The day began with a healthy competition between Lakeland Police<br />

officers and <strong>Polk</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Sheriff's</strong> deputies. The fans went wild as the<br />

two teams tied in the 7th inning, prompting a tiebreaker inning where<br />

PCSO won 10-9. The best hitters from all teams then participated in a<br />

Home Run derby.<br />

At 4:00 p.m., the National High School Champion Lakeland<br />

Dreadnaughts mounted an impressive offense against the Super Bowl<br />

Champs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There was a lot of trash-talking<br />

between these 2 winning football teams. On hand to show off their<br />

athletic prowess were: Alex Smith (#81), quarterback Bruce<br />

Gradkowski (#5), Julian Jenkins (#91), and Donald Penn (#70). Barrett<br />

Ruud (#51) came out to support but couldn't play due to an injury. The<br />

Bucs ended up winning by one homerun, and a great time was had by<br />

all!<br />

State-certified canine instructor Deputy Sheriff Steven Hearth is proud<br />

to announce that on May 25, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central <strong>County</strong><br />

Jail in Bartow, the first class of K-9 units for the year 2007 graduated<br />

from PCSO K-9 school. This class was comprised of officers from<br />

agencies in and around <strong>Polk</strong> <strong>County</strong> who underwent a grueling 800<br />

hours of state-certified canine team instruction at the PCSO Burnham-<br />
