collective families at this time. We will all miss Marryanne’s joyful outlook and cheeky disposition.. The
memorial service was held on 25 th November.
Condolences also go to Kym and Tessa McArdle on the loss of Kym’s father, and to Rod Zerk and
Lynette Bootsma and families on the loss of Rod and Lynette’s mother.
Several club members have been roaming. Tony and Barbara Hayton have spent 3 months wandering
around the world, and celebrated the arrival of a new grand daughter in New Zealand. Kym and Tessa Mc
Ardle have been to the USA. Kym has almost worn out his US Marines Cap. Colin and Jenny McCracken
have been to Europe: How was the shearing Colin?
Lorraine Bywater is proud of the fact that she has lost 104cm. Not quite sure what that means but does it
now mean that she can go topless in the MG and no one will notice?
Federation at the GVVCVC October Meeting
Steve Henderson, President of the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs of SA, and Arthur Doecke who
assists with Historic Registration were present at our October general meeting. The following notes of
interest arose.
• The last date for vehicles eligible for historic registration will be set at 1 Jan 1979. This will come
into place by March 2012. The Government is keen to do this as there are some 17,000 vehicles
manufactured between 1979 and 1982 still on full rego on the road, and the transfer of these vehicles
to historic rego will result in a significant revenue loss (not to mention additional administration
costs). LHD vehicle dating will line up with historic rego. Any vehicles up to 1982 can currently
obtain (and retain) conditional registration, but this must be finalised by the end of February 2012.
• All vehicles on conditional registration must be presented for verification by club registrars annually.
If a vehicle is not presented, the owner must make a Statutory Declaration that the vehicle is
compliant with the Code of Practice.
• DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure) will be carrying out spot checks on
conditionally registered vehicles, and have the option to do a full audit if necessary to ensure
conformance with the code.
• The proposal to create a SIV (Special Interest Vehicle) code and registration scheme has gone to
cabinet and is expected to be implemented early in 2012
• The club can provide input to a revision of the Code of Practice. This must be in by 30 Nov. (The
GVVCVC Committee has noted comments made at the meeting and is responding to the Federation)
• Club Registrars sign documentation during verification confirming that owners are financial members
of the club. It is not their responsibility to check that Rego is current.
• Registration expiry dates can easily be checked by going online to the Easy Reg site
http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transport,%20travel%20and%20motoring/EzyReg and clicking on
“Check Registration expiry date”. This also tells you if the vehicle is on Historic Rego.
• There are cameras everywhere checking rego plates for currency and the revenue raising is very
active.
• If a vehicle is running on a day permit, remove the number plates. Otherwise the cameras or police
will record the vehicle as being unregistered and penalties will be imposed (and will have to be
defended)
Run Reports
Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to
report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting
and is on the web site home page by clicking the “Run report template” button . Reports should include some statistics
on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by
the Editor and the Webmaster.
Run Reports have been sadly lacking for this edition, and the editor has none for the following events which
I believe were well attended:
ST KILDA TRAMWAY MUSEUM Wed October 19 th Bruce and Anne Williams
Members from the Gawler district and members from the southern
areas (Mexicans) met at the St Kilda Hotel carpark at about 1100h
for a chat. Some went into the hotel for a counter lunch and they
were happy with the meal provided. Others drove around to the park
opposite the playground to partake of a picnic lunch under one of the
large shelters.
The weather was good but perhaps a little on the warm side with a
temp of 35c and a northerly breeze, almost enough to keep away the
flies and way too much for the reputed mossies although they are
usually about at dawn and dusk.
It was noted that a large bus arrived at the playground and a lot of small children alighted to walk to the
seaside and play in the free playground. This bus was from Mildura and was probably the first time that
some of the children had seen the seaside.
St Kilda is a pleasant seaside village with a permanent population of 100 residents but this rises to around
2000 on some weekends with fishermen and holiday makers.
The club members assembled at the Tramways Museum
at 1300h and were given a brief history of tram
activities throughout the metro areas. The group were
able to enjoy Tram rides to the seaside park and back.
At present the Tramways Museum is undergoing a
major revamp due to white ants destroying a large
shelter shed for the historic trams. A new shed will
appear soon
A group of Motor home people are at present living on
site to protect the exposed trams and to stop pilfering of
property including copper cables.
Afternoon tea was provided by volunteers in the shade of pine trees at the rear of the museum.
