Editors Mumblings
Folks, welcome to the mid year edition of “The Journal” and thank you to those who have given me
encouraging words.
As mentioned at the May meeting this edition may be a bit short on events data due to deadlines and other
pressures on my time, so keep your ears open when Corrie Wake runs through the events at club meetings.
July meeting is the AGM, and it is always good to have new blood on the Committee, so please volunteer (or
even volunteer someone else) to go on the Committee. After a couple of missing guest speakers at this years
meetings, I think we are looking for someone with a talent for finding speakers that will show up!
The Members Directory has been a runaway success, and due to a printers error we have plenty of supply at
$2 each.
Thanks to those who have contributed to the Journal, it makes my life easier, Keep ‘em coming!
Sylvia and myself are off to spend time with family in Warwick Queensland and will possibly miss the next
two meetings.
Don’t forget to get your vehicle inspected, and log books signed, and register for Bay to Birdwood
Yours ramblingly, Alvin
Our Condolences to Richard and Shirley Levison on the loss of Shirl’s father in early May
WANTED!
A volunteer is required to manage the Club’s audio visual equipment.
Duties:
• Caretake the audio visual equipment including the PA system, data projector, and DVD player.
• Set up and pull down the equipment for club meetings and other events as required.
• Ensure all cords etc are obtained to ensure effective use of the equipment.
If you are interested please see any of the committee members. Bob Perry and Mike Williams can advise on
the equipment if necessary
Members Directory
postage, or give the Editor a $1.00 postage stamp!). If you preordered and have not got yours yet, see
Some people have complained that their details are not in the Directory. This means that you either ticked the
“NO” box or you ticked neither the “YES” or “NO” box in the section of the application form relating to
authorisation for listing in the members directory. If you wish to change your authorisation contact
Run Reports
Pre 1930 Run (Trevor Unsworth)
On Sunday April 7th Alby Grey (Marquette), David and Pam Moule (Oldsmobile)and Trevor Unsworth
(Chrysler) met at Surrey Downs shopping centre at 12:00, which is central to us, and headed of via North
east Rd. to the city and the Gathering on the old Netball courts on Anzac Hwy. Kaye Grey followed in a
modern which was to be picked up later.
There were over 50 vehicles including many Veterans and a huge variety of makes and models.
Graham Butler was also there in the REO and Ken and Iris Leeks were keen spectators.
A Veteran International of 1899 chugged around the courts offering rides of which Alby and his grandson
enjoyed.
As we were about to leave the starter motor on David's Oldsmobile decided to jam and he had to remove the
starter to allow a push start.
A great day for the older vehicles.
Police Museum Run, 23 rd April
45 members and friends attended to see a very interesting collection of Police Memorabilia providing a physical
view of the history and development of the force from inception to now. Highlights were the police vehicles, the
"Greys" including a 5 mth old foal and a sneak preview of items from the Tattoo (there was a rehearsal in the
Barracks). Scones, jam & cream finished the run nicely.
Thanks to Tony T for organising the run.. Again photos are courtesy of Trevor Unsworth
Tram Museum Run Sunday 24 May,
51 members departed from the GVC headed for St Kilda where we assembled in the car park for morning tea
before our tour of this very interesting Museum. As well as trams dating back to the 1800's there were
Trolley buses and plenty of memorabilia which drew many oohs and aahs as we recalled the various vehicles
which we travelled on or saw in our younger days.A ride on the No 282 to the town centre where we ate
lunch or an ice cream before the return journey to the museum.
It was a busy day for the museum staff as there were 2 other car clubs scheduled to visit later in the day.
(Morris register and Holden)
Thanks to Corrie for an interesting run.
Old Tailem Town Sunday 30th March (Bill Harris)
About 40 odd members left Gawler on time for "Old Tailem Town" a few Kms. north of Tailem Bend. There
was a mix of classic cars and modern on the run.
The day started overcast but shifted to warm as the day went on. There was ample time to get to Murray
Bridge for lunch at the Bridgeport Hotel for lunch. I see all enjoyed the pre booked meal, some had
forgotten what they ordered (inc.me) and seems like the chef had a couple of meals over. The soup was
especially tasty. (leek & potato)
After much chattering the group finally left around 1.30 pm for the short drive to the old town of the past.
We were greeted with a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits and given a guide to wander through the town at
leisure. The entrance was in the Murray Bridge Railway building1906. (only thing absent was the thick white
railway china cups & saucers).
There is almost 100 old buildings mostly from the start of this century set up through a few streets.
Some members felt the buildings were a bit dilapidated but these were buildings actually moved onto the site
from around the district, and frankly speaking I felt they were little better when in use.
