Walpole activities celebrate International Year of Forests THE Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is planning a range of activities around Walpole in May and June to celebrate the International Year of Forests. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness of sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. The International Year of Forests is a global platform to celebrate people’s action to sustainably manage the world’s forests. DEC is celebrating the theme of Forests for People, acknowledging the central role of people in the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable Primary school to run excursion into the Walpole Wilderness development of our forests. Activities will kick off with the opening of an International Year of Forests display at the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk on Sunday, 22 May. As part of the free display, visitors will find information about local and global forests and a commemorative message tree will also be available in the classroom. The aim is for visitors and local residents to leave a short message about what the forest means to them and hang it on the message tree. Each message will contribute to the composition of a range of real perspectives on forests. Other activities planned include excursions into the Walpole Wilderness to be run in conjunction with the Walpole Primary School as part of its UR Walpole program. In addition, DEC will run an art competition at the school, where students of all ages will have the opportunity to express their connections to the forest trough various artistic media. The winning works will be exhibited at the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk at the end of second term.