We believe that members attending enjoyed their day out and thanks is given to those that organized this day
out and to those attending.
Thanks to Anthony Argall and
Margaret Raggatt for the
photos.
The tramcar on immediate left
is of the same style as 190
which is a beach house at Pt
Parham next to the Jenkin
Residence
“LOOK & LEARN” RUN.. Sun. Oct. 30 th . 2011. Trevor Bellchambers
Around 40 Members met at the Fasta Pasta Car Park area where the information sheet and maps were
distributed for the days adventure.
Following Map 1. we made our way to the National Military Vehicle Museum, off Sturton Road, Elizabeth
Parks. Our group was welcomed by two of the dedicated Museum Members then divided into two groups for
the guided tour. The group I was in went into the Museum and we were given a very descriptive talk about
each vehicle as we inspected them. They restore many of the vehicles themselves to running order and most
of the exhibits were fully functional with some being taken out for public display. The vehicles ranged from
historic horse drawn carts, a cute little Austin Staff Car, Bren Gun Carrier, Ferret Armoured vehicle, a huge
GMC Recovery Vehicle and a host of other special military purpose vehicles. In one large display area there
were communication radios of all ages and sizes.
There was a room displaying models of aircraft, tanks and battle scenes.
The were many displays behind glass including a mannequin dressed in a WW1 Nurses uniform that had
been donated by the owner.
When our group went outside we viewed a shed full of interesting vehicles awaiting restoration. In another
shed they were well on the way with the restoration of a light US tank with new rear mounted radial motor
and it has a 37mm cannon. A most interesting museum, a work in progress by a band of dedicated exservicemen
and friends.
For our BYO lunch we were guided to a picnic area with shade, tables and chairs and a chance to relax and
chat.
Following Map 2 we then proceeded to the nearby Penfield Model Engineers Club where we were guided to
car parking areas reserved for us and they had kindly erected a double shelter with chairs that was reserved
for our Club. They had at least 8 model trains running that were pulled by a wide range of engines including
two steam locos. There is a 1.2 km. track and one simply lines up and when you reach the front of the line
you hop aboard and enjoy the ride. There is a large shallow lake for the model power boats of all descriptions
and speeds and a few very nervous ducks. The powered racing cars give you the same dusting of mud pellets
and track debris as the real racing cars at Virginia. They are powered by motors similar to whipper snippers
and go like the clappers.
The park is fully catered with every thing one needs for an afternoon out. It is open on the last Sunday each
month from 12:00 to 4:30 pm. and on the second Saturday evening, 6:00 – 9:30 pm. during daylight saving
months.
A fun place for little children and big kids to visit. Sincere thanks to all who attended.
BAROSSA SCENTS & TREASURES RUN..Wed. Nov. 16 th . Trevor Bellchambers
Participants were greeted at the car park and given the Information Sheet for the Run. Our first stop was at
the Lyndoch Village Green, opposite the Lyndoch Bakery for a leisurely morning tea. At around 10:30 we
headed through Lyndoch and made our way in convoy to the Lyndoch Lavender Farm. A $2 entry fee got
you a help-yourself cuppa and a chance to wander around the property, read the information signs, admire
the views or just sit in the shade and relax. The Lavender Shop had a host of Lavender based goods for sale
including scented soaps, lotions, biscuits, wine, etc, etc, etc. The products on offer created a lot of interest
and sales.
At 11:40 we followed the road on through very picturesque countryside and joined the Barossa Highway a
couple of kms. out of Rowland Flat. We were due at the Tanunda Club at noon for our lunch booking. I
really enjoyed my lunch as I hope everyone else did. A few more Members joined us at lunch for the after
lunch visit.
At 1:30 we assembled and drove in convoy just along Basedow
Road to the Office and shed complex owned by Carl Lindner. We
were guided into his display area next to his office and Carl was
introduced to everyone. He gave an explanation re some of the
vehicles on display which included 4 E Type Jaguars and Daimler
V8 Mk.2 on one side and an XJS, XK 140, XK 120, 1932 SS 1
(first car produced by Jaguar and one of only 16 left in the world..
one of which is in my shed), an open-wheeler racing car based on a
1937 SS Jaguar with a Ford V8 motor “Big Red” and a replica of
the famous “Black Bess” which won the only Barossa Grand Prix
many years ago.