To name a few buildings: Wonderview Cinema 1910, Murray Bridge Railways, Wolseley Church, Pub
House, Lameroo 1918, Bootmaker shop 1895 etc etc - but the most interesting building for the Club.was
the funeral parlour with the coffin maker in the right side and "the preparation room" on the left. I doubt if a
single club member didn't see the funeral parlour !
A very interesting piece of SA history that really should have more funds spent on it with perhaps a few
more staff to keep it in good condition. Members with their older vehicles were able to park their vehicles in
the "street" around the buildings.
Members left in dribs and drabs around 4pm for the respective journeys back.
The first Car from Adelaide to Dawin: The Aunger connection
By Alvin Jenkin
It is 100 years on 20 th August of this year since the first car to cross the Australian continent from Adelaide
to Darwin arrived in Darwin. The car was a 1908 25HP Talbot owned by Harry Dutton of Anlabbie Station,
Kapunda and driven and maintained by Murray Aunger , “one of the best Chauffeurs and mechanics in the
State” (The Express and Telegraph, 5 November 1907).
This year the National Motor Museum is taking the original
1908 Talbot that made the first crossing of the Australian
continent back out on the road again to complete the same
journey. The Talbot will be housed in a trailer with a portable
exhibition that will be on display over the duration of the trip.
The exhibition will take place over a period of 52 days - just
as the original journey did. It will also follow the same route
as closely as possible.
There are a number of opportunities to view the car and those
that occur close to Gawler are
As your editor, I have a particular interest in this event, as Horace Hooper Murray Aunger is a distant
relative. The Aunger family, and Edward Jenkin arrived in South Australia aboard the “Theresa” in 1847.
Edward took a liking to Marjorie Aunger on the trip from England and married her soon after arrival in SA.
Murray’s father, John, was Marjorie’s brother. The Aunger and Jenkin families settled at Lewiston and thus
are well within the coverage of the Gawler club , and the Aungers still occupy some of the original land
settled. Murray carried out much pioneering work in the automotive area in SA and originated the firm that
became Aunger Automotive Accessories which was quite successful until its demise about 10 years ago. The
name lives on as a brand name but is now owned by a Brisbane company.
Murray Aunger (1878-1953) was a talented and entrepreneurial engineer. He was also a successful
sportsman who held a number of cycling records. He served his apprenticeship in the Kilkenny workshops of
G. E. Fulton & Co., consulting engineers. He then joined the cycle works established by Vivian Lewis; they
later collaborated with Tom O'Grady in building the first petrol-driven motorcar in South Australia. Riding
Lewis bicycles, Aunger was the colony's one-mile (1.6 km) champion in 1899 and in 1901 held the
Australian record for fifty miles (80 km).
As co-driver and mechanic, Aunger made two attempts with Henry Hampden Dutton of Anlabbie Station,
Kapunda to be the first to cross Australia from south to north by motorcar. They left Adelaide in Dutton's
Talbot (known affectionately as Angelina) on 25 November 1907; Darwin lay almost 2100 miles (3380 km)
away. Obstacles confronted them on long sections of the route: rivers, treacherous sandhills and boulderstrewn
country had to be traversed which no modern motorist
would tackle without the advantage of four-wheel drive..
There was considerable interest in their expedition, below is an
excerpt from an article in an Adelaide paper in the lead up to the
crossing
The Express and Telegraph, 5 November 1907
"Mr HH Dutton, son of Mr Henry Dutton, accompanied by Mr
HM Aunger, one of the best Chauffeurs and mechanics in the
State has resolved to journey from south to north across South
Australia in a 20-24 hp Clement-Talbot car, specially constructed
to carry sufficient provisions and petrol to take the motorists
through the country that must be traversed.
GVVCVC Journal June 2008 Page 12

Many difficulties will have to be surmounted in the way of sand and thick scrub, to say nothing of the
tropical rains, but Mr Dutton and his companion are confident that the car will meet any reasonable demands
on its capabilities."
The pinion in the Talbot's differential collapsed south of Tennant Creek and the vehicle had to be abandoned
with the onset of the wet season. Dutton and Aunger returned on horseback to the railhead at Oodnadatta,
South Australia, and thence to Adelaide.
It was a reverse, not a defeat. Determined to try again when the rains ended, Dutton bought a larger and more
powerful 25HP Talbot. With Aunger, he left Adelaide on 30 June 1908. At Alice Springs, Ern Allchurch
joined the team. Beyond Alice Springs, the partners met the pioneering cyclist Francis Birtles (who is a
story on his own, apart from riding bicycles all over Australia he made the first west- east crossing of the
continent in 1912 in a single cylinder Brush car and in 1928 he was the first person to drive from London to
Melbourne using a Bean car.).Tennant Creek was reached in thirty days; the stranded car was repaired,
driven in convoy to Pine Creek and freighted by train to Darwin. Continuing their journey by car, the
trailblazers reached their destination on 20 August. Both cars and the adventurers returned to Adelaide by
ship.
