The Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club
Annual Dinner and Presentation night
This was held on 18 th August at the new venue of the Gawler Jockey
Club. This was the ideal venue with reasonable sound quality to
enhance the great music of “Holly and the Buddies” (but they were
without “Holly”). (I believe that past President Mark was asked who
the band was, and since he could not remember he looked at the front
of the Bass Drum and reported back that they were called “Pearl”). All
reports were that the dance floor was great.
The club has video screens distributed on all walls and these are
coupled to a central computer system. As a result we were able to
screen photos of club events in an unobtrusive manner such that they
were visible to all those present. The quality was much better than we
were able to achieve at the Gawler Arms.
Since the venue is new there are still some learnings to occur, and the
delivery of meals needs to be improved for future events. However the
delays gave great opportunities for those sitting at tables to
communicate with each other.
Past President Mark Chapman announced that the President’s Award
for 2011/2012 went to Fred Chapman for the great work he did in
organising events during the year, in particular the June Long
Weekend event at Mount Gambier. Since Fred was not present at the
dinner, the actual award was presented to him at the August General
meeting.
Martin Stephens was presented with the Hard Luck Award for his
adventure with a runaway caravan at Mount Gambier. It is
demonstrative of a good year for members in that this particular
adventure did not result in any damage to man or machine, and that no
more serious events were reported to be in the running for the award.
Various members who organised events during the year were
presented with a bottle of wine of their choice from a selection. (note
for future presentations, What about an option for teetotallers?)
92 members enjoyed a great night out. Thanks to Paul and Marianne
Modra for organising the event
Dare I mention that the butter was cold and hard, but a couple of
unique methods were developed to soften it. The editor had trouble
keeping abreast of it. Eileen said that " Butter would not melt in my
mouth, but it might if I put it somewhere else!"
Membership Report
Over the last few months we have had a number of new members accepted into the club. These include:
Frances Bills of Gawler East who has an MGB and VW Beetle
Michael Zerk of Sheaok Log
Ivo Trinchini of Willaston who has a Vauxhall Velox
Alan and Barbara Tickner of Surrey Downs who have a MGB
Brian and Sue Inskip of Gawler South who have a couple of Ford Prefects
Leslie Jolly of Paradise who has a Datsun 1600
John Ide of Tanunda who has a BMW 2002
Martin and Margaret Lindsell/McKenney of Blakeview with a MGB
Alan Spencer of Gawler East who has a Dodge
Mike and Mary Osborne of Ardrossan who declare caretaking an Alvis, a Bristol, Triumph TR4A
and a MGB
George Cooke of Surrey Downs who runs a Holden FB Ute
The way MGBs are coming into the club they will soon out number Holden’s!
Welcome to all these new members. We look forward to seeing you out and about with your vehicles
We have also lost 26 memberships from people who have not renewed memberships. Some of these were
very long term members and we are sorry to see them go. Age and mortality catches up with us all after a
while.
At the end of August our membership stood at 302 consisting of 120 single memberships and 182 joint
memberships giving a total member count of 484.
Please record your attendances at events and meetings
All members please note that all persons attending club events (including general meetings) must record their
attendances on the run sheets or in the attendance book. Please print your name in a legible manner in
BLOCK LETTERS in the appropriate place, and then sign.
There are 2 good reasons to do this. Most importantly you are covered by club insurance should the
untoward happen, and also your attendance is recorded to ensure that you meet the club attendance
requirements for continuing membership
Changes to club appointments contact information
Please note that some club contacts have changed in the last couple of months. This is now reflected on page
2 of the Journal and page 2 of the Members Directory
Alan Kempster, Club Registrar, has removed any reference to his mobile, which is never turned on. His best
contact is 8562 8651
Ron Stephens, membership secretary has cancelled his land line and can now be contacted either on his
mobile 0417 848 541 or email cabby115@bigpond.com.
Colin Curtis, Federation Representative has cancelled his land line and can now be contacted only by
mobile 0439 819 943.
Both Ron and Colin have cited difficulty in understanding foreign telemarketers as contributing to their decision. The
Editor is sympathetic, having received 3 offers from Microsoft Technical support in 2 days, despite being on the “Do
Not Call” Register. Unfortunately, mobiles do not work well at Port Parham, so please call the Editor on 8529 2504 in
the first instance, do not call his mobile.
