BISHOPS URGE CATHOLICS TO CONTACT
CONGRESS AND NIH: OPPOSE DESTRUCTIVE STEM
CELL RESEARCH
WASHINGTON—The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
(USCCB) launched a new “Oppose Destructive Stem Cell
Research” campaign today, equipping citizens to contact Congress
and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to oppose embryonic
stem cell research and support ethical cures and treatments “we
can all live with.” The campaign is facilitated by the USCCB’s partner
organization, the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment.
The campaign homepage, www.usccb.org/stemcellcampaign,
summarizes why the proposed guidelines are unacceptable, provides
links to USCCB resources (including the bishops’ statement
“On Embryonic Stem Cell Research” and multi-media resources
and ads), and encourages web users to “Contact Congress & NIH
Now” through an e-mail interface. Several resources are available in
both English and Spanish.
The campaign site explains that the NIH guidelines “would—for the
first time—use taxpayer funds to encourage the killing of embryonic
human beings for their stem cells.” It continues, “Embryonic stem
cell research treats innocent human beings as mere sources of
body parts, as commodities for our use.”
Faith in our Future
Advance Commitment Gathering
As our Faith in Our Future Campaign begins to capture the focus
of our parish, we are offering a leadership opportunity for those
who desire to make early commitments to enable us to encourage
the congregation and to gain momentum in the campaign.
We are hosting an Advance Commitment Gathering for those
who wish to provide this valuable leadership in this defining moment
in the life of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Community.
The Advance Commitment Gathering specifically will …
• Ask parish leadership and other members to consider
making their financial commitments in advance of
the Special Event Weekend.
• Ask all who attend to prayerfully consider making a
sacrificial financial commitment over the next three
years.
• Demonstrate the value of sacrificial financial commit
ments to the campaign and provide momentum and
spiritual encouragement to the community.
This meeting is open to anyone wishing to attend and prayerfully
consider making a sacrificial financial commitment in advance
of others.
Commitments will NOT be collected at this gathering. However,
each one attending will receive printed information about the
campaign, including a commitment card. Then you will be
asked to prayerfully respond at least one week before the
church-wide event.
The Advance Commitment Gathering will be held on Monday,
May 18th, at 7:00 pm in Clare Hall. Refreshments will be
served. If you are willing to attend and lead out in our Faith in
Our Future Campaign, please call the parish office (966-2191)
no later than May 14 to let us know if you can attend.
