Welcome Back
I am so glad to welcome you and your family back to school for the start of Term Three
and the second semester. I am very excited about this term and I really cannot overemphasise
my joy that you and your family are part of CBCC!!
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the new families who have joined us this
term - we trust your time at the College will be a time of immense blessing to you and
your family.
A lot is happening around the school as the Library and Multi-Purpose building take
shape, Stage Two of the oval becomes usable and the new sewage treatment plant
nears completion. Things certainly didn’t sit idly over the holidays.
Last week I was wondering how we as a community could get together more often, but
realised there are already a number of times when this will happen this term. We will
have Athletics carnival at the end of next week (Friday 30th July), then the Fete (thank
you Julia for deciding to hold an election on Fete Day!!), and then, probably my favourite
day of the year - Grandparents and Special Friend’s Day. If our Mini-Concert in the last
week of last term is any indicator, we have some fantastic entertainment before us at
these events.
As the Library progresses we will also be working towards our special opening ceremony
and celebration which, all going well, will be early next term.
We did have one major (but good) problem come our way over the holidays. Due to the
generosity of one of the Coast T.A.F.E. organisations we now have over one hundred
and fifty computers waiting to be deployed into classrooms. The first problem this caused
was where to store so many computers. We have solved that problem, but are now
looking to what we are going to do about operating system licensing, software etc. We
may need to have a computer nerd working bee one Saturday.
I look forward to catching up with you and your family this term, if not during our day to
day business, then at one of the functions that are taking place.
Yours in His Service,
Chris Andrews
Parent/Teacher Interviews
With this newsletter you will have received a Parent/Teacher Interview booking form. We
have set aside next Tuesday (July 27th) for interviews. Please make sure you complete
and return the forms so that teachers are able to confirm appointment times with you.
FDFTFDF
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the Free Dress For The Fete Day
Fridays last term. They are proving to be a fun way to get the items we need for the Fete
(which is now on election day!). This Friday our FDFTFDF item is, again, wrapped lollies.
So, if your child would like to come in free dress this Friday, they will need to bring a bag
of individually wrapped lollies (i.e. Fantales etc) or a gold coin donation. Thank you.

8yrs teaching experience
All styles of music
Beginners to advanced
Cert 3 in Music Tuition
Hello to all parents and students at
Coolum Beach Christian College.
My name is Eric Simon and I am delighted
to hear that I will be teaching at
your school very soon. I currently am a
teacher in Gympie ay Victory College
and also privately, and I am moving
down to the coast very soon. My family
has owned the local music store for over
20 years now and I have been playing
drums and guitar since I was a child.
My passion in life is music and teaching
this gift to others, helping them to discover
the talents that they have in music.
My music lessons are individual and will
be held during school hours costing $20
per lesson. Each lesson is 30min long
and includes teaching of music theory
as well as practical application on the
instrument.
Looking forward to teaching with you
and being part of this great college.
Shop for Sunshine Kids
Many thanks to everyone who submitted receipts either into the office or
directly to the Sunshine Plaza in the recent Shop for Sunshine Kids
Competition. Due to all of your efforts we managed to come in 8th place
out of the thirty schools that competed. The good news is that we
received $1000 for our efforts.
Tutoring on Thursday
If your child is needing extra assistance and you are not that good with
Maths, Miss Bourke has made herself available to provide extra
assistance on a Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 4pm.
If you would like to take advantage of this offer you can contact Miss
Bourke via the office.
If you have a child over Year 4 you may recall I have previously
mentioned the www.yourtutor.com.au website. Each day from 4pm any
student with a Library card can access this website to get monitored
online assistance with everything from homework to assignment writing.
This is a fantastic opportunity and normally would cost a lot of money,
however, the University of Central Queensland has sponsored this
service for all Sunshine Coast students who are eligible.
Tax Time
You can make claims for some of your
education expenses. If you made a
claimable purchase in the 2009-2010
income year you can claim:
• $780 for each primary school child –
that is a maximum refund of $390 for
each primary school child you have, and
$1,558 for each secondary school child
– that is a maximum refund of $779 for
each secondary school child.
