Christian Formation<br />

Congratulations to the second grade students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Blessed</strong> <strong>Teresa</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calcutta</strong><br />

<strong>Parish</strong> who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 9th at the<br />

Basilica at Holy Hill. True wonder and awe showed through the faces <strong>of</strong> the<br />

children as they received Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. A very sincere<br />

thank you to our catechists, Cathy Connor, Kris Buffington, Janet Heppe, and<br />

Barb Jarchow and also Mary Schultz, Christine Dax and Carrie Arndorfer. To<br />

Christian Formation Registration for 2009-2010<br />

Registration packets for the 2009-2010 school year were distributed to parents on the last day <strong>of</strong><br />

classes. The packets that were not picked up were mailed home. All completed forms and fees are<br />

due back to the Christian Formation Office by Friday, June 12th to avoid a late charge <strong>of</strong> $25.00.<br />

2009 Vacation Bible School registrations are included in the packets. VBS will run from July 20th to<br />

the 24th from 9 am until noon each day. This is time sensitive material. Please return forms as soon<br />

as possible. Thank you.

BISHOPS URGE CATHOLICS TO CONTACT<br />

CONGRESS AND NIH: OPPOSE DESTRUCTIVE STEM<br />

CELL RESEARCH<br />

WASHINGTON—The United States Conference <strong>of</strong> Catholic Bishops<br />

(USCCB) launched a new “Oppose Destructive Stem Cell<br />

Research” campaign today, equipping citizens to contact Congress<br />

and the National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health (NIH) to oppose embryonic<br />

stem cell research and support ethical cures and treatments “we<br />

can all live with.” The campaign is facilitated by the USCCB’s partner<br />

organization, the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment.<br />

The campaign homepage, www.usccb.org/stemcellcampaign,<br />

summarizes why the proposed guidelines are unacceptable, provides<br />

links to USCCB resources (including the bishops’ statement<br />

“On Embryonic Stem Cell Research” and multi-media resources<br />

and ads), and encourages web users to “Contact Congress & NIH<br />

Now” through an e-mail interface. Several resources are available in<br />

both English and Spanish.<br />

The campaign site explains that the NIH guidelines “would—for the<br />

first time—use taxpayer funds to encourage the killing <strong>of</strong> embryonic<br />

human beings for their stem cells.” It continues, “Embryonic stem<br />

cell research treats innocent human beings as mere sources <strong>of</strong><br />

body parts, as commodities for our use.”<br />

On Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at 7 p.m., the Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Milwaukee will<br />

present its 2009 Pallium Lecture at Alverno College’s Wehr Auditorium,<br />

3400 S. 43rd St., Milwaukee. The lecture will be preceded by a<br />

prayer service led by Bishop Callahan, and will be followed by a reception.<br />

This year’s speaker is Fr. Alfred McBride, O. Praem. <strong>of</strong> St. Norbert<br />

Abbey. Fr. McBride is a nationally-known lecturer and author. The theme<br />

<strong>of</strong> the lecture is What Does Paul, the Church's First Theologian, Mean by<br />

the Church? Fr. McBride will explain how St. Paul presented the Church<br />

as planned by the Father, founded by the Son and sustained by the Holy<br />

Spirit in good times and in bad times. The event is free <strong>of</strong> charge and<br />

Memorial Day Masses<br />

Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Milwaukee Catholic Cemeteries<br />

Masses for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated on Memorial Day,<br />

Monday, May 25, 2009 at 10 AM at all eight Archdiocesan Cemeteries:<br />

Historic Calvary (see below), Holy Cross, Mount Olivet and St.<br />

Adalbert/ Holy Trinity in Milwaukee; All Saints in Pleasant Prairie; Resurrection<br />

in Mequon; and St. Joseph in Waukesha. Special religious commemorations<br />

and patriotic observances will be conducted at each location.<br />

Historic Calvary Cemetery: Auxiliary Bishop William P. Callahan,<br />

Diocesan Administrator, will preside and preach at the foot <strong>of</strong> Chapel<br />

Advance Commitment Gathering<br />

As our Faith in Our Future Campaign begins to capture the focus<br />

<strong>of</strong> our parish, we are <strong>of</strong>fering a leadership opportunity for those<br />

who desire to make early commitments to enable us to encourage<br />

the congregation and to gain momentum in the campaign.<br />

We are hosting an Advance Commitment Gathering for those<br />

who wish to provide this valuable leadership in this defining moment<br />

in the life <strong>of</strong> <strong>Blessed</strong> <strong>Teresa</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Calcutta</strong> Community.<br />

The Advance Commitment Gathering specifically will …<br />

• Ask parish leadership and other members to consider<br />

making their financial commitments in advance <strong>of</strong><br />

the Special Event Weekend.<br />

• Ask all who attend to prayerfully consider making a<br />

sacrificial financial commitment over the next three<br />

years.<br />

• Demonstrate the value <strong>of</strong> sacrificial financial commit<br />

ments to the campaign and provide momentum and<br />

spiritual encouragement to the community.<br />

This meeting is open to anyone wishing to attend and prayerfully<br />

consider making a sacrificial financial commitment in advance<br />

<strong>of</strong> others.<br />

Commitments will NOT be collected at this gathering. However,<br />

each one attending will receive printed information about the<br />

campaign, including a commitment card. Then you will be<br />

asked to prayerfully respond at least one week before the<br />

church-wide event.<br />

The Advance Commitment Gathering will be held on Monday,<br />

May 18th, at 7:00 pm in Clare Hall. Refreshments will be<br />

served. If you are willing to attend and lead out in our Faith in<br />

SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE<br />

Please contact the pastor to arrange for pre-marriage preparation at<br />

least six months before the desired date for the marriage. One <strong>of</strong> the<br />

parties must be a registered practicing member <strong>of</strong> <strong>Blessed</strong> <strong>Teresa</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Calcutta</strong> <strong>Parish</strong>. Marriages can be scheduled on any day <strong>of</strong> the week<br />

except Sunday.<br />