For those not in the know, calls from “Microsoft Technical Support” are a scam. They seek access to your computer,
introduce a virus, and request money from you to “fix” it. Sylvia knows when I get a call. After the phone is slammed
down, she says “Was that Microsoft again?”. If you get such calls, just hang up on them.
Restoration workshops
The restoration workshops on the restoration of the Triumph Dolomite are going
well All club members are encouraged to get involved by tackling the cleaning
and restoration of parts. The car has been reduced to 3 major portions and at the
October workshop the front and rear subassemblies will be dismantled and the
main body will be ready for paint stripping and preparation for repainting. If you
can bring stripping tools this will be of advantage. The strippers offered at the
September meeting are of little practical use!
Club members are encouraged to bring 10 drink containers of the 10c deposit
type to each general meeting. In 4 meetings we will have paid for 4 tyres if all get
involved.
Restoration workshops occur at Trevor Evan’s shed 114 Bassnet Road,
Run Reports
Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to
report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting
and is on the web site home page by clicking the “Run report template” button . Reports should include some statistics
on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by
the Editor and the Webmaster.
Lobethal Mannum and Mypolonga Sunday 29th July Bruce and Anne Williams
Around 40 club members participated in the above run where the first stop was
Lobethal and as usual at this time of the year the weather was slightly cool and a fine
drizzle settled in . Fred had arranged for us to see a collection of historic vehicles
owned by the Bierhaus Brewery and my favourite was a beautiful Hudson Terraplane
From there we travelled through Mt Torrens to Palmer and Mannum a very scenic
route at any time. I think how lucky we are having such great drives so close to home.
At Mannum we mostly had lunch under cover on the waterfront reserve watching the
water traffic and socialised. After lunch some walked the main street dodging a slight
drop of the wet stuff for a look around the shops etc. Later we all travelled to
Mypolonga to see a display of vehicles owned by one of Fred’s Mates and guess
what? they were mainly Graham Paiges. We had afternoon tea there and admired the
many vehicles on display Fred gave a vote of thanks from the club to Marlene & Alan
Haggar for their display and Gavin Launer gave a vote of thanks
from the club in appreciation of Fred and Noelines effort as events
director and all agreed that he has done a great job. After this we all
made our way home
We had Mike & Mary Osborne plus Molly the dog following
behind us but as we came over the top of Checker Hill { between
Gumeracha & Kersbrook } I lost sight of them and went back only
to find their TR4 on the side of this very windy bit of road with a
collapsed front passenger side suspension and some body damage. I
Think that they should buy a lottery ticket as this situation could
have been very nasty. The Moules and us stayed until the towtruck
loaded their car onboard which was a bit tricky too, taking a few
hours and not sure at this time if they are getting it returned to
Ardrossan.
A long Day for them but Molly didnt mind and was very relaxed, so
now she tells her story!
MOLLY”S BIG DAY OUT
Well, with my Mum and Dad having bought the TR4A a while back, I’m always looking
for trips out as the back seat passenger. In a little over a year, the little car has covered
about 8000 kms. Dad keeps it as clean underneath as on the top, so I have to watch my
feet and my hairs! Of our three cars, this is the best one for me to look out from too.
Recently we headed off to meet our friends from the Gawler VVCCC for a trip to
Mannum and Mypolonga. That meant an early start for the 125km to Gawler, arriving
about 9 AM .with a comfort and fuel stop at Dublin. As I wag my tail a lot, I’m fairly well
known and perhaps I’ll get my own red name badge soon. A nice man call Fred always
has everything under control and before long we were enjoying a stop at Lobethal. I had a nap in the car
while Mum and Dad had a good look as some Dodge open wheelers, a nice Chev roadster and a big blue car,
a Terraplane perhaps. I’d have been lost in that car! These cars were in a building that was marked the Bier
Haus and I wondered how long they’d all be in brewery, especially as we’d met up with Bruce and Anne
Williams in their TR7. ( No seat for me in one of those!)