Francis Birtles next to the Talbot
Two historic motor cars - Three brave men, made it to the
furthest point north of the journey - the beaches of
Darwin.
Exactly where they left her, they found the first vehicle "Angelina" - untouched in 7 months.
They replaced the broken universal joint, filled her with petrol, and spun the starter handle.
She started first time and away they went towards Barrow Creek
Naturally, with cars being so rare, there were no service stations, so fuel had to be sent ahead by rail and with
the cameleers who serviced the outback with supplies. Afghan cameleers with lines of camels were a
common sight in Australia’s deserts before there were trucks to carry goods. In 1907, one of the petrol cans
was left in the sun and exploded, which meant that there was not enough fuel to reach the next stop, and the
car had to be loaded onto the train to reach the next fuel drop in Oodnadatta.Donkeys were also used by the
travellers to pull them out of bogs and sand.
The earlier Talbot was sold to a family in Kapunda, and was destroyed in a shed fire at Port Broughton. The
later Talbot has been preserved and is housed in the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. This is the one
being shown in the travelling display this year.
Ernest Allchurch was a keen photographer, and today we
are indebted to him for a collection of photos of the
second crossing attempt. These photographs were
processed in Alice Springs by Ern’s wife, Bessie, who
was also a talented photographer. Ern was a school days
friend of Harry Dutton and worked at the Alice Springs
Telegraph Station, He later became the Officer-in-charge
at Hergott Springs telegraph station (now Marree) and
later was in charge of the Alice Springs station.. He also
assisted the first crossing attempt by arranging fuel dumps
etc. On the second attempt he also made daily contact
with newspapers and family by tapping into the Overland
Telegraph line. It is interesting how Ern, the keen
photographer features in many of the photos taken on the
trip!
Speed-record attempts between Australia's capital cities received wide publicity. In 1909 Murray Aunger
accompanied Robert Barr Smith in his Napier which set a new time for the Adelaide-Melbourne journey, but
they held the record for only a few weeks. Aunger regained it in February 1914, driving a Prince Henry
Vauxhall with F. Bearsley; they attained speeds of over 80 miles per hour (129 km/h) on the pipeclay of the
Coorong. They next broke the Adelaide-Broken Hill record in the same car.
In 1922 Aunger joined an expedition of three Dort cars that
travelled from Adelaide to Darwin and back; the party included his
brother Cyril as co-mechanic, Samuel White (a famed ornithologist,
who financed the expedition) and a local parliamentarian Thomas
McCallum who explored the possibilities for settlement along their
route and for a north south railway During this trip Murray drove
an open topped Dort motorcar across Newcastle Waters on the way
to Port Darwin. Aunger had no choice but to take the cars through
the flooded waters almost totally submerged. Amazingly he had all
three cars running smoothly within 30 minutes.
GVVCVC Journal June 2008 Page 14

They made the crossing to Port Darwin in 30 days, and return to Adelaide by a circuitous route through
Cloncurry, the River Darling, and Mount Gambier, in all covering 8800 kilometres.
The following year he led another party along the same route for the South Australian government. In 1926
he led the 16 vehicles on the ‘RESO’ tour overland to Alice Springs.
When he left Lewis Cycle Works in 1909, Murray Aunger established Murray Aunger Ltd which held
franchises for several well-known cars (including the Newton Bennett featured in the December 2007 edition
of the Journal). In 1925 Chief Commissioner W.A Webb persuaded him to become motor engineer with the
South Australian Railways on an annual salary of £1000. There had been a large increase in the use of
motors in the railways and Webb had also commenced bus services to various parts of the State. A number
of politicians believed that Aunger (previously an agent for railcars bought by the S.A.R.) had received
favoured treatment from Webb. Aunger twice visited Britain and the United States of America for the S.A.R.
In 1930 Webb returned to America. For several years attempts were made in political circles to wreak petty
revenge upon Aunger, despite his having played an important part in rehabilitating the State's railway
system. He was dismissed in June 1937 for contravening section 37 of the South Australian Railways
Commissioner's Act (1936); cabinet rejected his application for two months long service leave. In 1942 he
married a widow Eileen Victoria, née Scott, late Woods, at the Congregational Church, North Adelaide.
They moved to Melbourne. Aunger died on 14 September 1953 at Mordialloc in Victoria.
