engine which also runs on the dual fuel principle.
Customers were immediately convinced by the
concept of the ME-GI engine. At the end of 2012,
shortly after the market launch, US ship owners
TOTE ordered 8L70ME-GI engines for the first container
ships to run mainly on liquefied natural gas
(LNG) and which are therefore the most environmentally
friendly container ships in the world.
There are currently several dozen ME-GI and
ME-LGI engines on the order books due for delivery
in 2014 and 2015.
With the ME-GI engine, previously liquefied natural
gas is returned to its gaseous state and injected
into the combustion chamber under high pressure.
By contrast, the ME-LGI engine uses liquefied
gas with a low ignition point, which is injected
into the combustion chamber at significantly lower
pressure. The LGI engine can be operated with
various types of fuels such as methanol, ethanol
and dimethyl ether (DME).
One of the many benefits of dual fuel engines is
their environmental compatibility especially in
gas mode as CO 2 and nitrogen oxide emissions are
significantly reduced and sulfur oxide, soot and
particle emissions are practically non-existent.
A further benefit is that MAN dual fuel engines
allow ship owners and operators much more flexibility
and ensure economic efficiency since the
fuel can be switched in the short term according
to availability and price.