Then we were on to Mannum, via Birdwood where I’ve been lots of times. Sometimes I’ve sneaked in on the
Bay to Birdwood Runs when I’m not supposed to, but as I’m better behaved than lots of kids, people are
generally kind to me. Mannum was good, as we all sat around and I got fed some tit bits. Then I had a walk
along the edge of the River Murray. Next we took a fair drive to Mypolonga. This was great place for me as I
love to look at alpacas and sheep. However Dad was taken by the beautiful collection of cars owned by the
hosts, Alan and Marlene Hagger. They also had a nice dog, so we had a few sniffs together, but I figured all
the lovely afternoon tea on offer was too fattening for me. Down in the shed there were some other old cars
GVVCVC Journal October 2012 Page 8

that had not been restored and I think the 1957 Dodge ute would have been a great car to have. However,
Alan Hagger has retained a lot of vehicles owned by his father and grandfather which have a great story.
Fred’s Graham Paige was parked next to one of the Hagger’s GP cars, but Dad loved a sports coupe version
that would have suited me too. One lady was asking lots of questions about round rubber things at the back
of a red Chev roadster. I’d have known there were the stepping points to get into the dickey seat- what a
great ride that would be! Elsewhere, my Mum admired the lovely outfits owned and worn by Mrs Hagger
when she travels in the old cars. Just as we were leaving, Fred gave the Haggers a thank you gift and I
counted 41 people and 19 cars in the car park. I did count the sheep in the paddock too- and nearly fell
asleep.
We had a fair way to travel home, so along with the Moules, we followed the Williams’ TR7 back through
Palmer and into Birdwood. Bruce put a move on and we were not sure which way he’d go home. Before too
long we’d turned up a new road for me, Checker Hill Road. This got steeper and steeper and Dad was
wiggling the gearlever a lot, when suddenly there was noise and the car came quickly to a halt. I knew
something was wrong and glad we’d be going fairly slow and just got off the winding road.
Dad knew something was amiss and fortunately the Williams’ came back to
help, but it was certain we’d be going home in something other than the
TR4. The Moules and some other nice people came to help and after about
an hour, the RAA tow truck arrived. I was feeling tired and had a nap in the
car. Being doggy people, my Mum and Dad pay the top RAA membership,
so as to get the car themselves and me back home, but we’ve never used the
service before. The men walked up and down the road, looking for anything
that might have fallen off, but only found a rubber washer.
The tow truck man, Barry, came from Forreston, but he had to get the truck
from Birdwood. A Ranger had come along in a vehicle with red and blue
lights like Dad has on the ambulance, so that warned people of the traffic
hazard. With lots of Gawler Club people, the Ranger and the tow truck
driver, the car was put on the tilt tray and we started to head to Ardrossan.
Barry, our driver was hoping to feed his horses before the long trip, but
managed to find a friend to help him out collecting some hay. I was in the
back of the crew cab, all nice and warm, but Dad sat up the front talking
about horses and dogs to our driver. Barry managed to grab a pie and a
drink for his tea when he stopped for fuel. By 9 PM we were near
Ardrossan and Dad called his friend with the garage, so as to get the car put
away for the night. We all thanked Barry and he headed back off to
Birdwood.
I was really tired when I got in and I slept OK, but I knew that Dad kept thinking about what had broken on
the car. Mum asked him if he’d fiddled with anything, but he said, “No” Next day, he found that it was not
his fault, but due to a part that had not been replaced, event though it was all clean and shiny. Dad has
ordered lots of bits to fix both sides of the car up as new, so that will mean a few less biscuits for me I guess.
Anyway, it was a bit of an adventure and we all said that it reminded us there are a lot of nice people about.
I reckon my “ Paws for Thought” is that however clean and shiny something looks on the outside, you never
know what’s underneath.
Collingrove Run Wednesday22 nd August Bruce Williams
Run to Victor Harbor.Sunday 26 th August Barbara McLellan
The first touch of spring gave around 22 people an enjoyable, warm and sunny day at
Victor Harbor on Sunday, 26 August. Some used their Heritage listed cars while
others travelled in their conventional cars for the 300km plus round trip, mostly
leaving from Gawler. However Ron and I caught up with the group at O'Halloran
Hill for morning tea at Cafe Buongiorno where there was a special tea/coffee and
cake deal! We all travelled on to Victor Harbor along the road through Mt. Compass
without seeing much traffic going either way, arriving around noon. Parking along
the foreshore proved a bit difficult with some having to pay for the privilege. We
were able to purchase food at any of the local shops or provide our own BYO picnic
lunch to eat looking at the calm ocean. Several people caught the 1.30pm diesel-
drawn Cockle train to Goolwa and return while others shopped or did their own
thing.
