My name is Eric Simon and I am delighted to hear that I will be teaching at your school very soon. I currently am a teacher in Gympie ay Victory College and also privately, and I am moving down to the coast very soon. My family has owned the local music store for over 20 years now and I have been playing drums and guitar since I was a child. My passion in life is music and teaching this gift to others, helping them to discover the talents that they have in music. My music lessons are individual and will be held during school hours costing $20 per lesson. Each lesson is 30min long and includes teaching of music theory as well as practical application on the instrument. Looking forward to teaching with you and being part of this great college. Shop for Sunshine Kids Many thanks to everyone who submitted receipts either into the office or directly to the Sunshine Plaza in the recent Shop for Sunshine Kids Competition. Due to all of your efforts we managed to come in 8th place out of the thirty schools that competed. The good news is that we received $1000 for our efforts. Science on Saturday Science on Saturday is a fun and exciting Queensland Government program giving Queensland school students from 7 to 14 years old an opportunity to participate in real, hands-on science experiments. Each phase will run for four weeks in venues across Queensland, with a new topic each week. Attend one session or attend all of them. During the first week of the program, students will receive a Science show bag with 8 experiments to complete at home with family and friends! Children who attend all four sessions will receive one of the following magazines at the end of their program: • The Helix magazine a science magazine for ages 10+ Scientriffic magazine a science magazine for ages 7+. Term 3 details Science on Saturday costs $6 per session (pre-paid) or A$9 per session if you pay on the day. There are two 90-minute sessions each Saturday: • a junior session (7-10 years old) from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm (10 am - 11.30 am in weeks two and three). • a senior session (11-14 years old) from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm (1.00 pm - 2.30 pm in weeks two and three). Topics in 2010 are: • 7 August - Exploring Science • 14 August - Green Science • 21 August - Cool Science • 28 August - Solving Science. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. To book, phone 1300 302 649 or use our online booking form. Please note, the booking procedure is not automatic. Please wait 48 hours for a confirmation email or phone call. If you have not received a response within 48 hours, please try again. Bookings will open on 26 July. Numbers are limited to 25 per session and bookings are essential, even if you want to pay on the day. Science on Saturday sessions for Term 3 will be held at the following locations: • Sunshine Coast - Maroochydore State High School, 160 Maroochydore Road, Maroochydore. Please note that bookings and payment close at 4 pm each Friday prior to Science on Saturday sessions. Tutoring on Thursday If your child is needing extra assistance and you are not that good with Maths, Miss Bourke has made herself available to provide extra assistance on a Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 4pm. If you would like to take advantage of this offer you can contact Miss Bourke via the office. If you have a child over Year 4 you may recall I have previously mentioned the www.yourtutor.com.au website. Each day from 4pm any student with a Library card can access this website to get monitored online assistance with everything from homework to assignment writing. This is a fantastic opportunity and normally would cost a lot of money, however, the University of Central Queensland has sponsored this service for all Sunshine Coast students who are eligible.

If you made a claimable purchase in the 2009-2010 income year you can claim: • $780 for each primary school child – that is a maximum refund of $390 for each primary school child you have, and $1,558 for each secondary school child – that is a maximum refund of $779 for each secondary school child. Aside from the regular updates from ACARA (the association responsible for the new curriculum) we are also constantly receiving updates from the Independent Schools Association and Associated Christian Schools. These organisations have given us opportunities to be involved in corporate feedback to ACARA. School and individual feedback has been provided to ACARA also. Our curriculum committees both Primary and Secondary are constantly monitoring the development of the National Curriculum and we will make sure that we are ready to implement this curriculum in line with the Queensland Studies Authority and State Government guidelines. This process is still being negotiated, but we will provide more information as time progresses. Here are some examples.
