Look how far we’ve come!
Transformational Journey, other initiatives have changed much – for the better – in a short pperiod
Community has undergone some of the most signifi cant changes ever
seen in this 102-year-old organization.
Many of the projects at least partially have come under the heading of
the “Transformational Journey” at Cross Keys, and the resulting changes
truly have transformed much:
Wellness – There was a wellness program fi ve years ago, but it was
small. Today it involves a signifi cant percentage of villagers and residents
of Assisted Living and the Healthcare Center. Team members also are
taking part, and for the fi rst time in 2010 they even earn a rebate on their
health insurance premiums for participating.
The Wellness Program has taken on a new dimension with classes and activities in the Harvey S. Kline
Wellness Center’s pool.
The neighborhood dining areas in the Healthcare Center make meals a pleasant, sociable time for residents.
ness program was built while ile
there still were no facilities to match the interest, so when the Harvey
S. Kline Wellness Center opened late last spring, it had an immediate
audience. That facility now crowns a wellness effort that has garnered
national attention.
Neighborhoods and Dining – The ongoing Transformational
Journey process has focused on the human element in all we do,
especially in the Healthcare Center, where making the environment less
institutional/medical was seen as a key to empowering team members,
residents and families to work together toward a greater quality of life.
Five years ago we had “units”; now there are “neighborhoods” with
Neighborhood Coordinators leading integrated teams working together.
A seasonal look back . . .
and forward
I am reminded at the beginning of a new year and
decade of the role seasons play in our personnel lives
and the life of Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community. Season changes
provide an opportunity to review our recent history and plan for the future. Please join
me in celebrating last year.
This past year we completed the Harvey S. Kline Wellness Center, an addition to the
community center and 56 new apartments in Harmony Ridge. While the buildings are
wonderful, the real impact of these physical additions is their impact on the social and
spiritual fabric of the community.
The impact of bringing together villagers, health care and assisted living residents,
team members and community people has exceeded anything I could have imagined.
Villagers have stepped forward to provide leadership in so many ways that I can’t keep
up with everything that is going on. The creativity, enthusiasm and participation exceed
anything team members could provide.
Team sports (sometimes quite competitive), groups organizing to volunteer their time
and skills, interest groups that function like clubs, social events and Bible study groups
are also part of the new fabric of community life.
In our Assisted Living community we are now three (or four) smaller communities
or neighborhoods. We all know that we function better in a group of less than 100,
so neighborhoods of 30 are more manageable. The new renovations make this
arrangement possible.
In health care we continue to work at focusing on the wishes and needs of those
we serve, and we made a big improvement by adding country kitchens on each
neighborhood. Residents now have choices and can tell servers when and how
much they want to eat. Integrating dining service, community life, caregivers and
housekeepers to work as a team on each neighborhood gives each resident the attention
needed to thrive.
In 2010 we expect to have more and better physicians’ services on campus with our
new arrangement with the Hanover Hospital Clinic and the Hillside Clinic. We
anticipate improved and expanded home services for villagers who prefer to stay in
their apartment or cottage but need some assistance. We are in the process of updating
our Master Plan, and the Board of Directors continues to work at our Strategic Plan;
both efforts seek to refl ect anticipated market demands among those already living here
and those who may join them.
I invite you to hold those we serve, our team mates and the family and friends of this
community, in your prayers as we – like the prophet Micah – work to do justice, love
mercy and walk humbly with our God.
By Vernon L. King, President/CEO
How are we doing?
We may not mention this as often as we should, but your comments and
suggestions about Crossing Points are always welcomed; in fact, they’re
encouraged. Let us hear from you, by e-mail (f.buhrman@crosskeysvillage.org),
phone (717-624-5203) or letter (P.O. Box 128, New Oxford, PA 17350).
Thanks, as always, for reading.
Karen Sunbury named Director of Nursing
Karen Sunbury of New Oxford, a team member at Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community for nearly
25 years, including 14 years as Education Coordinator, has been named Director of Nursing.