Ron and I caught the horse-drawn tram to Granite Island and had a look around there
before walking back in the sunshine across the causeway to enjoy a huge double
'Scoops' icecream - a must do tradition when we visit Victor Harbor! People
travelled home along various routes after a relaxing and enjoyable day.
Old Car Day, Saturday September 1 st
The first day of spring and it was just that, a fabulous day full of spring sunshine after a
cool start, and about 200 old vehicles came together at Bethany Reserve to give their
owners the opportunity to blow away the cobwebs. Vehicles on display were many and
varied from a 1912 De Dion Bouton out to celebrate its 100th birthday, an early T model
Ford, several vehicles of the 1920’s era, through to relative moderns of the 50’s 60’s and
70’s including an International Truck and other vehicles from the Bordertown club, and
about 40 vehicles from the Morris register and the Morris Minor club.
We had some visitors from a Vintage Caravan club who coincidently were holding a rally at Tanunda
Caravan Park, and one of the NARC members rolled up with a Simca Aronde wagon towing a teardrop
caravan.
The De Dion Bouton resulted in some discussion at our September meeting with some
indicating that there was only one De Dion recorded in SA and that is a 1904 model, so this
must have been it. The vehicle at this day was definitely a 1912 model and is owned by club
member Clive Hill and features on our front cover this issue. For the record here is a picture
of a 1904 model.
Thanks to those who volunteered to act as parking marshalls, and to the tea persons for keeping the cuppa
going. Brian Cox and Barry Bywater were there bright and early to fire up the urn and to gather wood to get
the fireplace blazing. The GVVCV ran 3 runs as usual, with the Gawler run travelling via Lyndoch with the
Bordertown club in tow, the Mallala run started a bit empty but met up with the MAPS mob at Freeling and
the Elizabeth run as usual excelled itself with the Monte Carlo like Old Car Day stickers causing much envy
among other participants.
Old Car Day Elizabeth Run Martin Stephens
Fifty four people, in thirty one vehicles, assembled at Fremont Park to
join in with the southern contingent of our run to Bethany Park. Despite
the somewhat extended start time most met up again at Doncho’s Café in
the Virginia Nursery. This was not a secret destination - we simply prefer
everyone on our run to “start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place
to start,” at least according to Julie Andrews.
Unfortunately the A40 leading the way (David and June Kent) developed a fuel blockage and was
subsequently towed home by Norm and Judy Matthews’ Plymouth Cranbrook; both couples rejoining us
later as we continued through Gawler and Lyndoch.
Anyway, the Virginia stop allowed time for breakfast (and gardening supplies for some) whilst the “tail-end-
Charlie” was then able to take over as the lead car.
Travelling on we turned onto the Northern Expressway, which was under construction last time we had come
this way in 2009. We had originally intended to travel on this until Gomersal Road but were concerned about
the limited space available for the right hand turn, so opted for a revision of route through Willaston, Gawler
and thence onto the Barossa Valley Highway. Several people took a break at Lyndoch before continuing to
Bethany Park, chatting with Morris Club members and others who also paused there.
It was most rewarding to receive compliments concerning this run from those who attended, in particular
GVVCVC Journal October 2012 Page 10

mentioning the way we vary our route each year and also our souvenir “participant” plaques (albeit
laminated paper). Remember these are purely for Fremont to Bethany vehicles, although the ground swell
from others is growing!
Minor gripe re-parking, it is unnecessary to shout comments across the oval - we came in at walking pace,
followed directions, and did not park where others might need to park. Perhaps the “participant” plaques
were an indication which group we were and we could have been parked together, as we had expected.
Never the less we all fitted in with room to spare.
