Educating a Techno Generation
The formalities are over, the speeches have been made, the sports floor has been laid
and now, despite the fact that we have been using it since late last year, we are ready to
have our informal opening of the new Multi-Purpose Hall and Library building. To
celebrate this major event in the life of our school, we would like to invite you and your
family to our CBCC Barn Dance. This should be a fun evening for everyone. Details are
in the P&F report on the next page. I hope many of you can make it as I think this will be
a wonderful opportunity for our school community to celebrate together.
May is an exceptionally busy month around the school, with Secondary Parent/Teacher
Interviews, NAPLAN testing and a host of P&F events starting with a Mother’s Day stall
this week, then a car boot sale and finishing with the Barn Dance.
Last month I featured an article in this newsletter regarding the changing face of
childhood with current technology. I cannot overemphasise the need for parents to be
involved and engaged with their children’s internet use. Every parent should know how to
browse a computer’s internet history and I highly recommend the installation of
monitoring software as very low level computer users are easily able to delete history
files. The difficulty for parents is that children are able to use so many devices to go
online and can do this from so many locations that the reality is that simply monitoring
behaviour is likely to be ineffective as parents may not even know their children are
online.
So what can a parent do? There are many big issues that parents have to face in bringing
up their children, especially in the areas of relationship. The earlier parents are engaging
their children in dialogue the better. It is pointless starting a conversation about sexual
development with someone who is already pubescent. This dialogue needs to begin
when the first “What is this for?” questions appear. Likewise with going online. From the
time children begin using this technology there need to be conversations about the
dangers inherent in such technology.
A very frightening development in the Facebook world is the ability to let the whole world
know where you are immediately with a press of a button. A friend of mine experimented
with this the other day and our location down to the store we were in was immediately
broadcast. This is an absolute bonus to paedophiles and the obvious danger here needs
to be made extremely clear to our kids. The reality is that the technology is here, and,
aside from setting up Amish communities, we have to teach our precious charges how
they can live in a techno world without being swallowed up by it.
Parents and Friends News
Hi everyone. Welcome back to school for an exciting term of fun and
fundraisers for the P&F’s continuing fundraising campaign.
We currently have a number of much needed items that we are hoping to
raise funds for. These include: freezer for the Tuckshop; hot water in the
Home Economics room; blackout curtains in the Science room; two
computers for Library.
Below are is a list of upcoming events. Please mark the dates in your
calendar:
Mother’s Day Stall: This Friday, 6 th May, is our annual Mother’s Day
Stall which is held at the school. This is a wonderful event where your
child/ren can buy a mother’s day gift for you for a very reasonable price.
Gifts will be available from $1.00 to approx $10.00 and your support of
this stall supports the P&F.
Thank you to everyone who has donated gifts for this stall. We so
appreciate your support! We do need more gifts for this stall to be a great
success so if you would like to donate a gift/s to this stall please send in
your item/s by this Thursday so that the item/s can be priced and ready
for Friday’s stall.
If you would like to help price items or volunteer time on the Mother’s day
stall on Friday, please contact Sue Andrews on 0411 752 055.
Car Boot Sale: P&F are running a Car Boot Sale on Saturday
hall, no stiletto heels will be allowed to be worn in the hall.
Thanks so much and we appreciate all of your support.
Blessings
In the last week of Term One, the Year One students had a dress up day where they came as their favourite nursery
rhyme character. The day was a great success with the children really enjoying acting as their character. We had lots
of Little Boy Blues, Mary (no lambs) and a couple of Bo Peeps as well. We had a visit from Mr Andrews who sang us
some fun nursery rhyme songs. Parents came along and enjoyed sharing a special themed morning tea together.
In the second last week of term, Year One had a visit from Adam’s father, Pierre Senekal, who is a police officer. This
was very informative and exciting to see a real live policeman and his policewoman partner, Amanda. Some children
had the chance to be clocked running with a speed camera! Children learned about how to stay safe on their bikes and
on roads.
Middle School History Happenings
What do Barbie, an old tennis ball and lots of aluminium foil, have in
common?
Give up? The answer is appearing as working models of aspects of medieval life.
Items made by students in Year 9 History have recently been on display in the
library. Students certainly used many recycled items in making the following items:
a peasant’s house, gallows, catapult, trebuchet, maidens in period clothing, pots,
flail, shields and assorted battle swords as the photos below show. Information
plaques completed the museum quality experience for those who came to view the
display.
models on display in the CBCC
library.
rest from modelling amongst the
weapons of battle.
