Ustad Faiyaaz Khan – (1880-1950)<br />

Faiyaaz Khan’s name is associated with Agra gharana as ‘<strong>The</strong> Khalipha’ (torch<br />

bearer). He was also born at Agra. His father passed away just before he was<br />

born. His maternal grandfather Gulam Abbas Khan nurtured him and taught him<br />

music. His father belonged to ‘Ramzan Khan Rangile’ gharana whereas he learnt<br />

Agra gayaki and hence there is a nice confluence <strong>of</strong> both the styles in his music.<br />

Later on he learnt many bandishes from his father in law, Mehboob Khan who<br />

also composed as ‘Daras Piya’. He also learnt khayal gayaki from his maternal<br />

uncle Ustad Natthan Khan (father <strong>of</strong> Vilayat Hussain Khan).<br />

He was a child prodigy and became an expert singer. At the age <strong>of</strong> 25 years, he<br />

performed at Mysore State durbar. Same State conferred a title <strong>of</strong> ‘Aftab-e-<br />

Mousiki’ [sun <strong>of</strong> music] on him in 1925. In 1915, he was invited to Baroda State<br />

with a handsome salary <strong>of</strong> one hundred rupees per month. He used to sing in the<br />

court every week and also on special festive occasions. He also taught at the<br />

Gayanshala (Music school) <strong>of</strong> Baroda State. He was a composer too and<br />

composed bandishes with pen name – ‘Prem Piya’. Around 1920, Tukoji Maharaj<br />

Holkar <strong>of</strong> Indore State invited him for a concert in the Holi festival. <strong>The</strong>reafter he<br />

was invited every year. He was also invited by Mysore State for their Dashehara<br />

festival. As a representative <strong>of</strong> Baroda State, he used to attend and perform in<br />

many music festivals through out India. He had many disciples but Malka Jan <strong>of</strong><br />

Agra was intimately associated with him. His other disciples include – brother in<br />

law Ata Hussain, Dilip Chandra Vedi, Gulam Rasool Khan, Pt. Ratanjankar,<br />

Swamy Vallabh Das, Dhruvatara Joshi, Khadim Hussain Khan, Latafat Hussain<br />

Khan, Bhishma Dev Chatterjee, and Kundan Lal Saigal. Khansaheb was in the<br />

services <strong>of</strong> the Baroda State until his death in 1950.<br />

Ustad Faiyaaz Khan had a grand personality. He used to wear a black sherwani,<br />

white shirt, and a coat with lots <strong>of</strong> badges that he had won. He used to wear a<br />

turban or an Italian cap. He was six feet tall and had huge mustache. He had a<br />

very strong and melodious voice and used to sing with a full throw. He used to<br />

sing khayal, dhrupad, dhamar, thumri, tappa, bhajan, and even quawali. His<br />

bhairvi ‘Baju Band Khul Khul Ja’ was very famous and he has cut it on one 78<br />

rpm record. Around 1934, he recorded his own composition ‘More mandir aab<br />

laut nahin aaye’ in raga jaijaiwanti, one <strong>of</strong> his favorite raga. This 12” diameter, 78<br />

rpm shellac disc was issued by ‘<strong>The</strong> Hindusthan Record Company’. Chandi<br />

Charan Saha <strong>of</strong> Hindusthan Record Company also released two more 10”<br />

diameter records <strong>of</strong> ragas Todi (Garva mai sanga), Paraj (Manmohan brijko<br />

rasiya), Nat bihag (Jhan jhan jhan jhan payal baje), and Puriya (Mai kariye). In<br />

1938, Nirodbaran Chatterjee <strong>of</strong> same company recorded few more ragas viz.<br />
