Umbrellas
Firstly, allow me to please take a second to welcome all members of the Coolum Beach
Christian College community. If you are a new or seasoned (that sounds much more
positive than ‘old’, doesn’t it?) we welcome you and look forward to a year of combined
effort between your home and your school in helping your child to achieve his or her highest
potential. There can be no nobler goal than this.
In mentioning the College community, I would like to take another moment to go to a very
personal level and thank everyone in this community for their support during the end of last
year as our family went through the crisis of a house fire. We were very touched at all of the
many and various ways in which people reached out to help us, and truly appreciate all that
everyone did during that period. It was certainly not an easy period for us but the loving
kindness and genuine concern of so many in our school community touched us dearly. For
those whom we haven’t caught up with we managed to be back together as a family by
Christmas Eve and are slowly building back to a ‘home’ feeling in our new house. We thank
God firstly that no one in our family was injured or killed.
How devastating it was to then see the seemingly sequential destruction of community after
community from the top of the country to the deep south of Tasmania. Naturally our hearts
go out to all who have been affected. It has been equally refreshing to see the efforts being
made by different members of the school community to raise funds for these victims as they
go through the long process of rebuilding. We strongly pray that cyclone Yaris des not bring
a second wave of flooding.
One very simple principle I have learnt with our long, wet summer has been
that even if it rains all day, if I stay under a roof I don’t get wet. The roof
works like a massive umbrella. It doesn’t stop the rain, but stops the effect of
that rain. This is so much like the umbrella of God’s love and care. By
staying faithfully under His umbrella we can continue to survive in a world
which is not an easy place to live in.
If I had to give any advice on preparing for a major house fire, this is what I would say:
1. Have a copy of all of your important documents in a separate location with a trusted
friend or relative.
2. Secure originals in a fire-proof safe or at least a metal box.
3. Store items in plastic storage containers without cracks in the lids (down low will stop
them from melting, but up high would obviously be better in a flood).
4. Back up your digital photos on an external hard drive and leave that in a separate
location, or, if you prefer, store online somewhere safe.
5. Don’t leave laptop chargers plugged in at night time. The forensic investigators are
convinced this was the cause of our fire.
6. Be equally paranoid with mobile phone chargers. Apparently these little items
frequently start house fires.
7. Get photoelectric smoke detectors. The first indication to our neighbours was not the
incessant howling of our smoke detectors (which both had been tested recently and
were in working order) but the windows exploding as the house erupted in flames.
The ‘ionizing’ smoke detectors bought off the shelf are great if the toast is burning,
but do not detect the smoke generated by burning household items.
I look forward to our year as a community at Your School—Coolum Beach Christian
College.

Meet the Teacher Night
Next Tuesday (February the 8th) we will be holding our annual Meet the
Teacher Night. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to meet with
teachers and other parents and get a picture of the teacher’s proposed
program for the year.
A timetable will be sent out before the day, enabling parents with more
than one child to attend multiple meetings.
These evenings are not intended to be parent-teacher interviews. Should
any parents wish to discuss last semester’s report cards they are invited
to make an interview at a mutually convenient time with the teacher
concerned.
Extreme Weather Procedure
With the recent high rainfalls and tropical cyclone Yasi heading for
Queensland, it is appropriate to review our school extreme weather
procedure. Should there be a need to close the college, the following
procedure will be followed (where it is safe and feasible to do so): a
decision will be made before 7am wherever possible; bus drivers will be
notified; Rhema FM (106.5 FM) and Mix 91.9 will be notified and a
message of the closure placed in the announcements section of the
school website, www.cbcc.qld.edu.au.
If there is a need to close the College during a school day all parents will
be contacted by phone and, again, a message will be placed in the
announcements section of the webpage. If at any time parents are
concerned and wish to withdraw students due to specific individual
circumstances they are encouraged to do so by contacting the office and
signing the student out using the normal sign out procedure.
Swimming Lessons and Interschool Sport Begin
Thursday the 3rd of February marks the beginning of swimming lessons
for all students from Year One to Year Seven. Students will need to have
the following items: togs (one piece for girls), rash shirt, footwear, towel
and sunscreen. Students may also like to bring goggles.
As part of the North District Sport Association, students in Year Nine will
begin their interschool team sport competition this Thursday with our
school contributing to the Basketball draw. Next term Year 8 students will
represent the school in Basketball also.
Mathletics and Spellodrome
Late last year our school began a trial of the Mathletics program. It was
so successful that it has been implemented across the school this year.
This web-based program provides teachers with some amazing ways of
controlling and monitoring student activity and achievement. Students
have a high level of engagement with this program. Last year in one week
our Year Four class was rated number forty in the world and twenty-ninth
in the country.
This year the producers of Mathletics have released a new program
called Spellodrome. We have been offered the chance this year to
register our students for this excellent program for only five dollars - one
tenth of the normal cost. Teachers will be sending details of this out to
parents.
Record Breaking Swim Carnival
Each year the CBCC swimming carnival is held at the start of the year to
enable all new students to have the opportunity to compete and perhaps
go to the District competition.
The weather was perfect (as opposed to the next day which was wet and
drizzly). This year many records were broken whilst others were
absolutely shattered. These were:
Medley
13 year old Alicia Gaudry
On the day Peter and Lyn Barnard and Tony Thompson combined forces
to provide a sausage sizzle. $106.50 was raised and all proceeds went
to the flood relief appeal. We would like to thank all of the parents who
came along, the staff who worked tirelessly (assisted by many of our
fantastic parents) and the students who applied themselves so well.
Some hotly contested relays saw many changes on the score sheet.
Each house was neck and neck with their participation points, however,
sheer points for places meant the final competition went to Gold House
School banking day Thursday. Contact Lisa