The Greeks are coming!
Just a little bit along from the year 9 History display was the year 8 History Ancient
Greek artefacts display. Hand made Medusa masks, painted papier-mache Greek vases and urns, plates depicting
Greek life, terracotta toys, temple columns and Cycladic statues made for another stunning display. Students really
enjoyed the experience of making these artefacts and seeing them on display for the school community.
Right: A close up of the detail of the terracotta toys.
The new bench space, the picturesque waterfall
and pond backdrop in our library make the area a
welcome place to display students’ work for all to
see. I am sure many teachers will make use of the
display area and we encourage you to come and
see what students are creating while learning at
CBCC.
Students visit the Abbey Museum
Late last term students in Years 8, 9 and 10 went on an excursion to the Abbey
Museum, Caboolture. Year 10 students had completed a study of the Reformation,
Year 9 students had been studying about the Middle Ages and Year 8 students
were studying Ancient civilizations; so the excursion was timely to enhance their
appreciation and understanding of these historical times.
We were met by “Sir Matt and Lady Judith” who provided a very entertaining and
informative hands-on display about Knights of the Middle Ages. Students were
intrigued by Matt’s antics and keen to handle the items. We then stepped outside
for a demonstration and a chance to try archery with genuine long bows.
Above: Zarah gets instruction from Lady Judith to make her arrow fly!
After lunch we then visited the museum itself where an hour disappeared far too quickly while looking at the displays
and learning more about the various artefacts: from the spooky monk in the corner to Mary Queen of Scots’ tiny
shoe!
My thanks go to the students for the high level of interest and participation shown on the day. I would also like to
extend my thanks to the accompanying teachers Miss Bourke and Mrs Briggs, the accompanying parents, Mrs
Marilyn Smith and Mrs Anita Cardow and our drivers Mick, Frank and Caville for making the excursion a worthwhile
Sports Floor Installed
Over the holidays the sports floor was installed in our new Multi-Purpose Hall. Included in this installation was linemarking
for a basketball half court and a volley ball court. What an excellent facility for our children. Our PA system
is installed and working excellently, however, there are some items we still need and which some members of the
College community may be able to help with. In particular, we are looking for an electric keyboard (band quality),
some more guitar amplifiers and some stage lighting. We will be able to acquire these items over time, but if you
happen to have access to any of these, please let Mr Andrews know.
Doing Well, But We Could DO Better
Last year we introduced a battery recycling program to the college and wider community.
Thank you to the people that have already donated old and used batteries to the distinctive
yellow and purple wheelie bin by the CBCC uniform shop and staffroom. We would love to see
the bin fill up with the old batteries that I am sure are lurking around your home. Just put them
aside and bring them in when they pile up!
Used batteries - any size - that are disposed of in the general rubbish, end up leaching out of the
landfill and creating a toxic hazard of chemicals and heavy metals in the soil and groundwater
which is a big fat no-no for the environment.
Everyone is again encouraged to bring used batteries to the college for collection and recycling
by Battery World Maroochydore. This is a free service the company offers as part of their
corporate responsibility to help protect the environment.
Each classroom should also have a little desk top bin to encourage students to bring in used batteries from home.
We are keen to see this service flourish – a service that was previously hard to find in our local area.
Positive Parenting Program
The University of Queensland’s Parenting and Family Support Centre is
interested in how effective a Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) radio
podcasts are for parents of 2-10 year old children. This program is
designed for parents who have difficulties with or concerns about their
child’s behavioural or emotional adjustment and promotes positive
parenting practices, assisting parents in developing effective discipline
strategies and creating caring relationships between parents and their
children.
Participation will involve completing a set of questionnaires about your
child, the way you parent, your family and selves on 3 separate
occasions (before starting the program, at the end of the program, and
possibly 6 months after finishing the program), each taking approximately
30 minutes. Over 2 weeks you will listen to 7 podcasts on different
aspects of parenting and child behaviour, each of approximately 10
minutes duration.
Your participation will help us to make Triple P more accessible and
helpful to all families by making this program available online. You will
also find out more about Triple P and positive parenting strategies. To be
a part of this innovative and novel research please begin by going to
http://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/ppp and follow the instructions.
NAPLAN Testing
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been
an annual event for schools since 2008.
On Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, students will
undertake the 2011 NAPLAN tests.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing,
Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and
Numeracy.
NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed
over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail
type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in
numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia
children.
All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with
disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support
normally provided to them in the classroom.
An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later
this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is
progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish
to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More
information is available at www.naplan.edu.au