Sunbury’s past responsibilities at Cross Keys, and earlier in her career at Hanover Hospital, have included extensive
“front line” experience as an RN (and a Nursing Assistant while she was in college). For two years she also was
Assistant Health Care Coordinator at Cross Keys, working in all facets of resident care in Assisted Living and
Residential Health.
“I am pleased to have Karen Sunbury taking on this challenging position,” President/CEO Vernon King said of the
appointment. “Under her leadership we will be able to continue the progress of our Transformational Journey of
culture change, and her extensive clinical background will be helpful in strengthening our efforts in that area.
“Karen has a proven track record of working well with others, and her collegial style of leadership is just we need at
this point. We have made an excellent choice.”
“I am so excited to have Karen as our new Director of Nursing,” Health Care Administrator Amanda Chase said.
“During our interviews for the position, Karen showed a sincere dedication to our success, as well as excellent
critical thinking skills.
“I think Karen and I will make a great team. We share some of the same ideas to increase morale and improve our
overall clinical services.”
As Education Coordinator, Sunbury was primary instructor of the Nursing Assistant Program at Cross Keys and
held a variety of other responsibilities in education and quality assurance. She was selected by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education to assist with the development of the 2003 Nurse Aide Curriculum Guidelines.
She has conducted a wide variety of education and training programs at Cross Keys, and she applied for and was
awarded two grants for related educational efforts.
She chairs or serves on committees involved
with quality assurance, professional services,
documentation, electronic medical records, fall
risk, and medication reduction.
A BSN graduate of York College and member
of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society,
Sunbury is married with three adult children.
The Healthcare Center includes 270 long- and
short-term care nursing beds, with specialized
areas for “subacute” rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s/
dementia/memory loss resident, and palliative
care. The majority of the organization’s 700
team members provide direct or indirect care
and support to residents in nursing. Karen Sunbury
Look how far we’ve come!
Continued from Page 1
A key element of the change has been creating neighborhood dining
areas with more personal service and attractive presentation of food
and drink. The “country kitchen” preparation areas that have made
this possible fi nally went into use late last year. Again, the changes have
garnered national attention.
(See Healthcare Administrator Amanda Chase’s assessment of our progress
in these and other areas on Pages 6 and 7.)
Sociable Spaces – Assisted Living, which also has changed its dining
operation, saw the need for common areas that promoted more resident
social interaction and encouraged both spontaneous and planned
activities. During 2008 and 2009, all three fl oors of AL were extensively
remodeled to fulfi ll this objective.
Among other things, the changes have enhanced the Wellness Program
for AL, where regular classes are now held. AL residents also make a
weekly trip to the pool at the Harvey S. Kline Wellness Center.
4
New Apartments – Less program-related than the other changes,
the Harmony Ridge West Apartments nevertheless represent a change,
with 10 new fl oor plans created to broaden the spectrum of apartment
models available at Cross Keys. While the new building added more
high-end apartments, the campus overall continues to offer the widest
range of independent retirement living options – and prices – available
in the area.
With the construction equipment largely absent from the campus for
the fi rst time in several years, it’s easy to view all the recent changes as the
end of a process, but actually, this represents only a breather. Facilities,
programs and the very culture of Cross Keys Village – The Brethren
Home Community will continue to evolve – as they have since 1908 –
anticipating and meeting the needs of those we serve, today and into the
future. (See President/CEO Vernon King’s perspective on this process in his
message on Page 2.)

Health Care review for 2009
I can hardly believe that an entire year has passed since I assumed the position of Health Care Administrator. Although the year went by
quickly, it has been a productive one.
To enhance resident care, we have added direct care Nursing Assistant positions to Somerset’s evening shift as well as Woodbury and
South Mountain’s night shift. The Health Care Center is answering call lights and meeting resident needs 8 percent faster than last year.
Karen Sunbury was deservingly promoted to the Director of Nursing position in November. Our country kitchens have opened on each
neighborhood to provide our residents with an enhanced dining experience.
Our Quality Measures have drastically improved. These rate different clinical measures for nursing home residents and compare them to other
homes in the state with a percentile rank. The lower the percentile, the better your ranking.
