In‐class Poster Presentation on an Impressionist<br />

You may work in pairs or alone for this assignment. Posters will be displayed in class.<br />

PART ONE<br />

Biography of an Impressionist<br />

Your assignment is to be well presented as a poster on cardboard. Information for Part One only may be presented in<br />

point form.<br />

Vincent Van Gogh painted in the style of the Impressionists. Impressionism was an art movement which tried to<br />

capture light. The following artists are all impressionists. Vincent van Gogh Grace Cossington Smith Claude<br />

Monet Edgar Degas<br />

Choose one and find out the following (you can tick the boxes when this information is included in your assignment):<br />

PART TWO<br />

Critical Analysis of a Painting<br />

Write a critical analysis of one of the chosen artist’s works. It must be a different artwork to any analysed in class.<br />

Many of these artist’s woks can be found on the internet or in the library. On the following page are some key<br />

questions to help you analyse the artwork.<br />

Include a full colour copy of the art work you are analysing in you presentation<br />

Hints: Response to the art work should be well thought out and presented in a<br />

discussion or sentence format, rather than point form. For example:<br />

ANALYSIS OF AN ARTWORK – KEY QUESTIONS<br />

These facts are the beginning of the clues that will tell us<br />

about the artwork’s meaning or purpose<br />

DESCRIPTION an objective (matter of fact) description of what you can actually see<br />

• List everything you can see eg people, shapes, trees, dark objects etc<br />

• What materials have been used eg oil paint, collage<br />

• How was it made? eg thick paint applied with a brush. Is anything stuck on?<br />

• What equipment has been used? eg brush, pencil, chainsaw. Is the artwork an<br />

obvious subject/abstract/detailed/realistic etc?<br />

• What types of colours, textures, shapes, lines have been used?<br />

ANALYSIS how the artwork is put together?<br />

• What appears closer /further away? e.g. large shapes appear nearer<br />

• Is there a focal point in the picture? ie something which draws attention? Why does<br />

it draw attention e.g. more detailed, larger, position in the picture? Do shapes<br />

overlap?<br />

• If 2dimensional, does the artwork appear 3 dimensional? How has the artist<br />

achieved this?<br />

• How is the artwork composed/arranged ?<br />

• Is there a relationship/link between the way media/materials are used and the<br />

subject matter?<br />

• What are the influences? e.g. artist, culture, religion, history, art movements<br />

• What is the mood of the work?<br />

INTERPRETATION what do you think it means, why was it made?<br />

• What ideas do you think the artist was exploring?<br />

• What was the artist trying to telling us about? e.g. depicting history, conveying a<br />

mood, experimenting with media, trying to influence audience opinion on a topic,<br />

provoking audience response<br />

• What feelings about/response to the artwork do you have? Do you like it? Why?<br />

JUDGEMENT has the artwork succeeded in its’ aims?<br />

• Is this a good piece of art?<br />

• How well has this artwork been done/executed?<br />

• Has the artist been able to communicate what they were trying to say?<br />

• Is it an important piece of art in relation to other artworks?<br />

• Look at what the experts and historians have said about this work to help your<br />

opinion along.
