participation rates.
What Every Employer Needs to Know—Key Success Factors for Hiring People
with Disabilities: A Collaborative Research Study with the University of Kansas
• Mike Dunst, AVP, National Practice Leader Absence Management, The Hartford
• Oswald Mondejar, SVP, Mission and Advocacy, Partners Health System
• Michael Wehmeyer, Ph.D., Professor of Special Education; Senior Scientist and Co-
on Disability at University of Kansas
• Sandi Boller, VP, Human Resources, US Bank
• Ann Kuhnen, M.D., Medical Director, Group Benefits and Workers’ Compensation, The Hartford
With the changes in the ADAAA, awareness around the importance of—and requirements
for—employing people with disabilities continues to grow, but the understanding of the
opportunity has yet to take root across the business landscape. Myths and misconceptions
remain among employers for whom this is still new and unchartered territory. In an attempt
to discover and define the underlying patterns framing successful working environments
for those with disabilities, The Hartford has partnered with the research team at the
nationally recognized Beach Center on Disability at The University of Kansas. This session
discusses how to impact the future workforce based on recent independent research by The
University of Kansas. The session will focus on motivational factors affecting performance,
development, and retention. Speakers will discuss their successful program results related
to recruiting, developing, and retaining abled and disabled employees. Speakers will share
their findings on self-determination as a predictor of success in the workplace as well as
behavioral findings that measure employment success for employees with disabilities.
