College Bus Service Policy – Effective January 1 st , 2013
1. Coolum Beach Christian College operates a bus service to assist parents who are unable to make other
satisfactory arrangements for their children to travel to and from the College. The service is provided on
the basis that parents pay a Bus Fee, which contributes to, but in no way covers, the cost of bus
operations.
2. Bus routes, pick-up and drop off points will be finalised at the beginning of each year, and no changes to
bus stops or bus routes will be made unless absolutely necessary.
3. Bus routes are designed to give preference to full-time users. Bus runs are aimed at being no longer than
1 hour in duration for the convenience of students. In order to achieve this, the bus stop will be located on
a main road as close as is practicable to the student’s residence. Parents will be asked to drop off and pick
up their students at a nominated ‘Bus Stop’ location.
4. First preference for seating allocations will be given to full-time students who live furthest from the College
and who have no other reasonable transport alternative. Part-time students will only be able to use the
service if a seat is available. If a seat allocated to a part-time student is required by a full-time student, the
part-time student will be given the option of upgrading to full-time. If a student wishes to have a friend
come on the bus with them, then parents/carers are to advise the Administration Office the day before so
that, if possible, seat allocations can be made.
5. Once a seat has been allocated on either a full-time or part-time basis, parents will be charged for the
whole term’s use at the beginning of each term according to the chosen usage. Bus costings cannot be
adjusted until the Bus Coordinator has received signed and dated notification of any cancellation,
change of address or bus route, leave of absence or any other extenuating circumstances.
6. If a student applies to use the bus mid year and there are no available seats, they will be placed on a
waiting list and allocated a seat as soon as one becomes available (in accordance with policy number 4
above).
7. If a student applies to use the bus mid year and there is a vacancy, he/she will be required to use an
existing bus stop unless the route can be changed without interrupting timetables. (Changes cause
inconvenience to all other bus users).
8. Students must be ready to catch the bus when it arrives and should be at the pick-up point five minutes
before the set time as the bus will not be able to wait for them. If for any reason the bus is not able to be
at the pick-up point within 30 minutes of the set time, we will try to contact parents by telephone. Students
should remain at the pick-up point for at least 30 minutes. All parents using the service should ensure
the College has an up-to-date telephone number on which they can be contacted during the hour
before and after the set pick-up and drop-off time.
9. It is parent’s responsibility to ensure there is someone responsible to pick up their child at the arranged
time from the bus stop. The bus driver will stay with the child if the bus is running early until the scheduled
time. Parents are to wait at the bus stop if the bus is running late. This applies to all students from Prep to
Year 7. Secondary students will be able to walk home if this arrangement is approved by parents. Parents
of students from Prep to Year 7 must provide the College with a letter of consent if they are to be left at the
bus stop without supervision; all other students will remain on the bus and returned to the College. Parents
will need to make alternative arrangements for their child/ren to be collected from the College.
10. Parents should make contingency plans to care for their children in the event a bus is unable to complete
its route for any reason.
11. All inquiries about the bus service or delays in students arriving home should be directed to the College
Administration Office or the Bus Coordinator on 0402 444 117.
12. In order to facilitate a more equitable share of bus running costs per family, circular zones radiating from
the College have been mapped and costed according to their distance from the College and the number of
children per family using the service. The table below illustrates these arrangements for full-time students
per term:
No of Children in
Family
Zone 1
Zone 2
Zone 3
Zone 4
(per term)
1 child $275 $315 $355 $395
2 children $465 $530 $575 $635
3 or more children $565 $620 $665 $730
If you use the bus service, these share of costs, based on your planned usage, will be invoiced to
you at the beginning of each term.
13. Parents who have completed the “Application for Bus Transportation” forms will be advised by letter of their
child’s bus route and pick-up and drop-off times, during the two weeks prior to the commencement of Term
one.
14. A set of Bus Regulations, covering student behaviour and discipline regulations on buses is attached and
forms part of this policy.
