Sawai Gandharva was bit unhappy about this new experiment and was worried<br />

about the future <strong>of</strong> Bhimsenji’s career. However, this new Kirana style rendering<br />

was readily accepted and approved by listeners and critics in Bombay and Pune.<br />

Bhimsen Joshi became a ‘Star’ name in music concerts through out India and on<br />

All India Radio. He sang as a playback singer in Marathi, Hindi, and Kanada<br />

films. He sang a duet in raga Malkauns with Pt. Jasraj in English film ‘Birbal my<br />

brother’. His duet with Manna dey – ‘Ketki Gulab Juhi’ from Hindi film - ‘Basant<br />

Bahar’ is very popular even today. He used to sing Marathi natyageet, Hindi,<br />

Marathi and Kanada bhajans during his concerts. In 1972, he experimented with<br />

a program <strong>of</strong> multilingual bhajans for three hours. This new ‘Santvani’ program<br />

became very popular.<br />

Bhimsenji has cut several discs with HMV during 1945-90. <strong>The</strong>se include 78’s,<br />

LP and EP’s <strong>of</strong> classical, light classical music and devotional songs on LP’s titled<br />

Abhanvani – parts 1-3, Dasvani and Kabir Bhajans on LP – ‘Sun Bhai Sadho’.<br />

Mr. G. N. Joshi <strong>of</strong> HMV was fond <strong>of</strong> his music and was instrumental in recording<br />

his music over a long period on several discs. During audio/video tapes and CD<br />

era, Bhimsenji has recorded prolifically. He strongly prefers traditional ragas, as<br />

opposed to light ones or experimental ragas. Some <strong>of</strong> the ragas he likes and is<br />

known for are Shuddha Kalyan, Mian ki Todi, Puriya Dhanashree, Multani,<br />

Bhimpalasi, Darbari and Ramkali.<br />

After the death <strong>of</strong> his guru Sawai Gandharva in 1952, he initiated an annual<br />

music festival in his memory. This is now most prestigeous event in India and<br />

music lovers attend it with great enthusiasm at Pune. He has been awarded with<br />

several titles degrees and awards. ‘Bharat Ratna’ – the highest Indian honor will<br />

be conferred on him in January 2009. He has already reached millions through<br />

his opening piece in the song – ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ – a video made on<br />

National Integration in 1988. His famous Bhairvi – ‘Jo Bhaje Hariko Sada’ shall<br />

keep ringing in the ears <strong>of</strong> listeners for many genarations.<br />