GVVCVC Journal December 2011 Page 7

In an adjacent room there were 3 Mk. 2. Jaguars and we were taken
to another shed and I think we were stunned to see a D Type and C
Type Jaguar, both beautifully constructed replicas of the Grand Prix
winning Jaguar racing cars that really did a lot to make Jaguar very
successful. There were 3 more E Types, even an MGB (miniature
Jaguar?) and a most impressive V12 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe.
Through an opening to an adjoining storage shed there were more
Jaguars, XJ6, XJ12, Mk 10, Mk. 2s, XK 150 (my dream car), a
couple of restored trucks, an early Garford and a Bedford. Out the
back was the spare parts storage area. I know Carl has other sheds
and cars that I hope to explore sometime.
Carl has a most impressive collection, an excellent display area
with his restored to perfection cars and the atmosphere is enhanced
by framed photos and pictures, restored bowsers and oil dispensers.
A credit to you Carl and our sincere thanks for the opportunity to
view this wonderful collection. I understand your passion.
Bring Your Car night November 15 th
A very pleasant evening brought out a large number of vehicles and people to our annual bring your car night
Barbeque. A number of interesting vehicles new to the club were on display, and the BBQ was well catered
by our catering group. The following meeting was addressed by representatives from the Federation.
Following and on the back page is a selection of vehicles having an airing, demonstrating the large variety of
interests in our club.
Twilight Run Friday 25 th November El Editore
The evening was dull and misty when about 18 cars and 40 people gathered at the TAFE Car park. It was
good to see some different vehicles on the run, due no doubt to the fact that the “non retired’s” were able to
attend after their days employment. Mike Williams took charge and advised all present to find their way to
Bethany Reserve either via Lyndoch or Gomersal Road.
At Bethany we crashed a Christmas function and met up with a few who had gone directly to the reserve.
Mike provided advice on the run which included “If you get to Eden Valley you have gone too far, If you get
to Truro, you have gone too far, and if you get to Swan Hill you have gone too far”. Hopefully those who
were heading that way woke up before they got to Waikerie!
Mike handed out the run sheets, and absolute confusion reined! There were 2 runs on a loop through pleasant
back roads in the eastern Barossa Hills, each going in opposite directions. The signs were intriguing, watch
out for Echidnas and Blue Wrens, and then watch out for people. Fortunately we missed all of these potential
hazards. A certain yellow Pontiac was observed to do a U turn mid run due to following the car in front
which was on a different run, and being confused because his instructions were different. Brian relieved the
stress afterwards with a huge Pizza which would feed an ordinary mortal for a
week. Bellys Beemer was observed at least 4 times in the run, whereas the
instructions should have given one sighting. Observers put this down to Tony
Hayton being the navigator, but both Trevor and Tony were insistent that Lyn
and Barbara were doing the navigating.
Having completed the run loops we were directed to the Cucina Banco
restaurant at Nuriootpa where coffee and cake was made available (or a more
substantial meal for those who had not eaten), and fellowship was raucous. That
Gawler mob are a noisy lot. Meanwhile Mike shot through to Black Point.
Thanks Mike for an interesting evening, and the opportunity once again to meet
with folks of like interest
THE LIFE & TIMES OF GERRY PETRUS
Life began in Holland (1948). My parents had
aspirations to migrate to Australia, so in 1957 at
the age of 8 we arrived in the “Promised Land.”
First at the Woodside and Glenelg Migrant Hostels
and then (after a couple of years) they were able to
secure a home of their own, in the new city of
Elizabeth. They worked many jobs to provide a
good home and a solid education for 4 children.
The Elizabeth Boys Technical High School gave
me my Secondary Education. Jobs were easy to
find as were apprenticeships, so I started my trade
training as a Fitter and Turner in 1966 for the
Weapons Research Establishment at Salisbury. It
was my desire to become a Mechanical Draftsman.
Immediately after the 4 year apprenticeship I landed a job as a Detail Draftsman for Norman Wright
Containers in Port Adelaide.
My after work entertainment was music, and for many years I played drums in local Adelaide bands (the
Notions, Beau Gestes and Carolina). At age 19, I was married (first time). Apprentice rates made life a
struggle in a Housing Trust rental accommodation with 3 young children. I continued my post trade studies
(and played Music to boost the income) and in the late 70’s I was awarded the Production Technician’s
Certificate from the Department of Further Education. Work at the Container business was slowing down
and I was made redundant. Rheem Australia took me on as a Production Manager making drums and pales,
then in 1980 I started work for British Aerospace Australia as a Production Technician. During this period, I
met Karen, and we were married in 1980 (my second time).
