In The News
Tony Orlando recently brought his show to
Broken Sound and was met with multiple
standing ovations and rave reviews from our
members. One of our members, Dick Asher,
was the lawyer who represented Tony when
signing his first hit, “Halfway to Paradise”, to
Epic Records. After the show, Tony joined the
Ashers at their home. The cocktail piano in
this picture, which has 66 keys, belonged to Al
Nevins who was one of the original Three Suns.
Al was a record producer and music publisher
who produced that first Tony Orlando hit. Neil
Sedaka, Carol King and many others played
their tunes for Al on this piano. It was gifted to
Dick Asher when Al Nevins passed away and
it arrived at their home in New Jersey one
Saturday afternoon on the back of a flatbed
truck with Al Nevin’s brother Morty playing
“Twilight Time”.
Carl Ramallo, Dining Reservations
We would like to take
a moment to recognize
a person for the
incredible job he
performs which often
goes unnoticed.
Carl Ramallo, who
takes your dining
reservations, always
rises to the challenges presented, regardless
of the situation. He has proven himself to be a
conscientious, hard worker possessing
genuine dedication and talent.
Carl always approaches each task with a smile
on his face. His ability to multitask and his “can
do” attitude makes him a valuable asset to
Broken Sound Club. Members, as well as staff,
do not realize the “juggling”, the numerous
phone conversations and the time it takes to
try to ensure everyone’s reservation is handled
quickly and efficiently and for the time slot
requested.
Towards that end, we were notified that since
the inception of the new club dining reservation
program, Broken Sound is tied for first place in
terms of the number of reservations taken. The
Club we are tied with has three times the amount
of Members that we do.
Hats off to Carl and thank you for helping Broken
Sound be the best.

PLAY UNLIMITED GOLF
FOR THE SUMMER
Social and Tennis members are welcome to play unlimited golf at the club
course during June, July and August at a cost of $55.00 per tee off including
cart fees. Members are welcome to bring guests during the summer months
and reservations may be made two days prior to date of play.
CYCLING SAFETY
Your #1 goal should be to avoid getting hit.
Don’t fall for the myth that wearing a helmet is
the first and last word in biking safety. In truth,
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure. It’s better to not get hit. That’s what real
bicycle safety is about.
1. Get a headlight.
If you’re riding at night, you should absolutely
use a front headlight. It’s required by law,
anyway. Get a rear light. If you’re riding at
night, you absolutely should use a flashing red
rear light. 60% of bike collisions in Florida are
caused by cyclists riding at night without lights.
2. Wear a reflective vest or a safety triangle.
It may seem silly, but bikes are small and easy to
see through even during the day. High quality
reflective gear makes you a lot more visible even
in the day time, not just at night. Yellow or
orange reflective vests really make a big
difference. Reflective leg bands are also easy and
inexpensive.
The mixed doubles format of playing the entire tournament over a Friday , Saturday and finals on
Sunday was great. We had 25 teams participating which is the most the club has ever had entering
this tournament and the results were so close with the pairing of teams in the appropriate divisions.
Many of our residents came out to watch on Saturday and Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed the
competition and the comaraderie.
This event cannot happen without the hard work and dedication of Broken Sound staff and the
support from the entire tennis committee.
Our plans this summer are to get the sewer line
hooked through to the bathroom on hole 5
sometime around May as the permits dictate.
We also will be installing drainage on holes #13
and #16 where the heavy soil was laid that forces
us to be on cart paths when we have a fair amount
of rain. We will be growing the small putting
green in at the starter shed and pushing several
fairways to thicken (#2, #4, #8, #9) as they have
gotten better each year.
Club Course News
Hello Golfers
As another great golf season passes us, believe it or not we are preparing for
the Men’s and Women’s leagues and Couples events for the 2010-2011 Season.
People often ask during the Member-Guest events “how do you get all this to
come together so professionally and organized?” I simply answer “preparation.”
That is why at this time we are not only winding down from one great season but,
preparing for another.
Just a helpful reminder that all of the leagues sweeps earnings must be used by
September 30 th 2010. So, if you are not returning until after this date your sweeps will not be
available for use. Please come by the golf shop and you will find some great sales as well as some
fresh items for summer. We have some great demo clubs and our equipment prices are more than
competitive.
Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf
Great Shots
Congratulations to Beverly Swedko and
Nicholas Carbo! They both aced the 12 th hole
on the same day! They both aced the same
hole with the same club! The both used a 4
iron and lightening struck twice March 7 th on
hole #12.
Congratulations to Erwin S. Cohen who had a
hole in one on hole #14 with a 7 hybrid on March
31, 2010. The Golf Shop also received
information that Gil Goldberg recently eagled
holes 8 and 18. On hole #8 he hit a 3 wood in
the hole from 189 yards and on #18 he jarred a
6 iron from 160 out.
Congratulations to all of you on your “GREAT
SHOTS!!”
SUMMER LEAGUES
The Summer Leagues are now in full swing.
All of the scheduled events are posted in the
respected men’s and ladies locker rooms. You
may also look at the standings that are posted
in the same locations. I hope that you are all
enjoying travelling and playing at different clubs.
Thank you to the Member League
Chairperson’s, who put these leagues together
for all to enjoy.
SUMMER RECIPROCAL PROGRAM
If playing in league events is not your thing, or
you work during the week, or if you like to
venture out and golf at other courses, this is
for you. The program typically runs early-mid
May through the end of October in some cases.
Most clubs do not charge much more than our
cart rate so this is a great opportunity to be
challenged by playing different course designs.
The Golf Shop Staff will be your liaison to these
clubs as contact is made Pro Shop to Pro Shop.
Most tee times can be made two to three days
in advance. The Golf Shop will have a pamphlet
available to you that outlines all the summer
golf programs and golf course maintenance
schedules for your review.
Revamping the practice green at the starter shed on the
Club Course. Massive amounts of tree roots and stumps
left over from Hurricane Frances killed the green as it would
grow with methane gas releases.
The only project we have going this summer, is
the leveling of all the sprinkler heads around
the golf course, especially around the greens.
We will also be adding a new variation of
Bermuda that is said to be the best turf to handle
shade in the industry, called Tifgrand. We will
be doing some sod work to the right of #6 green,
down the right of #9 rough along the ficus/outof-bounds
section and then #16 around the tee
complexes. One of our primary goals is to work
extremely hard to change out the soil texture of
the fairways to increase the ability of our
members to hit their fairway shots easier.
The summer days are finally
here for us to enjoy the heat,
humidity and longer sunny
days. As you know in May we
begin our aerification
schedules to open up the soil
to allow oxygen and water in
and get any gases out that have
built up due to heavy play and cold temperatures.
The grasses begin to grow more prolifically and
the greens slow down a bit from the quick
growth throughout the day. With all that being
said I am publishing the aerification and
tournament schedule for both courses this
summer so you can plan accordingly on return
trips down or for those that are here year around.
It’s never a dull moment at Broken Sound. A
fire broke out across the street in April, south,
from the Old Course and was whipped into a
raging inferno trying to jump Military Trail to
the West. Fortunately, the fire department was
able to contain the fire within the wooded
preserve area only. Rumor had it Mr. Crean
crashed his cart upon re-entry into the
MILITARY FAMILY COUPON PROJECT
After three years of waiting, the Purple Martins
are beginning to show up and make nests in our
Purple Martin houses around the course. They
eat a prolific amount of flying insects everyday
so they are excellent creatures to have around
besides watching their incredible acrobatics in
the air. Such is the way of Mother Nature.
For Military Families who relocate overseas, the financial transition can be
difficult. Enlisted soldiers and their families may find stretching their dollars a
real challenge, even more so than those who are based in this country. One
way we can help is by saving expired or unused coupons and sending them to
select co-op operations around the country. What a treasure it is to know that
our expired coupons can mean a real difference to the families who have
dedicated and sacrificed a part of their lives for the sake of our country.
Please Bring in any and all newspaper coupons and
they will be sent to our soldiers
Food & Beverage
Food For Thought
Dear Members,
With summer approaching, we stop to take a deep breath! Not because it has
been such a whirlwind season – party after party, dinner after dinner, event
after event, but because it was our most successful and productive year in the
Food and Beverage
Department. We are
proud that we succeeded in breaking new
frontiers – making better, bigger and bolder
statements with events that will make Broken
Sound history.
Throughout the summer, rest assured that
we will continue to keep up the hard work.
Our Member Appreciation Prix Fixe menu will
continue to be available on Tuesday nights.