Our goal is to have all Quality Measures under the 75th percentile. Falls dropped from the 76th percentile in 2008 to the 61st. The number
of residents who were depressed or anxious has dropped from the 93rd to 77th percentile. The number of residents with little activity has
dropped from the 67th to the 45th percentile. Low risk residents with pressure ulcers dropped from the 94th percentile to 0!
This list goes on with more improvements. Resident concern reports have decreased by 50 percent. These outcomes are a result of multiple
factors including dedicated team members and great teamwork.
I would like to make myself more accessible to the residents and families that I serve. My offi ce is located near the third fl oor elevators from the
main entrance, in the Health Care Administration offi ce (formerly the Nursing Administration Suite). You may also contact me by phone at
717-624-5217. Thank you for your support and for entrusting your loved one to our care.
The Healthcare Center was especially affected by change in 2009, in large part related to the “Transformational Journey.” As
the name indicates, that process is continuous, so this is in no way an end point. In these stories, Health Care Administrator
Amanda Chase refl ects on the changes of last year and some of what is still happening.
Resident Satisfaction Survey in Health Care
The Health Care Center conducts Resident Satisfaction Surveys every two years by utilizing an independent consulting group called Holleran.
Interviews were conducted in August 2009, and 192 skilled nursing residents or their family members answered interview questions by
telephone. Each interview lasted approximately 10 minutes and was conducted by a trained interviewer from Holleran.
Results showed that we scored between excellent and good for the overall satisfaction with the Health Care Center. Over 90 percent of those
interviewed would recommend Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community to a friend or relative.
Top Performing Factors for the Health Care Center included: friendliness of team members; upkeep to the building; appeal of common areas;
safety and security; overall cleanliness; opportunity to engage in a variety of activities; notifi cation about changes in medical condition; quality
of transportation services; effort to maintain an odor-free environment, and quality of spiritual services.
Bottom Performing Factors included: accessibility of physicians; adequacy of new resident orientation; Health Care team member’s
responsiveness to daily needs (toilet assistance, meal assistance, call bells, etc.); quality of therapy services; quality of laundry service; quality of
food/snacks, and accessibility of administration.
To address the results of the bottom performing factors, team members will be working on a plan to improve. As always our philosophy
remains that our community emanates from the spiritual atmosphere and a caring team of team members who respect human life and are
committed to providing quality service.
New Health Care dress code
With a new year there are exciting new updates. I want to make you aware of a change you will see when visiting the Health Care Center.
To continue our Transformational Journey toward creating a home environment for our residents, we are liberalizing the Health Care
dress code. Effective January 1, uniforms are optional for Health Care team members, and they will be able to dress in appropriate casual
attire. We are hoping this change will help to decrease a hospital-like atmosphere that scrub uniforms can create and promote a warm,
social environment.
As always, the safety of our team members and the respect for our customers were the two most important considerations when
implementing this new dress code. We want to convey a positive image to you while providing a residential environment for those we serve.
Apple Butter Festival is growing
On behalf of the Auxiliary, a huge thank-you to all those who helped make the 2009 Apple
Butter Festival such fun. The bake sale was outstanding, as the many church members,
villagers and volunteers contributed to make it so. We could not do such an event without
the Replogle family and the many apple donors for their extra efforts in providing our
apple butter. We had a full day fi lled with hayrides,
games, food, homemade bread and apple butter.
Thank you vendors, demonstrators, decorators,
donors, team members, Auxiliary members and
all helping hands for ensuring our success. We
appreciate you coming and enjoying the day; we
couldn’t have done it without you! This event
raised approximately $2,900 toward the Auxiliary
2009 goals.
Mark your calendars for next year – Saturday,
October 9 – it just keeps getting bigger and better.
All kinds of splashing
in the pool
Drop by the Harvey S. Kline Wellness Center pool, and you may see villagers
and team members taking part in fi tness classes or lap swimming on their
own, but that’s hardly the full extent of activity in the new aquatic facility.