Many thanks to those who provided photos for this report, Ed
Gawler Swap Meet Sunday September 23rd
Your scribe was up bright and early (but not as early as many
other volunteers) to the sound of 50kph winds and rain. “Not a
good day for a swap meet!”. Fired up the trusty Peugeot and
on the way. The rain got heavier around Mallala and then
petered out around Reeves Plains where the road was quite
dry. Arrived at the Gawler rec centre to find no wind and no
rain, and things happenning in a very orderly manner, apart
from the two gate attendants who demanded a $55 entry fee
from the Press.
The day remained perfect for a swap meet, light breezes and
plenty of sunshine, and a very good variety of goods on offer.
It was good to see a balance between the good old stuff and
the Ford/ Holden/ Chrysler gear which has tended to take over
recent swap meets. Unfortunately I was unable to find much British stuff for my Jowett and Rover, so went
home empty handed.
It was great to see and hear Bob Perry back in the announcers booth and the keenness of the club volunteers
who manned the gates, organised the sellers, and did the myriad other jobs that are required at a swap meet.
Attendance of both sellers and buyers was comparable with last year, and possibly could have been better if
others were put of by the inclement weather that your scribe experienced, and the number of indoor sites
were dissapointing, although the goods on display was impressive. The car display area was also sparsely
populated with display cars and moderns intermixed.
Having filled the camera, and responded to numerous queries from members and the public, your scribe was
feeling a bit flat, and returned to the Peugeot to find that it was flat also, the lights having been left on for 5
hours. Thanks to the Harvey boys who provided a jump start. Then caught up with Fred at Reeves Plains and
GVVCVC Journal October 2012 Page 11

he ran out of petrol (Did this have something to do with the two extra carbies he
had in the boot which he purchased at the swap meet?). Between Reeves Plains
and Redbanks it started to rain again, and back at Port Parham the wind was still
blowing and it was rather moist. The Gawler Swap Meet was fortunate to have
had a great day.
An Unlikely Tale
Submitted by Bob Kay
As a reader of Astronomy and science magazines,I recently came across the following.
Please note that the detail cannot be verified.
As you have all heard many times the words Al-Qaida and Al-Jazeera and wondered what they mean
The prefix 'Al' simply means ' The' , so, Al-Qaida means 'The Camp' or 'The Group' and Al-Jazeera means
'The voice' or the 'Communicator'.
We have adopted some of the Arabic words into the English language, a good example is the Arabic word
'Al-gebha' which means ' The Method' , we now know this as the English word Algebra.
We have also carried this Prefix into English names, where the prefix now means 'TheSon Of'. For example
Albert means the son of Bert, Allan means the son of Lan and Alvin the son of Vin.
Some research shows that Vin was in fact an assistant to the medieval Knights back in 1492, and in those
days the knights were into Jousting, you know what I mean, the sport where they rode horses and charged at
each other with lances or as they were then called Javelins.
It seems that Vins job was to repair or restore any broken Javelins, and it is said
that there is a photo in existence of Vin standing in front of his workshop under a
sign that says ' Broken Javelins Repaired or Restored
While You Wait' . However I have been unable to verify the existence of this
photo.
Will this one do? Signed Al-vin
Ron Stephens
MY BUCKET LIST
All of my life I have loved cars! In fact I believe I have owned more than 70 from when
I bought my first car when I was 16. It was a black 1938 Ford V8. From 1956 when I
was 18 years old, I began in the Taxi industry so always had to maintain cars to the
desired standard set by the Taxi Board – that was my excuse to fix another vehicle!
Over the years, some of the cars I have owned (and wish I still had some of them!) are:
1926 Essex, 1928 Buick, 1926 whippet, 1927 Dodge, 1940 Ford, 1942 Ford, 1948
Chevrolet, 1953 Ford, 1958 Ford, circa 1960 Simca Aronde, 1969 Fiat 850 sedan, 1970
Fiat 850 sports coupe plus most models of numerous Falcons and Holdens to 1980’s.
As the years passed, I found that I was 1iving pretty well day to day without much purpose as to here I was
heading until I met Barbara in 1998, We found we had a lot of common interests such as our love of the
outback, country music, interstate and overseas travel, 4x4 driving etc, so enjoyed sharing many happy times
which also included belonging to Probus and a walking group and keeping in touch with friends and
relations, In all a very busy and rewarding lifestyle!