Please be sure to check the Summer Dining
Every happy celebration that observes life’s milestone events, involves two
common elements. A Dance Floor and a Feast. Through dancing and enjoying
tasty morsels, we rejoice in the company of our families and friends. Greek
philosophers argued in
ancient times, that
dancing liberates the
spirit. This stands true
today. Twenty-first century entertainment is
more and more focusing in on the art of
movement. There are few people only, who
when watching Dancing with the Stars, don’t
move their feet on the ground or don’t wish
they would be able to tango like the
professionals.
POOL BAR
Open Every
Monday and Thursday
4pm to 8pm
light bite menu
salads sandwiches wraps
Life is a ballroom ... One must dance the waltz,
a bit of quickstep, and then every once in a while
lighten the pace up with a rumba and a cha cha!
A steady partner is recommended, since they
will know your every move. One must learn to
know all the steps, otherwise you break the free
flowing rhythm. Life is all about being able to
switch rhythms, from fast-pace to relaxation.
Summer is all about the latter! Relax, wear a hat
and sunscreen and just enjoy the view!
FOUR RETURNS TO MASTER
The most important return
is the return cross court
to the server. However,
every skilled player
should have just a few
more tricks up his or her
sleeve when competing.
Here are four more returns you should add to
your arsenal to keep your opponents guessing:
1 The down-the-line backhand return to the
opposing net player.
2 The inside-out backhand return at server.
3 Taking second serves, returning them to the
server and following the ball to net.
4 The chip or block return over the net player’s
head, preferably over his/her backhand side.
With focus on each of these techniques during
practice, you can surely master each return
to add to your repertoire. Not only will you
take advantage of the element of surprise, you
will prove to your opponent that you play both
well and smart!
Ric Bershad & Larry Kobren
Grand Slam League / Senior League Tennis Results:
Congratulations to Leon Tracy for winning the Championship in the Grand Slam League this year.
Also both Larry Kobren and Warren Rabinowitz had their teams playing in the finals but lost in close
games. I would also like to congratulate Leon Tracy and Fred Drozdoff for winning the regular
season of Palm Beach County Senior League. Fred Drozdoff’s team lost in the playoffs and Leon
Tracy’s team unfortunately lost in the finals, but came down to three super tie-breaks to determine
the winner. A special thanks to Lewis Messulam, Larry Kobren and Len Rosen for their relentless
work of being captains for our other three teams. We look forward to next year for another
successful league result from all the teams.
DIRECTORS NOTE
End of season is already
upon us. We had a great
year with many great
memories. The Club was
filled with members, their
guests, family and friends
utilizing all our Club has to
offer. The Fitness and Spa
Staff worked with so many
people this year. We truly
enjoyed helping you all in your “pursuit of
healthiness.” Congratulations to all those with
success stories!
I know that this year was not just filled with
happiness and success. There are still many
challenges in our lives. Many of these challenges
cause us high levels of stress. These stressors
are unhealthy and need to be dealt with as soon
as possible. We know that stress affects
Stimulus
Package
Receive 3 x 30-minute personal training
sessions and 3 x 60-minute deep tissue
massages for $300! save $60
Incorporating massage into your conditioning
program has many benefits. It helps you get
“in shape” faster, and with less stiffness and
soreness. It helps you recover faster from
heavy workouts, and relieves conditions which
may cause injury. The physiological and
psychological benefits of massage make it an
ideal complement to a total conditioning
program.
Available throughout June and July. Recipient
must use the same personal trainer and same
massage therapist for the 3 sessions. Recipient
must receive all personal training and massage
sessions.
different people in different ways; however the
one consistent is that our bodies respond to
stress negatively. The more “stressed and
unhealthy” your body operates…the more
“vulnerable” your body becomes. We all make
excuses for our unhealthy actions, but let’s all
try to “stimulate” our lives, to do the healthy
things that will get us back on the right track.
We at Broken Sound Spa & Fitness would like
to help. Exercise, massages, facials,
acupuncture, nutritional advice and social
interactions are all great ways to relieve stress
and are proven to make people healthier. Please
take advantage of the great services, therapists
and pricing we have to offer this summer.
Broken Sound members and residents, Boca
Friends has raised $100,000 from this year’s
terrific, and the Fashion Show was outstanding! Once more, you came out in huge
numbers for Professor Robert Watson and Dr. Joyce Saltman, laughter consultant, and
because you asked, we will try to bring them both back again next year.