In the afternoon, the New Oxford H.S. Swim Team practices at Cross Keys,
and with several dozen participants, plus coaches and parents, that brings
a lot of activity to Harmony Ridge. Other teams have used the pool for
training, and swimming lessons have been offered to younger children
when the swim team is not practicing.
Water volleyball has become a popular villager activity, and some team
members have joined in as well. When the villagers challenged the Exec
Team (plus some other administrators) to a little competition, “fans” even
showed up to watch.
The current activity level represents only six months experience with the
new aquatic center, so other activities are sure to make a splash in the future.
New Oxford H.S. Swim Team members practice in the pool.
Executive Team members (foreground) respond to the villagers’ water volleyball challenge.
Card Clubs at
Cross Keys Village
The Good Samaritan Bridge Club started contributing to the
Good Samaritan Fund in 1997. Bettie Norris reported that
newcomers are always welcome. This year the club offered a
beginners and refresher training classes.
Tables of four meet each month in their homes, then once a year
they get together in August for lunch followed by an afternoon
of playing 20 hands of Bridge. For more information contact
Dorothy Snead at 77-624-5415. Monthly contributions are given
to the Good Samaritan Fund.
Don and Lovie Klunk started the Hand & Foot Club in April
2008 after enjoying playing cards with friends during their
annual six months living in Florida. With great reception, a group
of villagers started meeting to play Hand & Foot every other
Tuesday evening in Harmony Ridge. After surveying the players
about playing the opposite Tuesday evening, it was decided
to play “500” on those nights. All village residents, including
beginners, are invited to participate, starting at 6:30 p.m.
When the Klunks were scheduled to leave for Florida, they asked
for volunteers to manage the games during their absence, so the
club has continued year-round. Shirley Tracy volunteered to run
the Hand & Foot, games and Louise Lawrence volunteered to
run the “500” club.
Don Klunk decided to survey the players about donating (on
a volunteer basis) $1 per week. The request was to split the
contribution between BHEAP (an education scholarship fund
for employees) and the Good Samaritan Fund. The majority
ruled to go ahead as proposed. As of October 1, 2009, the two
Tuesday evening groups have donated $413.50 to these funds.
Community mourns passing of Ruth Kline
Ruth Kline, a member of the
Cross Keys family for four
decades, died January 11 in the
Health Care Center at age 86.
Ruth’s husband of 66
years, Harvey S. Kline, was
administrator and then president
of what was then the Brethren
Home from 1971-89 (he was
a member of the Board of
Directors from 1967-71). While
he was president, the couple
moved into a cottage on campus,
where they continued to live.
Despite health problems that forced her to move into the
Health Care Center, Ruth joined Harvey in all the ceremonial
activities surrounding the planning, building and opening of
the Harvey S. Kline Wellness Center, and after the opening, she
was able to use the pool there.
Linda Propst
Linda Propst, a Brethren
Volunteer Service assignee
from Mt. Sidney Va., joined
the Cross Keys community
in November and is
expected to be on campus
for at least six months.
She will be working
with Campus Dining on
Woodbury Neighborhood
and will assist Community
Life Leaders with the social
activities there.
“My family visited shortly after my arrival and was
amazed at the size of the campus,” she said. “I have had a
wide range of opportunities to explore.”
Born Ruth Zimmerman in Martinsburg, Pa., Ruth was the
mother of a daughter and two sons, seven grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
When a thunderstorm forced activities indoors, Ruth and Harvey S. Kline
completed the ribbon-cutting for the Harvey S. Kline Wellness Center at the
edge of the long-anticipated pool.

A “White Christmas” with lots of warmth inside
With a foot-and-a-half of snow blanketing the area the week before Christmas, Bing Crosby’s musical holiday favorite was much more
than a dream this year – the Nativity Scene animals outside the Health Care Center were barely visible on Christmas Eve. Indoors,
though, everything possible was done to create a warm holiday feeling for residents, families and team members. Community Life’s
Petah Sipling, shown here with villager Jean Anderson, even dressed up as one of Santa’s elves to generate some smiles.