However, I discovered that LIFE had some unexpected surprises for me. I have always been aware of having
regular health checks that are recommended by the health system so was rather shocked when, in October
2008 my Urologist suggested that I have a biopsy on my prostrate. It detected that I had cancer in the
prostrate gland and it was outside of the gland which ruled out having an operation. So in November 2008 I
began 6 weeks of hormone therapy to shrink the cancer before I was able to have 37 sessions of radiotherapy
– five days a week for just over 7 weeks, finishing at the end of February 2009. It was all very tiring but
necessary and as the days passed, I did a lot of soul searching and thinking. I came to the conclusion that I
was so much luckier than some men in similar circumstances, to have been given the chance to do something
about the problem before the cancer spread to other organs of my body. I also realized how thin and precious
that thread of life is.
I decided to make a Bucket 1ist of things I would like to do before my time on earth was up! (Some people
may relate to film of that name.)
One wish high on my agenda was to work on old engines to help restore and keep them going. I have
wonderful memories of when I used to visit my Grandparents at Kimba during school holidays all those
years ago. I was allowed to help when there were problems with tractor and other machinery engines so I
learned a lot and enjoyed the success of hearing them fire up So I joined the Gawler Machinery Restorers
Club which meets at the Roseworthy Campus each Wednesday to maintain, mend and repair old farm
machinery that belong to the Museum there. We chaps have a great camaraderie and feel pretty chuffed when
we hear an old engine come to life, sometimes after many hours of working on it.
Another top of the list wish was to own an old car again. I didn’t mind which make or model so long as it
was driven by an engine without a computer!
At the beginning of March 2009, I was lucky to find for sale at Macclesfield, a 1962 Wolseley 15/60. I fell in
love at first sight!!! It was shiny black with red upholstery and I thought it looked really grand. A trailer load
of spare parts went with the car, but luckily 1 never had to use any of them.
So Barbara and 1 joined the Gawler Veteran, Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club and have really enjoyed
every outing we have been on. The club is well run with monthly meetings and journals to keep us up to date
with past and up-coming events. The members are friendly and the runs we have attended are always
interesting and well organised by different members. We go on as many as possible through the week and on
weekends and have had great times on three interstate June-long-weekend trips.
I have since sold the Wolseley to a chap who lives in Barmera and I now own a 1975 Jaguar XJ6L. 1 seem to
spend a lot of time under the bonnet or in the boot and trying to get all the switches to work, but that is half
of the fun of owning an old car!
Two of the top priorities on my Bucket List are being realised and enjoyed. I am working my way through
the list (adding some more as I go) and am determined to enjoy every one and every day as it comes!
I consider myself to be a Cancer Survivor and strongly recommend that all men over 50 have an annual PSA
blood test plus the digital examination. My PSA was normal so the cancer would not have been detected
early without the ‘finger’ test and I may not have been here to write this! I feel my life is more interesting
and fulfilling after having to face what might have been!
1952 Allard P1
In the August edition of the Journal I mentioned issues with an Allard in Queensland. Here are some photos
of the car. Allards were built by Sydney Allard who liked to build specials for his own use, but people liked
them so much that they influenced him to build them for sale. Most early Allards were based on British Ford
parts and the P1 uses Ford Pilot motors and transmissions including the rear axle with the longitudinal
springs typical of Ford design but with a Panhard rod to improve handling. Unfortunately Allard used his
own design for the front end with swing axles with coil springs. The swing axles rotate from the centre line
of the car and a s a result the camber changes significantly with every bump, which makes driving an Allard
interesting! Obviously Sydney Allard mastered this idiosyncrasy, as he drove a P1 to out right victory in the
1952 Monte Carlo Rally (Stirling Moss was second in a Sunbeam Talbot 90)
Later Allards used Chrysler and Cadillac V8s as motive power and Sydney was always experimenting with
different types of racing vehicles. He is considered to be the father of British Drag Racing. He once
developed a rather weird vehicle for hill climbs: a twin-engined Steyr four-wheel-drive prototype, of great
complexity. “All this leads to 9 litres of motor car and a very brave Sydney Allard surrounded by chains,
shafts and engines” The car featured a solidly-mounted rear axle to which he planned to mount Americantype
dragster slick tyres. This was an early indication of the influence of American drag racing on his
designs. The car was never successfully run and soon abandoned.