Motor cars, up till now, were a 1960 Morris Major (I bought from my Father) an FC station wagon and an
XR Falcon, 3 kids during the day and a drum kit at night called for large wheels. The apprentice years gave
me a yearning for MG’s, and it was not until the early 90’s that a shiny red MGB took my fancy....but that is
a whole new story. Motorbikes were also of interest, first a Honda 250 and then a Suzuki 650. Bikes and I
were not a good mix, as 2 small accidents left me thinking cars were a lot safer.
By the early 80’s, 2 of my 3 kids (oldest 2) came to live with us. Karen worked at WRE and I was still at
BAe, until 1987 when I was again made redundant. I soon found work at Perry Engineering (Mile End) and
after 2 years left to join the Submarine Corporation as a Senior Hull Planner. This is when the MGB enters
the story again, as I was driving that car every day from Salisbury Heights to Osborne. I knew the Submarine
Project only had a limited life and in 1995 I left to work for Steel Tank and Pipe as their State Manager. In
1998 I moved back to BAe Systems as a Planner/Scheduler.
It was around this time in my life that I was introduced to the GVV&CV Club by my good friend (the late)
Rick McInerney (whom I met in Rotary). We enjoyed our cars and the Gawler Car Club gave us the
opportunities to take them out and share the passion. The Ballarat and Bendigo Swap meets were always first
on our annual calendar of “MUST DO” events. We often talked about doing the Swap meets in America.
Since the MGB, I have increased the stable with two more, namely a 1969 Daimler MK2 and a 1955 MG TF.
Both are in need of some TLC right now, but a few summer nights in the shed should fix all of that. The
MGB is now fully restored to its 1966 glory.
I still work at BAe Systems, albeit only 3 days per week now, and Karen is currently working for Hewlett
Packard as IT Security Delivery Manager. My 3 kids have since grown up, and are having fun raising their
own families. We have 7 Grandchildren (one of whom has inherited my drum kit). Most of our weekends are
busy catching up with them. The photo above was taken on Fathers Day with the “Magnificent 7”
COVER STORY
THE FX 3 AUSTIN LONDON TAXI
Made in 1956, Mike Johnson’s London taxi sees more time in the
workshop than on the road, but that was not always the case. They
were designed to work in London with three shifts of eight hours a
day, only off the road for repairs and maintenance. Consequently,
there are no locks on the doors, as theoretically there would always
be a driver with the vehicle. The only lock on the vehicle was on the
toolbox on the side.
Custom made for the London trade, the FX 3 Austin taxi was
designed for the days of ocean going liners when people travelled
with lots of luggage. This model was the last one to have this
luggage space, as air travel became more the norm. A large space
alongside the driver was the right size for a cabin trunk and several
suitcases. The cabin was large and spacious designed for two adults
and two children in pull down seats.
Made from 1949 to 1958 there were just 7,267 of the FX3 model made by Austin. Originally made with
either a petrol or a diesel motor, in the later years the choice of the owner drivers for diesel meant only these
were made.
London streets are not wide and the taxi has a turning circle of just 25 feet. Changing a tyre in a narrow street
was also made easier with a built in jacking system, which was the only hydraulics on the vehicle; all other
controls were either cable or rod.
Inspected annually by the metropolitan police force to ensure their safety they were considered to be one of
the safest vehicles on the road with self sealing petrol tanks and very stable weighing in at 28 and half
hundred weight.
After a major crash they automatically lost their
licence to operate and at the age of ten years again
they automatically lost the licence and were taken off
the road. In most cases then the custom built body
was removed and the chassis converted into a small
lorry.
This taxi was bought in England and then brought
out to Australia via a trip across America. Here for
several years it was used as a wedding car and when
bought via Bill Johnson in the mid eighties it was not
in a running condition. Its stable mate went to
Norfolk island for use in the tourist industry but there
would be very few if any others of this model on
mainland Australia.
had to leave early as the headlights were not working!)
Thanks Mike, for the story. Next edition we will feature Howard Locking’s Morris Oxford. Members are
encouraged to provide the story of their vehicle or their life for the Journal. Lyn Mitchell will do a life
profile if you talk to her. The Brits are monopolysing this at the moment, so a couple of stories on
American or European vehicles would not go amiss.