National Curriculum
As our country prepares to move to the
first ever National Curriculum our staff
are keeping on the cutting edge of
developments. Aside from the regular
updates from ACARA (the association
responsible for the new curriculum) we
are also constantly receiving updates
from the Independent Schools
Association and Associated Christian
Schools. These organisations have
given us opportunities to be involved in
corporate feedback to ACARA. School
and individual feedback has been
provided to ACARA also. Our curriculum
committees both Primary and
Secondary are constantly monitoring the
development of the National Curriculum
and we will make sure that we are ready
to implement this curriculum in line with
the Queensland Studies Authority and
State Government guidelines. This
process is still being negotiated, but we
will provide more information as time
progresses.
Year Four Poetry
Year Four have been learning how to write many different styles of
poetry using our senses, rhyme, play on words, line patterns, acrostics
and more.
Here are some examples.
A Walk In The Australian Bush by Eli Farrow
I see giant green trees swaying in the breeze
I hear the colourful birds chirping high in the sky
I feel the hot sun beating down on my head
I smell the salt from the ocean coming inland
I taste the disgusting salt on my tongue
A Walk In The Australian Bush by Paris Naiker
I see jumping joeys coming towards me in fright
I hear crackling rocks under my feet as I step
I feel alone in the vast and isolated bush
I smell the bush fire as it moves towards me
I taste the dry air and smoke in my mouth
A Walk In The Australian Bush by Tobiah Cartlidge
I see the native Aboriginal running to the colony
I hear the crunch of the bush as someone approaches
I feel the termites crawling all over my hand
I smell the leaves of trees as the scent carries on the wind
I taste the sourness of bugs as I eat them for tea
Camp by Jaiden Priestly
New Child Restraint Laws
The major cause of child death and injury in car accidents is that the child
is not in the proper restraint or wearing a seat belt. Re-search has shown
that in many cases, a proper child restraint was in the car but not used.
By law, every child must use a suitable restraint in a car, even when only
travelling a short distance.
Birth to 6 months
Babies must travel facing toward the back of the vehicle in a capsule or a
rear-facing convertible car seat until they are at least 6 months of age
and weigh 8kg. The baby must be both 6 months or older and 8kg or
more.
6 months to 4 years
At 6 months the baby may face forward provided they have also reached
a minimum of 8kg body weight and have good, steady, full head control.
Children without good head control can stay facing toward the rear until
they are 9kg to 12kg, depending on the weight guidelines for the restraint
used.
The weight of the child is important because all forward-facing restraints
are tested from 8kg and, some rear-facing restraints are tested up to
12kg.
Once facing forward, children should remain in this type of child seat —
anchored by a tether strap and the car seat belt with an in-built harness
— until they are 4 years of age. If the child is not 4 but has exceeded the
maximum limitations of the seat (under cur-rent Australian Standards a
body weight of 18kg) or, when sitting on the child seat, the highest
harness shoulder position is more than 2.5 cm below the child’s shoulder,
or, when sitting on the child seat, the child’s eyes are level with or above
the back of the child seat, then the child can graduate into a booster seat.
So, children should only graduate into a booster seat when they have
exceeded the height / weight limitations of the child toddler seat. For
example, if your 3-year-old weighs more than 18kg they can move into a
booster, or if your child is at least 4 years old and has reached the
MINIMUM requirements for using a booster seat (14kg in weight) they
can graduate into a booster seat.
While 14kg is around the average weight of a 2 year old, booster seats
ARE NOT designed for children this young. A 2-year-old weighing 14kg
will likely be a shorter, ‘squatter’ package than a slim 4-year-old weighing
similar. Also, 2-year-olds are not mentally ready for booster seats as they
do not have the level of comprehension for instructions on the wearing of
seat belts.
4 years to 7 years
All children are required to be re-strained in a booster seat until they turn
7 years of age. A child must be in a booster seat until they turn 7 unless
their weight exceeds 26kg (currently the maxi-mum weight to which all
boosters are tested in Australia) or their eye level is higher than the back
of the restraint or the vehicle’s headrest. If the vehicle is not fitted with a
headrest then a half booster is probably not suitable as the child’s head is
not adequately pro-tected.
What does it mean for you and your child?
Penalty for incorrectly securing a child: $300 and 3 demerit points.
