Dear River Parkways Grant Program Applicant:
I am writing this letter because of your interest in the California River Parkways grant program and to
share information about new policy that affects the grant application process for this and future years.
As Secretary for Natural Resources, I also serve as chair of the Ocean Protection Council and as a
member of the Strategic Growth Council. These councils share a common goal to protect and conserve
natural resources, and to work towards sustainability by investing in projects that improve air and water
quality, promote public health, and encourage infill and compact development in our communities. This
can be accomplished by coordinating efforts among state agencies, and by selecting projects through
our various grant programs that demonstrate strong promise towards achieving these goals.
To that end, the evaluation of River Parkways grant program projects will now include a review to
determine if the project produces multiple benefits that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce risks
associated with climate change impacts, like sea-level rise, and demonstrates collaboration with local,
state, and community entities. For more information about these topics, you can contact the River
Parkways program at (916) 653-2812, or via email at riverparkways@resources.ca.gov
Together, one project at a time, we can protect our resources for future generations and improve the
overall health of California.
Sincerely,
John Laird
Secretary for Natural Resources
