Bucs, 'Naughts, and Cops Score Runs for Charity
Here it is, June again, and
you know what that means
- Hurricane Season! If we
learned one thing in 2004,
it's that it doesn't really
matter if you live on the
coast of Florida or not -
during hurricane season,
nobody is safe when a
storm hits.
On Saturday, May 19, 2007, Polk Sheriff's Charities held its first official
fundraiser in the form of a softball tournament which pitted cops
against deputies and the Lakeland Dreadnaughts against the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers. The event raised over $2500 for this wothy cause,

predicted a 75 percent
chance of an above normal
hurricane season this year.
The forecast predicts "13-
17 named storms, with 7-

The day began with a healthy competition between Lakeland Police
officers and Polk County Sheriff's deputies. The fans went wild as the
two teams tied in the 7th inning, prompting a tiebreaker inning where
PCSO won 10-9. The best hitters from all teams then participated in a
Home Run derby.
At 4:00 p.m., the National High School Champion Lakeland
Dreadnaughts mounted an impressive offense against the Super Bowl
Champs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was a lot of trash-talking
between these 2 winning football teams. On hand to show off their
athletic prowess were: Alex Smith (#81), quarterback Bruce
Gradkowski (#5), Julian Jenkins (#91), and Donald Penn (#70). Barrett
Ruud (#51) came out to support but couldn't play due to an injury. The
Bucs ended up winning by one homerun, and a great time was had by
all!

State-certified canine instructor Deputy Sheriff Steven Hearth is proud
to announce that on May 25, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central County
Jail in Bartow, the first class of K-9 units for the year 2007 graduated
from PCSO K-9 school. This class was comprised of officers from
agencies in and around Polk County who underwent a grueling 800
hours of state-certified canine team instruction at the PCSO Burnham-

McCall Training Center. The canines are now certified in patrol
assistance and narcotics detection (with the exception of K-9 Cookie
who is narcotics-certified only) and they are listed below with their
handlers:

On Sunday, May 6, 2007, PCSO Sergeant Christen Shea, Detective Rian

Shea, and Detective Christopher Shea, who are all related (Rian and
Christopher are brothers, and Rian and Christen are husband & wife),
marched in the 24th Annual Aquidneck National Police Parade in
Newport, Rhode Island. The Shea brothers are originally from Rhode
Island, and the family made the trek up north last year to participate
in this annual event and to represent the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
This year, the trio joined other parade participants, including their
other brother, Patrick, who is a detective with the Newport Police
Department, to honor Deputy Sheriff Matt Williams and his K-9
partner, Diogi, who were killed in the line of duty on September 28,
2006. The Shea family marched with a PCSO agency flag. Christopher,
Rian, and Christen are seen in the photo here.
Each year, the Aquidneck National Police Parade honors fallen law
enforcement officers, usually from the New England area. This year,
the Shea family expressed a desire to have the parade honor Matt &
Diogi, although they were killed in Florida, nearly 1300 miles away.
The Sheas were the only participants from the state of Florida last
year, and this year they won an award for traveling the farthest to
participate in the parade. Other participants from outside the state
have included the NYPD brass band, the U.S. Marine Corps silent drill
team, the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Iowa State Police,
and the Dallas Police Department.
Upon their return, Christen said, "It was very inspiring to see thousands
of people from hundreds of miles away who supported our fallen
deputy and his K-9 partner, though they had never met him. The street
was lined with people saying "thank you" and "God Bless." This parade
only proved that law enforcement is a huge family. We are all brothers
and sisters no matter what color the uniform or what agency we work
for."
National Police Week Honors Fallen Heroes

In Observance of National Police Week, the Fraternal Order of Police
Polk County Lodge 46 and the Polk County Law Enforcement Memorial
Fund, Inc., hosted the Twentieth Annual Polk County Peace Officers'
Memorial Service on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Lakeland Bicentennial
Park located on Lake Beulah Drive adjacent to the Lakeland Center.
Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Vernon Matthew Williams was
memorialized on the Polk County Law Enforcement Memorial during the
service. To date, a total of 26 law enforcement and corrections officers
with Federal, State, County, and local agencies in Polk County have
died in the line of duty while serving the citizens of Polk County; all of
whom were previously memorialized on the Polk County Law
Enforcement Memorial. Deputy Williams became the 27th officer and
11th Polk County Sheriff's deputy to be added to the Memorial.
Family members of the fallen officers, representatives from various
public service organizations, and local government agencies were in
attendance. The local service was the first of three in which agency
members and the Williams family participated. The State Memorial
Service was held in Tallahassee from May 6-7th, and the National
Memorial was held in Washington, D.C., where several events took
place there from May 12th through 16th.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers MEMORIAL FUND
website, there have been "17,917 federal, state, and local law
enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and whose names
are engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial."
Deputy Williams' name was among 145 individuals nationwide who died
in the line of duty in 2006.

PCSO has TOP COPS!
During the National Law Enforcement Memorial Services held in
Washington, D.C. on May 12 -16, 2007, the "Gator Guys," Sergeant
Andrew Williams, and Deputies Billy Osborne, Michael Parker, and
David Clements, were name four of the Nation's 18 TOP COPs. The
ceremony was broadcast by the television show America's Most Wanted
on Fox 13. Our deputies were the only Florida honorees.
Since the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO)
launched the awards program in 1994, the TOP COPS Awards® have
paid tribute to outstanding law enforcement officers across the country
for actions above and beyond the call of duty. TOP COPS® awardees
are nominated by their fellow officers for outstanding service during the
preceding calendar year.
As you may recall, at approximately 4:00 am on Wednesday, November
29, the Polk County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls about a man
yelling for help in the area of Lake Parker County Park, across the street
from the Moose Lodge on East Lake Parker Drive. These 4 deputies
arrived and heard a man in the water calling for help, saying he was
being attacked by an alligator. Without regard for their own safety, the
deputies immediately entered the alligator- infested water and found the
man in the grasp of an alligator's jaws. They pulled the man from the
alligator and made their way approximately 40 feet to shore where an
ambulance was waiting to transport him to Lakeland Regional Medical
Center. All four deputies made it out of the water without injury.

The BoCC has voted to name Polk County's first Doggie Park after DiOGi!
DiOGi
Park!
DiOGi Park will be Polk County's fist ever dog park with dual play areas for little and big
dogs, each with colorful fire hydrants, agility training equipment, and shaded picnic
shelters for doggie masters.
The park is located on three fenced-in acres within Loyce E. Harpe Park, at 500 West
Carter Road in Mulberry. The DiOGi Park will offer the perfect play and exercise
experience for our canine friends.
The opening day event is scheduled for 9:00 am on July 14, 2007. So, sit, and
stay alert for more info on the park's grand opening!
